Should the Romans+The Vikings pay reparations for the damage/slavery they inflicted on this Island?

Very good point that.

No-one ever seems to consider either that the ancestors of African slaves should try and perhaps receive financial reparations from the root cause of their ancestors becoming enslaved i.e. other African tribes who literally looted, raped and kidnapped the poor souls who would later become slaves, and sold them to Western travellers.

The stark truth is that hundreds of years ago the World was a barbaric place and was one huge game of 'Empire', where one empire would try and conquer the other.

Britain were just better at it than anyone else.

Surely the root cause would be the demand for slaves? You can't sell something (or someone) that nobody wants?

The African tribes held the other tribes as slaves. They then sold them for huge profit.

Again, why not go to their door for reparations? It was them who initially enslaved them.

Incidentally, slightly off-topic but there is still a huge (and mostly untalked about) slave problem in Africa, with anywhere upwards of 9 million Africans in the continent considered modern day slaves.

I'm not absolving the Royal family from profiteering from slavery, far from it. Most of their profiteering of the slave trade was in the 16th century, but profited from it, they very much did. Should they recognise that? Yes, possibly. But as the poster Stillliving said, how far back should any of us go to repent for the actions of our very distant ancestors?

You also have to remember one thing. Slavery was not actually illegal at that time, and as i said, the World was one giant game of 'Empire' until about the 19th century.

My point is history matters and the Royal family have blood on their hands. They also have paedophiles living comfortably amongst them. All you people who think you actually matter to these kind of people are deluding yourselves. Royals, Tories and fox hunting, opera going, ballet enthusiasts can all GTF for me.

Just my humble and honest opinion of course, each to their own obviously.

I personally don't matter to them, but they matter to me. As a former soldier I swore an oath of allegiance to Queen Elizabeth. That held good until Thursday past.  And please name the paedophiles (plural?)I don't know of any. My honest but not humble opinion.

Andrew is clearly a very questionable person who was best mates with probably the worst paedophile in the history of the planet, and who's mother (the person you swore allegiance to) used £12 million of our cash to pay off one of his alleged victims.   The FBI had a file on Lord Mountbatten which if you have 5 minutes spare you should go and see if you can read.

Sorry, forgot to mention our new King's very close relationship with the UK's biggest ever paedophile, Jimmy Saville.

An all time low on TT as a link from Slate is used. On par with Breitbart for slavering nonsense.

Re: Gehms in Doubt?

Is anyone else going to pay tributes to the Royal cortege today? I'll be at Powrie Brae, happy to meet any other United fans who don't have anyone to go with.

A difficult day for some.

I was simply giving my very valid reason for my viewpoint.

Slavery wasn't illegal, ah that's all OK then obviously 👍

Re: Gehms in Doubt?

I think it should also be noted that the current Royal family are not the same bloodline/Royal House as the 16/17C version.
Apologising for events from previous Centuries would quickly escalate into an exercise in Whataboutery.
There are plenty of reasons  not to be a fan of Royalty but leave the past where it belongs.

Leave the past where it belongs? Should we allow all the sex crimes committed by high profile people also slide because the past is the past. The Royal family built their wealth on the back of slaves (continued to prosper long after the end of the 17th century too) but you stick to your blinkered British view though

A game of football is off.  It's the consequential lost the heid, slavering at the mouth bit that I am focussing on.  Presumably other threads for your views, probably better forums too...

Fair enough, but the thread had already wandered tbh

AU was the one that started all the God save the King shite though

I didn't think politics was allowed on the board? Neither side is going to convince the other. It just leads to name calling and general name calling

You know my views on AU.  Who knows why he is flaky about this.  Maybe it's all too close to someone he has lost.  Grief does funny things.  I go back to my view - a game of football is off.  I think it should have gone ahead with a suitable respectful silence, but we know that wouldn't have happened at some grounds (even Tynecastle was an embarrassment) and therefore maybe best to have postponed.

As for the historical stuff, plenty more people in all walks of life benefitted from slavery and the ills of the former world.  Got a pension?  Likely you have too.  Happy to judge people on their own acts and not those of ancestors.

Just pointing out the thread had already been diverted from a football theme, is that OK or do I need to provide my passport as proof of adulthood?

Maybe just don't comment and let the debate die out as it was anyway? That would be the adult way surely?

Well I'm not actually drawing my pension yet, but if I was I'm really not sure what it has to do with anything. I've worked my whole life and paid in so will take out when my time is due. But you're right of course, many people benefitted from slavery, but those people aren't being lauded and worshipped up and down the country. I will leave it here though as I'm clearly offending some people and we are always going to be at odds.

Enjoy the day everyone

Let's just say the inherent value of many companies in which your pension is invested will have been based on things that we're generally not too proud of these days, including in some cases slavery.  Whether you are drawing it or not is irrelevant.

Politics and political views are very much allowed on this board. We're all adults afterall.

Probably best to have them in the General Discussion Sub-Forum right enough.

Confirmation has been received that the league will restart on Saturday.

Rangers v Dundee United will go ahead as planned.

The correct decision, in my view.
