Hearts hope to bring Dundee United head coach Robbie Neilson back to the club to replace Daniel Stendel.
Talks between the clubs are at an advanced stage and a deal could be confirmed in the next few hours.
Neilson, 39, led United to the Scottish Championship title this term, having done the same with the Tynecastle club in 2015 before leaving for MK Dons.
Earlier this week, Hearts asked for United's promotion to be scrapped after legally challenging their relegation.
The Edinburgh outfit, along with Partick Thistle, filed a petition at the Court of Session on Wednesday.
Former Barnsley boss Stendel, meanwhile, was appointed as Hearts manager in November after Craig Levein had been sacked.
The German won five of his 17 matches in charge but did secure a place in the Scottish Cup semi-finals, which will be staged later in 2020.
Former Hearts and United defender Neilson started his coaching career at Tynecastle as head coach in 2014, shortly after the club had been relegated and come out of administration.
Working under then director of football Levein, Neilson won 62 or his 106 games in charge before having a 13-month spell in charge of MK Dons and later joining United in 2018.

Hardly the end of the world boys seriously, I’ve always backed neilson but it’s no like we’re losing a world class manager the players obviously enjoy playing under him but he’s certainly not irreplaceable

If we switch managers we need to start negotiating all over again, who's to say an incoming manager is going to want to go after someone else's targets? Players also might feel let down and may want to fuck off out of the shit storm. It's not really that hard to envisage.

It's not losing Neilson that's the biggest issue, it's losing him right now as the players have just come back to training, and to them! Really not sure why no one is seeing this?

Can it not work the other way, this could be the best time, just promoted a team full of talent, this united job is hugely attractive

Totally wrong timing for this to happen!!!
1/ First the MD suddenly leaving, now Neilson going. I'm cynical but something stinks.
2/ Will Asghar go with him? Seem to work well together.
3/ Court case - a financial disaster for United if Hearts stay up in place of us.
Who's next?
All depends on finances, do we wait until the court case in late July to decide?
-Tommy Wright
-Craig Levein

Tony ashgar ain’t leaving I would think most targets would stay the same, can’t see another manager coming and disagreeing that wee don’t need players up top, out wide and at the back

Yep the absolute worst time for anymore instability, anyone thinking this is a good thing needs their head looking at imo.

A bit nonplussed by this. He has got us promoted. But he has been lambasted for his negative tactics on many occasions.
If he goes he goes 🤷♂️

Fair few negatives wie Neilson. Not too concerned about this. We can do better.
Phuk Heartz . Hope it all goes tits up, good chance.
