Seriously, how do we rectify this? It's getting beyond parody now.
Simply practice them more? Or is there a wee bit more to it than all that?
Was reading earlier on that Harry Kane practises up to 50 penalty kicks per training session. It's little wonder he is so accurate from 12 yards out.

For me penalties are all about confidence and not really anything else. Obviously you need the technique to hit the target, but you’d presume professional should have that already. It looked like some of our guys were thinking about it far too much.

If it’s good enough for Harry Kane................

That's a very interesting article Kiwi. Seems like Southgate was meticulous in his preperation for the event of a penalty shoot-out arising.
It's not 'a lottery' as some football people often claim. Infact i hate that term. It's lazy and generic. A throwaway soundbite.
Yes, you need confidence as The Shdd stated above.
But one sure fire way of becoming confident with them is to practice them to death until you have real belief in your ability to place the ball in the part of the net you want to.
Would be a good question to ask Lee McCulloch at a Q+A 'how often do we practice penalties'?
And do we try and recreate them under match pressure i.e. taking them at the end of a days training when legs are tired or having the players stand behind the goal and try and harangue and put off the player who's about to take one. Etc etc.

I would ask the same question of the goalkeeper coach, how often do we practice penalties and what do we practice?
I expect every goalkeeper to try and control the situation for a penalty, your positioning before the kick, how the ball is passed to the kicker (e.g. Sieb giving the ball to Andy Walker before a penalty and clearly saying something to him that got in his head), and even if the ball is on the spot properly. Then, how do you read their body language in the run up and make the save. Basic things like most players kick the ball to the opposite side their standing foot points, I was taught that at junior football level.
I agree, calling it a lottery is a lazy excuse.

I find that utterly ridiculous to be honest.

That was my initial reaction too.
Be interesting, nonetheless, to see if they have scored more goals from throw in situations since they brought this guy in.
I mind a boy years ago for Stoke (i think?), who's long throw in's led to many goals for them

It’s not. It’s the cutting edge of sport where every detail is crucial.

this is daft. Unless he's coaching beyond the throw itself such as all the positioning around it and what you do at the breakdowns. How do you apply pressure on opposing throw-ins in different parts of the pitch.
If not, total shit.

Anybody remember when managers knew how to do this themselves? Fuck me it’s throw ins, make space and look for the ball. When defending make sure everyone’s picked up, including a man for the thrower and there’s a spare body to sweep. It’s not difficult, even at the very top level.

Sorry to keep banging on about this.
But noticed on Twitter that Utd's SPL/F record in penalty shoot-out's is.
P - 23
W -9
L - 14
A lot of those shoot-out wins must have came early doors.
Last one was against Arbroath away in our first competitive fixture since we got relegated. Back in Friday 15/7/16. More than 3 fucking years ago.
Think i'm right in that? Anyone say different?
Must have lost bout 4/5 since then
And the penalty shoot-out that preceeded that Arbroath one must have been losing to Hibs at Hampden in SCSF 16. And this after Cummings fucked up a panenka pen during the match.
Bottomline is this. Any Utd folk looking in...can we practise these to fucking death, please. Our next one won't be till January 2020 at the earliest.
Time on our hands to make us very fucking good at these pressure situations.
from memory, we beat ICT up there in the Betfred as well as Dundee at Dens.
No dispute that our recent record is shite...

I remember the ICT one. It was Nick Van Der Velden’s debut and I couldn’t see why everyone thought he’d be some sort of baller. I was unfortunately proved correct. Stewart Murdoch also played centre mid and scored a cracker too.
