Let's try and find a man that wants to stick around and is happy to build something good at Utd and stick around here for years.

That man is (for me) Tommy Wright.

He showed loyalty to stay at St.Johnstone for 7 years in total. I'd like to see him offered the chance to get Utd into a regular top 6 club again and one that is regularly at Hampden and in European competition.

The thought of enduring years of Tommy Wright style football for a number of years gives me the fear. I don't know what it is about him, but I just can't take to the man (probably to do with the fact that I can't remember him ever being complimentary about Utd and the fact that I still can't believe we lost that final to them).

Also I just can't see him fitting into our current management structure. I hope if he does end up getting the job, that I'm wrong and he turns out to be great for us.

I would like to see a Barry Robson/Jon Daly type of coach. I know it's risky.#, but it has more appeal to me than Wright.

I agree CA. I just can't see Tommy Wright 'fitting'. I simply can not see him standing in front of our dugout. I know it sounds daft & I apologise if it does but somehow he just does not 'fit'.

And as regards him not fitting into our current management structure, would anyone???

Good.

U guess it will give the new manager a fresh start but equally, I think they were both good behind the scenes. Forrest seemed like the right character for an assistant and safranko was gushing in his support of mcculloch

What about Shelley Kerr? She's done well with the Scottish national team.  Now THAT would be an interesting appointment

Re: Who would you want as new Manager?

Aside from the obvious baggage that Mackay would bring with him, just looking at his record there:

- Hasn't managed for 5 years now, and looking at his managerial record, he only appears to have had any kind of success in a short period with Cardiff - fair play to him, he did get them promoted into the EPL, however as I have touched on before, these teams are in a different world to us with regard to finance.  No thanks from me.

McCulloch and Forrest - McCulloch seems like a good guy to have around the dressing room as a coach but as for being the No1 - no thanks.  Forrest is a bit of an unknown to me - had never heard of him before he came to United and given he has only been with us around 18 months, I would prefer if he left and the new man brought his own guys in.

Wright is the obvious man for me.

Re: Who would you want as new Manager?

Tranmere Rovers boss Micky Mellon, ex-Birmingham City manager Steve Cotterill and Stoke City assistant Billy McKinlay have come under consideration for the Dundee United job, writes Scott Burns.

The Tannadice club have interviewed around 12 candidates in the past few days.

Assistants Lee McCulloch and Gordon Forrest were also in the thinking but the feeling is that the pair no longer want to be considered.

They look likely to follow Robbie Neilson to Hearts as part of his backroom team.

Former Scotland captain Darren Fletcher has also been mentioned but there has been no contact.

The SFA’s performance director Malky Mackay has been backed heavily at the bookies.

Re: Who would you want as new Manager?

Scott Burns usually spot on with United news. I expect he'll be the one the break the exclusive whenever we do appoint.

Re: Who would you want as new Manager?

Based purely on his c.v. and experience in the game Steve McLaren dwarfs the other named candidates.

● Ex-England Manager

● Fergies assistant Manager at Man Utd

● Won the League Cup with Middlesborough and got them to the UEFA Cup Final (playing great attacking football too)
● Won the Eridivisie with FC Twente (an unbelievable achievement tbqh)

● Done a good job with Derby was just unlucky in Play-Off's (wee Johnny Russell was very high in his praise of his management).

Sure things haven't worked out so well for him since then but if he's applied for our job i would say that indicates he still has enthusiasm left for the game and isn't afraid of another big challenge in his career.

Certainly an interesting candidate.

Re: Who would you want as new Manager?

Or his last 3 jobs have been awful and now needs to head elsewhere (step down too) to get employment.

The standard of his coaching is meant to be really high which is interesting but it’s not been enough at Newcastle, derby on either occasion or QPR to be successful in any way.

His true motivation to come to Scotland would be interesting

Tbf working under Mike Ashley at Newcastle is very difficult.

As an aside McLaren is very friendly with Ian Cathro and brought him to Newcastle as a coach.

Possible Assistant Manager?

I'd be happy with this if it happens. Far above the level of some of the names being bandied about. Huge wealth of experience and great contacts within the game, would be an exciting appointment in my book. He might however wonder what the fuck he was thinking when he sees 23 Accies fans roll up to Tanny 😂

It never is on Tyneside.  Their deluded fans operate on the premise that they are some sort of massive club based purely on the fact that they draw big crowds.  The only manager they haven't hounded out was Benitez and that was only because they hate the owner more.

Very few managers are successful at every club they go to.  Would you knock back Mourinho because he was dire at Man Utd?

Wouldn't knock him back but I might knock him out. Despicable wee shite.

Re: Who would you want as new Manager?

Malky Mackay shortening with Paddy Power & SkyBet, could be odds-on by Monday.

If he wins matches textgate never happened. If he doesn't win matches they'll be brought up at every opportunity & flung in his face.

It's the way of the world.

Re: Who would you want as new Manager?

I'm warming to Steve mclaren a lot.

If he's a success, he gets himself a championship or lower Premier team in England in a couple of years. Also will attract a LOT of interest to united from down south which cant hurt when selling shankland.

If he fails, then its no worse than any other manager. Would still be pleased with robinson holt or wright though

IF McClaren is a possibility, its a no brainer. Simple as that for me.

Despite my constant cynicism re we'd probably be as well off with the tea lady I'm liking Malky Mackay.
Tempered by remembering that when Paatelainen, McKinnon & Neilson were appointed I was the happiest man on Earth at each announcement..

Agree: online it appears I'm not alone in wondering about going to Tannadice if he gets the job. Will United be up for giving refunds on season tickets, for I don't want to be paying his wages?

I feel that there may be a few fans who will say that there wanting refunds or no going back but if he wins games and we are up in the league challenging for europe i dont think many will complain. The ones who boycott will no doubt start to go to games again if we are winning. I personally would be behind whoever gets the job (i know that Malky has done wrong in the past although it would seem he is past it now) but I'm there to support the team.

Theres no doubting his credentials as a manager, was linked with the Scotland job before after he briefly took charge for a game (friendly draw against Holland at Pittodrie if im not mistaken). Dont think he would be the worst appointment - although i would personally prefer tommy wright - mclaren would also be great but i dont see it happening.
