Re: Tuesday's Fan Focus #21 - BennyBoy

Before this kicks off, would like to give a shout out and a small plug for the Ceres Arabs, Benny and Roger both do some great work for it, and the Facebook and Twitter pages (@ceresarabs) are really informative and great for keeping up to date with anything United related.

Can't say enough good things about them, and they have always been kind enough to give this forum a few plugs as well in the past.

Ok, on with the show. Welcome mate.

First question: BennyBoy can you confirm to the forum how to correctly pronounce Ceres.

And also what was your very first game watching United.

Cheers, Sieb. Very kind of you. Chuffed that you've said that.

See-rees!

First game was in January 1987, Scottish Cup at Tannadice against Airdrie. 1-1, Kevin Gallacher got our goal.

I was in the Family Enclosure, I've still got the programme. Earlier that day, my Dad took me to Inter Sport in St Andrews where I got my first United scarf (which I still have and to this day wear sometimes to games). I also pestered him for some United wrist sweatband things too, he gave in! I don't have those any more, I'm sorry to say!

My family are from Bolton. My parents were friends with a family from Fife and every year we'd come up to the area on holiday and stay with them. My parents loved Fife so we moved here in January 1987.

The dad of the Fife family invited us to watch United and that was it. My Dad and I started going regularly after that.

Re: Tuesday's Fan Focus #21 - BennyBoy

Don't think we've ever met but got a lot of time for you as a poster, always come across well and an undoubted love for United. Love the Ceres Arabs FB page as well, the best United page I'd say.

Top 3 favourite United players? Not necessarily the best, just your 3 personal faves.

Also, most disliked player.

Re: Tuesday's Fan Focus #21 - BennyBoy

Has anyone seen more reserve/development games than you, can only think of SC and Peter Rundo?

What's your views on Stephen Thompson's pursuit of The Jets and his lack of clarity on that purchase in the past few months?

Hi Trap, cheers!

Having just answered the question about my first ever game, I think Billy Thomson has got to be one of the 3. He was my first United idol, I used to draw pictures of him every day! I was obsessed with Narey too, but I absolutely loved Billy The Fish! I got to meet him at the Hall of Fame when he was inducted. As a kid, he seems like a colossus.

Christian Kalvenes was superb, I thought. I loved watching him and one of my favorite goals was when he got the bullet header at Tyncastle in the CIS Semi against Aberdeen in 2008. Brilliant player and I got to meet him once as well - very nice bloke. It was no surprise to me that he was a major figure when Burnley got promoted.

The third would have to be Stuart Armstrong. I felt like I got to see his whole story, if you like, in terms of his time with United. I watched him play for the 20s and may have even tweeted at the time about what a prospect he was. I was delighted to see him break through to the first team and he was a pleasure to watch. I was really chuffed for him when he started getting games for the Scotland youths too and wrote an article for ArabTRUST about that, I seem to remember. Elegant, always thinking, involved with everything. I was GUTTED when he left but que sera sera.

It's funny you should mention that. Elsewhere on this forum today, BandT was bemoaning the choice of venue for the Development games being Glebe. Brechin would be, for me, I think an 80 mile round trip, so I've actually not been to a game this season yet. They didn't seem to play many pre-season games in St Andrews (that I'm aware of) either so I'm a bit irritated that I've not really had a chance to get a decent look. I've often got mates who are at the games texting me about them or telling me about this player or that player, but it's obviously not the same as being there and seeing who's looking like a prospect.

I'll get to see them at some point, however and I can chalk up a few more youth games to my tally!

Think I saw you at every preseason dev game at St Andrews last season (outwith working hours).

I'm aware that he signed a non-disclosure agreement with the FFA over there so in fairness, I wouldn't say it's a lack of clarity, it's more that he's not allowed to say anything. I assume it's the same for Mike Martin too.

My view on it? Fine as long as it doesn't interfere with United duties. Some will challenge that it's already interfering but there's no real way of telling, is there. At the end of the day, our directors could buy Wick Academy for all I care. As long as United are doing well on and off the park, that's all that I'm bothered about.

What one ground improvement would you like to see implemented at Tannadice...money no object?

Dog, I can't stand cats. I grew up with a Basset Hound as the family dog, I'd love to get another Basset one day.

Loads. To be honest, I wish I'd never have gotten involved, I don't think I came away from it well. All I wanted to do was make a contribution. But there was way too much politicking, and I'm no good at that. I was just a fan. In the end I was pissed off, frustrated and regretted the whole thing.
