Peter Bonetti

Former Utd Goalkeeper and England Internationalist has passed away today after a long illness.

Sad news.

Re: Peter Bonetti

Sad news indeed. At his peak one of the world's best, and was kept from gaining more international caps by Gordon Banks, then Peter Shilton in the later part of his career. One game against West Germany probably limited his caps as well, when as a replacement for Banks he conceded three after England had led 2-0 (much to my delight at the time)

He did, after a long campaign, get awarded with a World Cup Winners medal, which would be a quiz question for United fans over the last few years.

He came out of goalkeeping retirement and played seven games for us, but it was clear he was past his best, and wee Jim had to make up with Hamish to cover his error in signing the Englishman. Bonetti had come to Scotland to work as a postman on Mull, following hanging up the gloves at Stamford Bridge.

RIP, "The Cat".
