I have seen no evidence of that. Can you enlighten me?
All over social media folk saying he should stay.In all honesty, I thought the main reasons folk wanted him to stay was because
1 - he was one of very few who looked like they actually cared
2 - he was a character in the dressing room
He may have done a job in the championship but a fresh start was needed by both parties I think.
Exactly. No need to be slagging the boy. We all know he is no world-class player, but an honest pro who gives of his best.

I kind of agree with "blackandtangerine". A lot of folk thought he should have been kept on. The only reason for this was because he is a good guy and probably gave more than most for the cause last year. Unfortunately his best wasn't good enough, not really a goal threat and very few assists. I think in Willo and Murdoch we have players who are much better than Rankin and Paton. Willo dominated us when he played against us last year. I know he isn't much of a goal threat but Murdoch looks like he might be. Hopefully they can play like they have in the last 2 games for the rest of the season.

I liked Rankin, I actually thought he was a pretty decent player in his time at United. Up until last season when I felt he just looked over the hill. I think he just got a bit more praise in his lat few months as we were so bad and fans look for anything to cling onto in desperate times.
I'm glad he's away, it's actually been really refreshing not seeing him and Paton trundling about in midfield, Flood and Murdoch are a huge upgrade on those twa.

Rankin was really good in his 1st and 3rd seasons at the club. 2nd season he was 'ok' nothing more (though he was subsequently carrying an injury most of the season so it transpired).
His last season he did look over the Hill and it was the correct decision to not offer him a new deal imo.
Though I'm not sure what he's done to deserves some of the ridicule and derision I read on social media and on here and other forums.
Yes effort is the bare minimum that should be expected at our club. But in a team last season with players like Gunning, Muirhead and John Souttar sauntering about like they didn't have a care in the World ,in a team that had guys like Snjeider flying the coup asap, and in a team that had experienced pro's like Guy Demel seemingly throwing in the towel v's the might of Hamilton Accies..... then YES Rankin did stick out a mile in the regard that he actually seemed to care and gave of his absolute best.
It's not his fault he was handed a jersey most weeks after all.

Nobody is saying it is his fault he got picked.

Where did I say anyone was saying that?
I'm saying the ridicule he's faced in some quarters is poor craic imo.
Whether folk are happy to see the back of him or whether they wanted him to stay is by the by.
He at least deserves people's best wishes as he departs. Just my opinion.

John Rankin - vastly overrated by some, vastly underrated by others it would appear.
Ranks has been a decent pro for us, not tremendous and not pish either, problem was him and Paton playing when 1 of them should have done, if he'd played alongside a creative type in that area I'm sure he'd be much better thought of as it was he was the creative 1 of the 2!! Says more about the manager than the player really.
Anyway everyone's got their own thoughts on him, personally I don't wish him any ill will at all, but I ain't gonna wish him good luck for the season!

This thread is like an abject lesson in how to start a fight in an empty house.
Good luck Ranks. He had the heart, but he didn't have the tools anymore last season.

The last paragraph should probably (hopefully) conclude this thread.

Summed up perfectly. Well said!
