Heard this phrase bandied about for many years amongst our support.
Just wondered if the posters on here agreed DUFC are a World wide brand and if we can hear from any circumstances you have been recognised as a supporter of Dundee Utd.
Me, personally I am not that far travelled as an individual, compared to others on here.
But there are a few instances my support of Utd has been acknowledged by others abroad.
My very first was 30 years ago (1989) I (and my family) were visiting my Auntie who had recently moved to Florida with her American Husband. Me and my family went to an Ice Cream parlour place in a mall in Pensicola. I had a Utd top on. Guy serving the ice cream says something along the lines of (to my Mum) 'Are you from Dundee?'
Long and short of it was he was a Dundonian living there who supported Utd.
Another instance I was in a wee football shop in Amsterdam with my Mrs. We were on a wee break. The store was wall to wall Holland memorabilia. Anyway I get to buying a few items for my Son. The guy at the till says something along the lines of 'You guys really like the Dutch football team', or words to that extent.
My Missus replies with 'Oh well he (me) and my Son really like the colours because it's the same colours of their team'.
Dutch guy - 'Where are you both from'?
Mrs Tek - 'Scotland'
Dutch guy - ' Ahhhh Dundee United, yes?;
What is the most far flung location someone has recogniced you as a Utd fan?

Probably Australia but like yourself it was an expat. A while back some might’ve heard of United a wee bit as Nakamura was with Celtic and you would occasionally get a minute of highlights if not just him scoring or assisting but other than that nothing. Japanese will follow the big European teams or Japanese playing abroad but not much else. They’ve binned the Monday night highlights from abroad now so anyone outside of the big leagues is unknown. That DAZN channel is only 1800¥ a month for every EPL game, plus most of the Spanish games too so that’s the biggest here. There is a wee pub here with a United away strip hanging up mind you.

I have a feeling I might win this one
In my opinion, no I don't think we, or any part of Scottish Football are world famous. In the bigger parts of the world (Russia, China, India, USA, South America) there is very limited knowledge of Scottish Football.
In countries with a tradition of migration from Scotland, there is a very small minority of hardcore football fans who know about United, and have a surprisingly good knowledge. The P4W4 against Barcelona and Martin Lewis calling Tannadice "Tannadiche" are the most common memories.
Furthest flung place I have been recognized would be a stunning beach called Hahei on the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand, where I went for a run wearing a United top, and a guy who was fishing yelled "MON THE JAMBOS" with a big smile on his face.

Martin Tyler btw
There was a time I'd say we were world famous . The 1980's , definitely. Present day, no chance.

Forfar..................... guy said to me 'is that a United strip'?
I said 'no it's a United shirt'.
He then told me to 'fuck off ya pedantic dick'

Definitely wasn't Martin Tyler. It was on the lunchtime news. Pretty sure it was Martyn Lewis.
Was in Naples a few weeks ago and the guy who we were renting the apartment from mentioned Dundee United right away when we said where we were from.
Have found this recognition many times over the years when I've been abroad so yeah I reckon we're well kent.

Not as elaborate as some of them, and certainly closer to home, but probably slightly bizarre, and even a bit comical.
A few year ago. In a Cable Car ascending a mountain near Bergen in Norway. Wearing United jacket. Local geezer says to me, "ah Dundee United. You're not doing so well just now". I says back to him. Neither are you. You got relegated last Season (Brann Bergen). (strangely enough, the same fate awaited us soon after.)
In Torshavn, capital of the Faroe Islands. In a cafe bar with my wife, wearing a United top. Lassie serving at the bar goes "Barcelona". I say what?. She says "Barcelona, you beat Barcelona". I says Yeah that's right. She was a no bad bit stuff TBH, so me trying to be the big man, when making our order for food etc. told her to get herself a drink. Wife went mental when paying the bill and it had cost me 9 quid for being a smart @rse.

I'm getting mixed up. Martin Tyler said "Barcelona are finding out now about the Tannadice roar" just as the cross come shot from Kevin Gallagher hit the back of the net and the shed had a massive sway.
That night was some night and certainly put us on the world stage.

Plenty of recognition around the world, but famous, no.

I thought there would have been a wee YouTube clip of the Tannadeechee moment but couldn't find a thing, I remember he was on a later bulletin where the item was repeated and he finished with "of course, tonight's match is at TannaDICE"
As for being World Famous, I seem to remember it starting on Utd Mad as a tongue in cheek brag about beating Barcelona. It was also a dig at the neighbours.

Katy Perry loved my United tattoo

I was in the Golden Nugget casino in Las Vegas a few years ago and the croupier, after hearing we were from Scotland, said "Have any of you guys heard of a team called Dundee United?".
Turns out he was in the Roma squad that played us in 1984. He was quick to point out that he never played in either of the games.
The 'world famous' accolade would have been jokingly applied in the wake of beating Barcelona home & away in 1987 having beaten them home & away in 1966. As per other posts it's really down to P4 W4 v Barcelona.
How 'heard of' round the world we are is different & varies but I guess we are between the 3rd & 6th best known Scottish teams round the globe.

Still worthy of a bang in the pus though...
