'Legend' status

Are there any players who have played for United who would be considered 'legends' that haven't won a major trophy?

I'm of the opinion that you can only be a legend at a football club if you win a major trophy. Anything other than that it comes under the 'cult hero', 'fan favorite' bracket.

Thoughts?

Re: 'Legend' status

Utd have only won 5 trophies in 110 years.

So i would consider guys like Peter McKay, Doug Smith, Ian Mitchell, Dennis Gillespie, Duncan Hutchison etc all to be Utd Legends despite not having won a major honour with the club.

Re: 'Legend' status

Best players in my time to never win a trophy off the top of my head, Badger, Gallacher, Iain Ferguson, big Dunc, Redford, Billy T, Kjell, Gauld, Krivokapic.  I’d say some of them are club legends, just maybe not at the same level as the trophy winners.

Also as above there’s definitely some of the older players who would be considered as legends.

Re: 'Legend' status

'Legend', how ever much overused is more defined by many years of quality play rather than by winning the League Cup with 29 Utd appearances. A player I think would have to have played a minimum of 300 games before qualifying for legendary status. So there are not going to many around these days.
