St.Mirren vs Utd - Saturday 5th October

What XI and formation would you play on Saturday?

Bring Middleton in for Trapanovski at LW? Bring Holt back into midfield? Stick with two up top?

Re: St.Mirren vs Utd - Saturday 5th October

Wouldn't be surprised if Moult isn't fit given the knock he went off with (and had to play with for 5-6 minutes).

I'd be happy to see the same starting team as Killie with VDS in for Moult (if not fit).  I would want to see a better and earlier use of subs/tactics switch (game dependent).   That said if we can get a couple up then game management is OK.

Re: St.Mirren vs Utd - Saturday 5th October

Middleton and Thomson did well when coming on late so maybe one of them will start, likely Middleton for Trapanovski.

If Moult isn't fit I'd go

Walton
Adegboyega Gallagher Graham
Stephenson Docherty Sibs Ferry
.........Babunski
......VDS  Middleton

Bring Dalby/MT on asap if that front two isn't working. Wouldn't surprise me if he finds a place for Holt to combat their physicality/height and help defend crosses and set pieces.

Tough game but we should be well up for it.

Re: St.Mirren vs Utd - Saturday 5th October

I would play 4-5-1, Graham and Mani in the middle of Ferry and Stephenson.

2 sitting midfielder of Seve and Docherty, Babunski (10) in front of em with Middleton and Thompson out wide.

Big Sam up top if Moult isn't fit.

Time to get back to basics and defend well, shipping far too many easy goals.

Whilst i don't think that is a bad shout, there is no way in Hell he drops Sibbald.

Not after his best game of the season last Saturday.

Re: St.Mirren vs Utd - Saturday 5th October

I hope he persists with the 2 Strikers upfront.

Yes, we have been leaking goals but that is mostly down to not defending crosses into the box.

To look at the flipside in the short time we played two up top against a good team in Motherwell we scored one (great) goal and had another couple of good chances.

Last Saturday we play two up top and score three times.

That's four goals scored against good Premiership opposition away from home in 120 minutes. Not bad, really . And all without Trapanovski on the pitch, may i add

Tighten up at the back a bit, stop crosses coming in as much, demand that Walton is a bit more commanding at crosses, i think should be our main focus in training this week.

Really hope Moult is fit as a Striker in scoring form is always what you want, but if he isn't it is a good chance to see if JVDS can be more effective just playing right up front in a partnership.

I suspect he can be.

I wouldn't be adverse to Miller Thomson playing up top with a bigger striker.

I am not sure but any two from three (Seve, Sibbs and Doch). I wouldn't be surprised if Doch is injured, that's two games in a row he started.

I just don't want to see Babunski out wide, needs to play as a number 10.

Re: St.Mirren vs Utd - Saturday 5th October

I read this as a big hint that Holt will come back in to the starting 11

"Jim Goodwin has urged Dundee United to replicate their League Cup performance against St Mirren when they head to "the land of the giants" on Saturday.

It will be the second meeting of the sides this season, with United having knocked the Paisley team out of the League Cup in August.

"You know what you are going to get with St Mirren," Goodwin said of his former side.

"They are probably the most physical team in the league, it really is land of the giants when you play against them and you have got to do the basics well against them to get results.

"You have to win those individual battles, show aggression, and match them in every area. That is what we did in the recent cup game when we beat them at Tannadice.

"We are needing a repeat of that performance. It is going to be a difficult game, no doubt about it"

Re: St.Mirren vs Utd - Saturday 5th October

Third away game in a row for me.  Haven't done that since the 80s.  Big game this one.  Very easy to lose.

The boy O'Hara is a handful and looks back to fitness.  I'm not wholly against Holt coming back in but that would need to be for Doc which would lose us some fluidity.  I do think we may need to forego the sideways stuff for this one though and go a bit more direct.  I'd play VDS as the focal point with Moult and Babunski off him if fit. If not Fotheringham for a little bit more pace. Introduce some width as the game goes on.  They are not as much of a threat down the wings as Killie so that should allow Stephenson and Ferry a bit more freedom especially if we have a bit more insurance in defence with Holt sitting in when we break.

I do think Middleton deserves a run too.  2 good impacts from the bench and certainly looked up for it - which is good to see.

Goodwin saying a few with knocks so I reckon that may include Gallacher and Docherty so wouldn’t be surprised to see Holt replacing one of those.

3-5-2 or 5-3-2
If Moult is fit I'd be tempted to start him ahead of Dalby but I can see Dalby playing a part.
Sibbald had a strong game last week - I wouldn't drop him for this. But I would bring Holt back in, in an inverted triangle in the middle that allows Babunski to play behind the front 2.

Is Docherty injured (wouldn't surprise me) but if he ain't, there can never be a situation where he starts ahead of Docherty or Seve in that position.

I think Gallagher will be the other one that is struggling with a knock and Holt will replace him. If so we will struggle without that big man when they start shelling it into our box, Gallagher is the man we want to header it clear.

Will Ferry was mentioned as having a knock too, hope both he and Docherty make it or I do worry we won't have enough. Hopefully Moult is OK too because he's in good form and scores goals.

I don't know if Docherty is injured, but if St. Mirren have two 6'2" 200 lbs centre-halves shelling it forward to two 6'2" 200 lbs forwards, with two 6'2" 200 lbs central midfield bruisers looking for the second ball, I'd say a case could be made that Holt might be a better horse for that course than Doch or Seve.

I am in no way claiming that Doch and Seve are not superior footballers to Holt - not in a million years. In fact, I'd have had Seve in the team more often than he has been recently. After these bruisers start running out of gas after 60 minutes, I'd be happy to put Doch and Seve on at that point, to move the ball around them and open them up.

If Gallagher doesn't make it, Holt would have to move back. In which case it might be time to give the big lad we brought in from the US a start next to Sibbs. Surely he must be approaching a level of fitness by now that would let him put in at least a solid 45 minutes?

I take your point but would much prefer to see the ball on the deck in the middle with guys who can pick a pass.

Odada can't be far away from a fitness side but from the very limited time that I've seen of him he was miles off it, but defo has the build to compete.

That would be a blow, he done the presser this week so you would think he is fit.

Moult trained today so fingers crossed.

Re: St.Mirren vs Utd - Saturday 5th October

Absolutely tremendous,  not the greatest performance but very much like Morton away last season we out fought the opposition.

Good subs and the wee switch to 3-4-3 and bringing off VDS worked well.

Fuck being a St Mirren season ticket holder, they remind me of Caley Thistle side, team of Ross Tokley's.

Was great to see that fight in the players and the clean sheet after last week.Goodwin deserves a huge amount of credit.

Keep it going, Hibs up next.👊

Any news on Ross Graham's injury?

Hopefully the 15 day break till our next game helps all these injuries clear up a bit.
