Re: United vs St.Mirren - Tuesday 3rd March (7.45PM)

It was a poor game no doubt about that.
We tried to pass the ball and it did work sometimes particularly the first 30mins.
But St Mirren ffs I'm not sure if I've seen a more long/ hoofball performance from an away team at Tannadice.  They are in trouble.
Overall it was a night where the result was the main thing and IMO the better team won

I think that was Big Andy the Dundee Stars announcer on the mic tonight.
That will please many if its a permanent thing

Re: United vs St.Mirren - Tuesday 3rd March (7.45PM)

Agree 100%. Some good moments tonight but also some head scratchers and bizarre ones too. Farugia's touch when basically through going about 6 yards away from him, not once but twice being the main one.

Too much commotion

Re: United vs St.Mirren - Tuesday 3rd March (7.45PM)

Actually agree wi the couple posts above. Thought first 25 minutes we were doing well, if Farrugia could control a ball we could definitely have had a few opportunities to go 2 or 3 up during this spell but his touch was dreadful tonight. I was at least fairly happy to see he was getting in the right positions.

St Mirren still a big physical side but appear to have lost that pace up front that makes them the threat they were going forward the last few seasons, I thought they were absolutely horrendous and probably lucky that Livi are as bad as they are.

Graham done very well in a very physical battle with their centre forward, and I actually thought Watters didn't do much wrong in the first half, won a few flick ons, chased a few lost causes successfully. Camara should've played him in at one point in the first half where he'd actually won the ball, held it up long enough to get Camara involved.

Russell looks like exactly what we all expected, an aging player but one with plenty experience to make up for it. Offered a few decent bits of link up with Sapsford, a few nice touches here and there. Think boys like Sapsford, Stirton can both learn a lot from him on the training ground.

Lets be honest they were shite but still a big 3 points and also important to get the win before fridays season defining game.

Re: United vs St.Mirren - Tuesday 3rd March (7.45PM)

The only thing that was important tonight was winning. So, to that end, job done.

I thought the players to their credit did try and pass the ball, but that pitch is just destroying any chance of a good game of football breaking out. Gonna be like that till the pitch gets a bit more grass back on it but that could be a month away. Thankfully, we don't have another home game for a spell now.

I questioned if Goodwin could turn things around at the weekend. That win tonight gives buys him a much needed bit of goodwill back amongst the supporters. If we can win on Friday then the rest of the season all of a sudden seems exciting again and we have hope. Lose though and the season is effectively over in early March and the criticism that would follow would undoubtedly lead to more questions regarding his future at the club.

Friday night really is a massive one for the club, the supporters and for Jim Goodwin himself.

My player ratings -

AMB 6 - Didn't have anything to do really. Had no chance at their goal, which was a good strike.

Stephenson 6 - Still a pale imitation of himself for me.

Iovu 7 - Big Iurie had a decent game tonight. Actually think he's gonna be a big miss on Friday.

Graham 7 - Solid performance. Unlucky not to score with his 2nd half header.

Keresztes 6 - He was 'ok', nothing more. Seems to be getting involved in too much nonsense though. Every week now he's on the ground claiming he's been pushed etc etc. Just get on with it.

Farrugia 5 - I don't want to be too critical, but his touch at times was really appalling, but how much of that was down to the pitch, who knows. I will give him credit for not hiding, but he needs to start offering much more or it will be a very short stay at Tannadice, i suspect.

Agyei 8 - My MotM. Puts himself about and always looks for the ball. My type of player. Tries to influence the game and not just be a bystander in it. Not sure how long he's contracted for, but looking like a good signing, though it's still early days. I like the fact he looks to shoot so much. He'll score a raker at some point.

Sevelj 7 - Solid display.

Camara 5 - Very poor by his standards. I am wondering how much ramadan is effecting him because that's a couple of games in a row he's looked well off it.

Fatah 6 - See above. At least stuck the ball in the back of the net before exiting for the evening, but he was again out of sorts. That said, he showed bravery to step up and take the penalty after missing against Killie recently.

Watters 5 - Game passed him by again.

Subs -

Trapanovski 6 - Looked pretty lively when he came on. Gonna need him to take a game on Friday.

Sapsford 6 - Looked a little more lively after Johnny Russell came on. Hoping his experience can influence him and get him back to something approaching his best.

Ferry 6 - Couple of timely blocks and clearances near the end.

Russell 6 - Thought he was destined to score that free-kick near the end. Disappointing it hit the wall, but other than that i thought he looked like he fitted into the team perfectly and his fitness looked not bad at all for a 35 year old who hadn't played for months. Fascinating to see how this works out and how he will link up with players like Sapsford, Fatah, Trapanovski, Watters, Dolcek and possibly even Stirton. Very, very strange and surreal seeing him playing with these modern day United players. His signing has undoubtedly given the club and the supporters a massive boost at the right time.

That was a much needed win. We weren’t that good but St Mirren were awful. Agyei looks a good player. Thought Ross Graham & Vicko played well. I was a little nervy when fatah stepped up but well done to the kid.

12pts clear if 11th, should be safe now. Welcome back Johnny!

Delighted with the win, no matter the manner in which we got it. Never dominated. Thought we were decent before our goal but as soon as it goes in, we revert back to giving them plenty possession.

Good to see Stephenson pushing the defence up the pitch in the last few minutes (sevelj maybe did too). Rather than finishing the game with them on top of us, we pushed it up the park.

Mention for fatah - wasnt his best night but has been one of our more consistent players this season but how often does he get fouled with the opponents hardly ever getting carded, yet he gets a ton of yellows...

