UEFA Conference League 🇪🇺

Thought this deserved it's own thread.

So, now we know exactly what tournament we will enter and at what stage.

We will enter the UEFA Conference League in the 2nd Qualifying Round. Ties on Thursday 24th July and Thursday 31st July.

There is a 3rd Qualifying Round and then a subsequent Play-Off two legged match. So, we would need to win three European ties to make it to the financially lucrative Group Stage. Considering we haven't won a Euro tie since the 90's, it's a big ask, but you never know.

Today's match cost us a place in the Europa League 2nd Qualifier and the cushion of parachuting into the 3rd Conference League Qualifier, so a bit of a pisser, but if we can just win the tie we are back to square two (so to speak).

The impact on today for United is the minimum United can make from Europe is down from €900k to €525k - so difference of €375k (£315k) but if we win our first Conference League tie (which we'll be seeded for) the minimum is back to €900K (info courtesy of DUFC Stats on X).

Potential opponents below.

Thanks for the info.  I came on here looking for this info, but wasn't expecting anything like his level of detail

Re: UEFA Conference League 🇪🇺

Pisser but not total pisser.
If you'd offered 4th,which of course is bigger money than 5th and Euro football at startof year I'd have bitten your arm off up to the shoulder.

Re: UEFA Conference League 🇪🇺

Philosophical about missing out on Europa. It might in a way even do us a favour.

We might have got a right good club and got a tanking like the Alkmaar match.

This way we might get easier team, win the tie and then be at the point we would have been at anyway.

I don't want confidence wrecked early in the season like it was after Alkmaar. We never recovered that season.

I think your probably right.
Looking at the list of teams in the Europa league qualifiers there is nothing to be gained by playing teams who will probably give us a doing.
A major dent to the confidence of what will be almost an entirely new team is something we could do without.

Hoping for St Joseph's from Gibraltar or Fiorita from San Marino. Be great away days.

Re: UEFA Conference League 🇪🇺

I may be wrong, but is our somewhat regionalised?

Think it boils down to around 12 possible opponents. 6 of which are Wales & Ireland.

Pretty sure it doesn't get regionalised but but does get divided into several groups of equal seeded and non seeded teams

I usually follow this page, the guys seems really in the know.

https://kassiesa.net/uefa/seedco2025.html

He suggests there isn't a formal regionalisation of the early rounds, but none the less there is an unofficial north/central/south split. (Although you would think west/central/east makes more sense).

If you look at last year's round 2, you can definitely see that teams look to be loosely geographically grouped (Scandinavian, Belgian, Irish teams together in one group, Georgian, Turkish, Hungarian teams together in another etc). I'm not sure why it's all a bit cloak and dagger though, but I don't think we'll be getting send to the outer reaches of eastern Europe.

A United fan on twitter said if we get regionalised we could get:

Dungannon Swifts of NI
Drogheda United of ROI
Aik of Sweden
Hammarby of Sweden
KA of Iceland.

Or the winners of round 1 ties involving-

St Pats of Ireland.
Santa Coloma of Gibraltar.
St Joseph’s of Gibraltar.

Would love to go to Sweden, you could stay in Stockholm and there would be no problem with tickets. Wouldn’t be the easiest tie there though.

I was in Stockholm a couple of years ago and visited a Hammarby pub. I think it would be a great place to visited in mid July (nearly 20 hours of sunlight and fantastic people).

That said, when you look at the 2nd round teams, there are more than a few we have played in the past. I recall, last season Hibs struggled against Lugano.

Re: UEFA Conference League 🇪🇺

There will be no easy games, even in the 2nd Qualifier.

We are more than likely getting an Irish or Scandinavian team who are half way into their season and therefore a lot more game ready than we will be.

Even these teams from the likes of Gibraltar can't be dismissed. Remember, Celtic went to Gibraltar and lost (Lincoln Red Imps). This is why i hope we get a lot of our signings in early. We want the new group to have played two or three friendlies together before this Qualifier.

That said, very much looking forward to seeing who we get come June 18th.

We are in European competition next season and clubs like Manchester United aren't. Need to just try and enjoy it for however long we're in it.

Re: UEFA Conference League 🇪🇺

If we are the seeded team does that mean the 2nd leg will be played at Tannadice?

No. Believe it or not, it is just who is pulled first out the hat!*

*According Scotland's Coefficient on X

Re: UEFA Conference League 🇪🇺

Yep, the seeding advantage is playing a lower ranked team (although I'm not sure how big a difference it'll make). It's not being home or away first.

Hibs lost in Andorra as well last season or the one before.

Yes let's just enjoy being in Europe however long or short a  time that is.
Is it not about 30years since we won a tie in Europe?

We won our lost European tie nearly 28 years ago.

On the night of Wednesday 30th July 1997.

When we won 9-0 at home to CE Principat (17-0 on aggregate).

Utterly shameful for a club of our stature. Time to rectify that, if nothing else.
