Re: Who would you want as new Manager?

Find some of the comments very strange here......if McLaren was a possibility were we really not meant to have a look and a chat.....maybe not worked out but nothing ventured.....

Sven did this a couple of years ago, picked a club that he had no intention of going to but it got his name out there. McClaren did the same, why apply if it was the wrong time? He knew he would be the star name amongst the applications & get good air time on TV, with his name being talked about.

It was all for him and nothing more.

Think it was Blackburn Rovers when they were in the top league and then he had a tour of Blackburn and changed his mind!

Hearts as well.  He was in talks for the Hearts gig in 2016 when Neilson left.  McLaren ended up going back for his second spell to Derby and Hearts appointed Iain Cathro.

It's probably mutually beneficial, though.  McLaren becomes visible to potential employers and United look like they've got options: a sort of way of saying to preferred candidates, "you're not our only option, so bring down your wage/budget demands."

Then again, it could just be that the papers and bookies, like the rest of us, haven't got a fucking clue who the next manager is.  This is what I think, and I still believe we will appoint McCulloch.

Even though Mcculloch has said he's not interested and wants to join Neilson at Hearts?

Re: Who would you want as new Manager?

Some good info in here. No appointment likely until next week now. Comment about right person for the 'fans' tells me Mackay could be out of the running. Also it mentions some people have been spoken to that havent yet been mentioned in the media... no doubt that will start more ITK texts and screenshots soon enough though. Also some who are currently involved in matches are being considered. UK-wise its only the Prem and Champioship playing at the moment along with EFL play-offs. Doesnt narrow it down, but interesting nonetheless.

Re: Who would you want as new Manager?

I'm sure not all will agree, but I thought Asghar came across well here.  The club is taking its time, making sure it gets the best candidate, and not being rushed into getting the first guy mentioned on twitter who will accept.  Interesting Wright hasn't been spoken to, so I guess he is a long shot at this stage .

Obviously who we end up with will colour all our judgements in the end, but for me things are going as can be expected so far.  Some big names are being mentioned (however seriously), and we seem to be in with a reasonable chance of getting someone that most people will be happy with.

I just hope that the calibre of candidate being mentioned doesn't mean that we aren't all disappointed with whoever gets the job in the end.

I did hear that McClarens wife wasn’t keen

Fucking hell. You do forget sometimes that things like this come into it. Maybe sick of moving considering he's been to Holland and Germany in the past? Disappointing. However, we move on.

Re: Who would you want as new Manager?

It may be that McClaren's wife preferred Parmo to Bridies, or it may be McClaren himself thought the wages were too low.

I'm guessing it might also have been the budget levels weren't at the amounts he expected, which is also fair enough, for I wouldn't want to be overspending, especially at this time.

Tranmere grant permission for us to talk to Mellon.

*is what I heard, anyway.

Sounds good if true. Like Asghar said in his interview today, there is no rush. Speak to numerous people and find the best candidate.

Re: Who would you want as new Manager?

Water story that would be.

If I was a Tranmere fan I'd be fuming given they are currently in the final relegation spot - you'd think he'd want to concentrate on that...

Re: Who would you want as new Manager?

Although i'm glad we are looking and speaking to lots of candidates, i am concerned at the apparent nonchalance regards the urgency of the appointment.

Quick reminder that our first game back in the Premiership is less than a month away and we've made no new signings.

That we haven't spoken to Tommy Wright nearly 2 weeks after Neilson departed means you can pretty much discount him from the job. Asghar obviously just trying to give a polite response.

I find it utterly bizarre he hasn't been our No.1 choice from the outset.

Me too - was led to believe he wasn't interested.  If he is we should be trying our best to get hold of him.  If not then why mention him?  You would think Tony would know if he's a possible...

Re: Who would you want as new Manager?

Here’s hoping this gets sorted quickly and the new guy is in place for starting work next Monday, season starts in 4 weeks.

Mackay, Wright or Levein would all be steady hands at the wheel in what will be an important first season back in the top flight. I would though like to see either Daly or Robson take the number 2 slot with a view to stepping up in 2/3 years time.

ps your damned if you and damned if you don’t Tony but all the fans will get behind however is appointed regardless of the pish  they stick on a message board.

Tommy Wright does not want to work with a sporting director. I think this has been made pretty clear and Ashgar is unlikely to want to bring in someone that would insist on him getting to fuck.

Billy now into 11/8 and Mackay out to 9/4 - seems a big move.  Fits my young hungry manager requirement, knows the club, but has he been out of Scotland too long?

This one yesterday had me wondering too.....

That may well be the case, but other than speculation, has there been any confirmation of this?
Also, in what other line of work would you insist on your immediate line manager leaving before you considered the role?

All hearsay mate.

Though i'd say probably quite an educated guess.

Had a chuckle at Asghar saying we are open to how the Manager works..as long as he fits in with how we (Utd) want to work.

Can't imagine someone like Wright or Levein taking kindly to not being in total control of all aspects of the first team and all that goes with it.

Well you wouldn't would you?

Instead what will happen is people who would have otherwise been good candidates just won't be interested.

Well there's definitely a very good reason we haven't approached him. It's either we don't want him or we are fully aware he won't work under the current structure. Don't see the relevance of your second point. Asghar is the sporting director, Tommy won't work under one, its not really hard to work out tbh.

Well we haven't interviewed him so one of my reasons is likely to be correct.
