Ex Academy Players

Yet another young player Brandon Forbes, who left to go to England, returns to the Scottish lower leagues.  Are their any who have made the big time having left at the earliest opportunity?

Re: Ex Academy Players

There was a really good article analysing it a few days ago: https://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/26446830.painful-truth-behind-scottish-footballs-talent-drain/

The short answer is no as far as Utd go and very few from anyone else. On Forbes, he trained with Arbroath in the summer and they decided against signing him. Makes you wonder if we are actually making the right decision to con English clubs with more money than sense into buying these boys who we know are not actually good enough.

Harry Souttar’s the only one I can think of.

I would agree, until they change the pathways in Scotland for these young players to progress it may be the only way, if the income outweighs the expenditure.

Re: Ex Academy Players

As above Harry Souttar is the only one of the guys who left before really featuring much, who went on to have a decent career. He spent 7 years at Stoke, a few of them farmed out on loan, any money we made was from a sell on, and as long as I have a hole in my arse he'll never be a 15 million pound player, but money is crazy down there, so why not try to work that to our advantage?

That's maybe the route we go down, If a player is snapped/tapped/pried away early, say training compensation is 400k, we accept 250k, but with a 10-15% Sell on attached to his time at his new club, If that can be done?

In most cases we'd get nothing, but 10% of any future fee when it could be 15 million, is better than selling a player a year and getting 150k extra.

Right enough and that was 10 years ago we sold him. He was one of the last products (as well as Jamie Robson and Ross Graham) from the old Stevie Campbell-led youth system that was run on a shoestring under Stephen Thompson.

We've made money out of the current academy system under Mark Ogren and a string of 'Academy Directors' (who all seem to move on after about 1 year to 18 months) but nobody since then who has moved South has made the grade at the English club they signed for.

Times move on but I'd suggest Utd got far more footballing benefit from the system we had under Campbell. Or was it just he was a much better coach?

We’ve never recovered from binning Stevie Campbell, and the manner that Thompson and McNamara did it in was a disgrace. I don’t know what he done differently but whatever it was helped produce young players who were actually ready for first team football by 19/20 year old.

Re: Ex Academy Players

I suppose the other question is, have we ever signed one on the rebound?  Or is it a case of burned bridges.
