Absolutely brilliant interview with Lambo here by Si Ferry.
I remember reading in the press that Jim McLean was close to signing Lambert from St.Mirren. but i never realised just how close we were to signing him.
Basically he had a bad feeling in his gut about signing for Utd as he was waiting to get in the reception area to meet wee Jim and no one answered the door till he'd buzzed a few times. FFS imagine we had just welcomed him inside to the stadium on arrival 😒

He was a great player.
Am I right in thinking that, despite his heroics in Germany, he wasn't capped until he signed for Celtic?
Craig Brown is on record as saying that, had Lambert played the Euro 2000 play-off games against England, that we would have progressed. I couldn't agree more.
Deluded Rangers fans will say that SpongeBaz SquarePass was better, that he was motm in Wembley. As good as he was in London, they seem to overlook how pish he was in the first leg. His direct opponent that afternoon was Scholes, who scored both goals.
Anyway, rant over.
Would have loved to have seen Lambert at Tannadice.
Nah, TB. He was first capped at Motherwell.

Just as a horrid side note, Paul Hartley was close to signing for Utd too. Saw him in an office in Tannadice.

Was that around 2000? I mind being at a game at Easter Road where the game had been stopped, and Hartley was holding the ball on the stand side waiting to take a throw in. This was before the ground was developed.
Anyway, Hartley started speaking to us, in the enclosure, telling us he 'almost' signed for 'you boys' during the week.
If he had, he maybe wouldn't have helped us stay up at Muirton a couple of seasons on......
Online!
I always thought the story was he was on trial and jim didnae fancy him

Yeah i was at that game. Utd fans were in the old Main Stand that day as Easter Road was getting redeveloped.
Hartley of course scored the only goal of the match and gave Utd fans the old 'GIRUY' gesture or similiar. Which was uncalled for tbh as he hadn't really received any abuse on the day from a very deflated Utd support.
But summed him up. He was always a bit of a wee prick.
