Same team next week. Harkes in for Pawlett.
Not expecting anything other than an improvement on our last visit to Ibrox. We should be better though, Shankland is on form and we have Fuchs.Totally agree we should improve with having a midfielder who is comfortable on the ball which will help ease some pressure instead of us just giving up the ball when we get it.
Do you think that we will appeal the Red card given to Pawlett ?
I don’t think we will appeal it.
Nor I. Sportscene had it as a red, just. Pretty sure Pawlett didn't have intent tho. Pretty tame really but the game's going sterile, no wonder players dont know how to tackle these days.
Livi should appeal Fitzwater's red, that wasn't a goal scoring opportunity/last man when bringing down Harkes. A few yards outside the left corner of the box too. He wouldn't miss their final would he?

No point in appealing in the modern game it's a 50/50 sending off. 40 yrs ago it wouldn't even be a foul
I'm not sure why the authorities are trying to turn the game into a non contact sport.
I think the fans (well certainly me) want to see a bit of blood and thunder. Or maybe I'm wrong and the younger fan like phrases like he felt contact he was entitled to go down, he's out of control his foots of the ground, he's used excessive force🤷♂️

Another thing from yesterday Sean Dillon is brilliant on the commentary, loves the shed100% Super Mario. Sean is an absolute toff, he's brilliant. Nicest man in the world too.
For the future...I hope he is in the employment of DUFC in his favoured role for as long as it suits him.
Agreed

It’s a absolutely nothing tackle, it’s a foul and yellow! Wouldn’t win a appeal on the fact they won’t overturn 2 reds in the same game, livi’s red is laughable

Yip some good points above wouldn’t have been a yellow card 10 years ago. I thought he should have bought himself a bit more time, he had the red card out too soon. The Livi red will get overturned and fuck knows what was going through the refs head at that point.
What about Sporle touch and finish that should see him back in the starting 11 this Sunday.

Thing was, to me it was hees instep, alright foot mebbe six inches of the ground.
Zip in it. I've seen socks ripped open - which needs studs.
Get Mentler Bowman on refs panel.
And what was Butch booking about - he seemed to be asking the question no more.
And all the while the Livi boy"s consoling Pawlett - fucked if I know !!
Can I suggest if you have time play Dundee Utd v Dundee, Sc Cup Semi @ Tynecastle 11/4/87.
Younger viewers will not believe it.
On 8 seconds a long ball from Dundee's kick-off is played into Utd's penalty box.
John Brown doesn't go for the ball, he goes for the man (Narey) with his foot up, his leg fully extended.
Referee George Smith speaks to Brown & gestures to him the foot up leg extended action but just has a 'quiet word in his ear'. It was brutality & it got worse.
I was one of 7,500 Arabs there & we won 3-2 in an enthralling Cup semi. The Fun kicked us off the park but you know the best thing, we took it & gave it back, fairly.
I'll always remember a Bily Thomson fingertip save from a free kick very near the end.
Anyway back to my point...there were 5 bookings in the game, 3 them, 2 u,s but again, younger viewers will not believe the challenges all over the park for 90 mins.
Had that game been refereed today Dundee would have had more players off than on.
It's worth watching on so many counts, 25 mins highlights, but it's more than anything an education on refereeing then & now.
Safe to say Pawlett would have stayed on the park back in '87. It would NOT have been a foul.
Btw it's probably in my best ever 20 United matches.
Massacre of 65 is number 4 after the league win & the 2 Sc Cup final wins.
5th is Partick Thistle play-off 2nd leg 1996.
6th v Old Rangers, Sc Cup 1/4 final replay 2010.
Sorry I'm digressing further.
P.S. Never been to Barcelona

First time posting for a long time.
Unbelievable character shown in that last game after we went down to 10. Less than 2 weeks ago we were playing Motherwell and the first half of that game was the first time I was concerned we might not stay up. Players looked like they had thrown in the towel and weren't playing for Mellon. I was surprised when we came out and played a stronger second half there, and since conceding the second at Fir Park we have played 240 minutes of football, scored 6, conceded none, and played a lot of more positive stuff. We look like we're playing with a bit of confidence now as well.
Harkes stood out in the last game after he came on and he looked a lot more dangerous. I honestly think it's because he was asked to do a different job when we were down to 10. I'm convinced his usual role is to play facing our net, look for the ball from any one of our back 4/5 +Benji and to play it back to another defender, changing the angle to allow us to play it through a channel he's opened up. In theory, that allows you to play one touch and bypass lines of defence quickly but there's a risk of getting caught on the ball (happened to him v 'Well) and also some criticise players that do that because they're "not creative" or "too negative". I disagree, but that's a different discussion.
Harkes has a good engine and he looked very effective when he was playing facing their goal, so I'd be happy to see MM take his shackles off a bit and give him a more advanced role in the midfield.
Enjoyed watching the last couple of games, which hasn't been the case for a while now. Hope it continues.
Good Post, welcome back 👍

On this point, we started the season playing 433/451 with harkes playing further forward in the 3 centre midfielders and he was absolute terrible. Couldn't shoot to save his life and looked hugely uncomfortable all round.
Like you say though, he was excellent on Saturday in what seemed to be more or less the same role. With a bit of luck it's not just a flash in the pan and a bit of decent coaching has got him playing like that regularly.
Not enough has been said of his ball through to Shankland for the 2nd goal, that is as good as it gets at any level, perfection!

I've referenced this game about 20 times on here but for anyone that was there, they'll understand. Harkes performance away to St Mirren in the Scottish cup [circa Jan 2019 - we were championship, they were premiership] was excellent. Was his first or second game. He covered every blade of grass, he pressed, he used the ball well, he backed up the play, he used the ball well and looked to create where possible too. ironically we had 10 men for a spell that day too!?
Was a brilliant performance and I thought we'd uncovered a gem. Performances were up and down after that. I think Neilson tried to shackle him to an extent too, to be more disciplined and he was less suited to that type of role.
Coming on and playing an important role in a game is probably where he's at just now. There's potential there for more and be interesting to see how he develops or pushes on. Certainly shouldn't be written off as he has been by some fans where 'loss of form' = 'terrible player'
I've said it before & I'll say it again.
Ian Harkes is on an upward spiral.
In relative terms he's still brand new but I'll tell you this, if anyone is learning week by week it is he.
Watch him go.
