Selling Cleland and Bollan (particularly Cleland) to Rangers later that season was a big blow.

Wee Eck was a solid player at RB.

Christian Dailly was a fantastic talent.

Yes, he played in the relegation side and struggled alongside Pressley as a CH pairing at times in the 1st Division but the boy played pretty much EVERY position for Utd apart from Keeper by the age of what? 19?

His absolute versatility was both his strength and weakness, as in, he was such a good player that his Manager's felt nothing of putting him at any position up against players who were older etc. Sometimes he got found out (defensively) in those early days.

Still remember his debut as a Striker at 16. Two goals in Perth was it?

How that team got relegated, is something I have often wondered, and never quite worked out. We had far worse teams over the next ten years which survived relegation battles.

From memory,  O'Hanlon was shite, some of our best players like McKinlay and Brewster were out of form, and we conceded too many goals from set pieces.

Re: Classic Utd Match #9 - Dundee Utd 5 Hearts 2

For me, we were relegated because Ivan Golac, a great character, was a very poor manager.

And the talented looking squad we had then would do very well in the top league today, because the standard overall in Scottish football has dropped so badly. Nonetheless, some of the players we had, such as Ristić, and especially the goalkeepers, were not up to requirements of the then SPL. O'Hanlon replaced Alan Main, who we also shipped out half way through the season, as was van de Kamp at around the same time. Fancy keeping O'Hanlon and punting two keepers who were on a different level completely!

Then there was, as Tek says, the loss of Bollan and Cleland, the first because of a fall out with wee Jim, I think. They went at the same time as the two keepers.

I think, even when we were in poor form as late as February, most fans thought we'd stay up anyway at Thistle's expense. But in their last 12 games, they only had one defeat, to us at Firhill: I mind United fans doing a mini pitch invasion at that game too. Then we thought it would be the Dons to go down, they were 4 points behind us with three games to go, but won all these games, including against us.

To go back to Ivan Golac, he almost took us down in the cup winning season too, only an unlikely win against a very good Motherwell side kept us up.