Aggy looked good doing the simple stuff which is all you need. I still gave the fear he could lose the plot and get sent off. Will need to wait and see i guess.

I wonder if Goodwin asks players to do too much. Examples - watters, a penalty box striker, has to go deep to pick up the ball or gets swapped around the front 3 which doesnt suit him, we have wingers being asked to defend (dolcek being the most notable who it doesnt suit) and centre backs covering wing backs and attacking with the ball at their feet . Maybe the dundee united budget doesnt allow players to play everywhere and we should stick to a more simple  systems where players just play their position

If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

Re: United vs St.Mirren - Tuesday 3rd March (7.45PM)

We were on fire the 1st 10 mins, and then the gehm went inta a kinda lull. It was like waachin twa different gehms.

Every coarner they got, we had abody back in the box, nae chunt up the park, so when we cleared the ba, it went right back a Midden defender, and back they come. WTF.

There was 3 times in the 1st half when both Vicko and Watters were running we the ba doon the right wing and never put the ba inta the box.

But the gehm cheenged big time when Ferry came on.

Chuft for Fatah nailing that Penalty. That'll be a weight aff his shidders.

Canna believe the pace that Russell still has, but puzzled that Sapsford still doesna seem to be back to his sprightly self.

The Midden were mince. Their cheatin moaning b@stards, and that McDermid is a divot haed for falling for their shite.

That is a huge 3 points.

Also good to see the game out without losing a late goal.

Re: United vs St.Mirren - Tuesday 3rd March (7.45PM)

Don’t think we will get as lucky as that again this or any other season.

Their o.g. Is Terry butcher level. Penalty is very unlucky even if it is a pen. They hit the bar at 1-1 and missed a sitter in the first half. Very worrying we can’t score from open play against a team so low in confidence and plying so poorly.

All in all a vital win and should see us safe from relegation. Just can’t see Killy gaining 13 points on us in 9 games.

I think you watched a different game. In what world is that penalty in question? We had Sevelj sent off and a penalty given for a lot less against Hibs earlier in the season. An own goal is an own goal and still counts as a goal last time I looked, regardless of whatever Terry Butcher might have done. We've been unlucky, had shite decisions, punched the ball into our own net several times, been fucked by VAR etc etc all season. We deserved that win last night and whilst still unhappy about a lot of things I'm still gonna say what I see.

I think we all watch a different game and live in a different reality to you to be fair. For ever making stuff up and digging at other posters opinions on here and on other forums as well. My words “even if it is a pen”.  So looks like we agree it was a penalty. I don’t remember that happen before in 40 years watching football. A guy claiming for offside and the ball hitting his hand after a deflection.

Re: United vs St.Mirren - Tuesday 3rd March (7.45PM)

You'll never stop defenders throwing their arms up to claim offside or claiming for corners/throw ins they know fine aren't theirs, but offside is factual, all goals are reviewed, so if we score from that move and we were off (we weren't) then it gets looked at and chopped off.

Stupid hammer throwing arsehole.

About time we got a break. At least you could see the handball and they didn't use guesswork like on Saturday or the Sam Dalby goal.

Making stuff up? You've got me there. Fair enough I misinterpreted your words regarding the penalty, but he's waving his arm around in the penalty area and the ball hits his hand, serves him fucking right. Doesn't really matter why he did it, the balls in play and there's officials there to determine whether it's offside or not,his job was to defend his box. So I refute that it was lucky based on St Mirren being a bunch of cheating bastards who pull out every trick in the book to con the ref,it backfired seriously for them there, fuck em.

I live in the same reality as everyone else, it's a message board where there's no point us all agreeing or we might as well pack it in.

Edit to add that I'm totally aware that I'm fickle as fuck and I reserve my right as a football fan to remain so 😋

Re: United vs St.Mirren - Tuesday 3rd March (7.45PM)

I thought Ferrugia, Watters and Camara were well worth replacing.  One thing, players who like to play things on the ground cannot perform like normal given the pitch conditions.  So would give Camara a pass card for that, not sure about the other two though.  Other than running around like a headless chicken, Watters not offering much currently.

Re: United vs St.Mirren - Tuesday 3rd March (7.45PM)

Ferrugia had a couple of instances where his touch or decision making let him down, but I feel it's only fair to highlight what I thought where some positives

They're very different styles, but he was more disciplined in holding position and shape than Ferry so there was more balance I though to our play, rather than relying on Ferry who's often bombing back because he's left a gap that no-one covers.

He also made some good runs, and took up good positions, again though his touch let him down.

Would have no fear in him playing there, then Ferry coming on against tired legs, but Ferry needs a target to hit in the middle.

We had 11 players in our box at their goal last night, now I think the boy sclaffs his cross and there's a bit of fortune in how it ends up at the boys feet but..

The taker and their keeper aren't in our box so we have a 2 man advantage.

Why not put 3 up to the half way line? They'll keep 3 or maybe 4 back to mark them, meaning it's gonna have to be a hell of a pick out and the box is far less crowded.

Re: United vs St.Mirren - Tuesday 3rd March (7.45PM)

On Farrugia, yes his touch looked poor, but I think it’s unfair to judge anyone’s touch or passing ability on that tattie field of a pitch. His corners were very dangerous, a massive improvement on Fatah’s, who rarely, if ever beat the first man.

Agyei looks a real find. Finally a midfield destroyer, which he haven’t had since Butcher left. I hope having him maybe makes Goodwin decide we don’t always need 3 centre halves.
