Scots In Serie A

I see Kieron Bowie scored his first goal for Verona on Sunday, as they won a vital game away at Bologna.

For someone who grew up watching Gazzette Football Italia on C4 it still blows my mind that any Scotsman let alone several ply their trade in one of the best leagues on the planet.

Our success in this league has been frankly crazy in the past ten years.

So much so, that it was actually pointed out to me earlier tonight that Sampdoria are Captained by a Scot (Liam Henderson) who doesn't get a sniff of International recognition, nor does Josh Doig who's played in Italy for 4 years for two different clubs, has won Serie B and played in Serie A for both clubs (Verona and Sassuolo).

It all started with Henderson moving to Bari 8 years ago, the first Scotsman who'd played in Serie A since Graeme Souness in the mid 80s.

Since leaving Hibernian as a legendary Scottish Cup Winner, Liam Henderson has played for 6 different Italian clubs over a span of 8 years. He's also played for Celtic and Rosenberg, previously. Rather incredible therefore that he's never been close to a Scotland call-up. Even more so given his experience and the fact he's still in his twenties, just (turns 30 in late April).

The full list of Scots who have played in Italy in recent years.

Liam Henderson (Bari/Verona/Empoli/Lecce/Palermo/Sampdoria)
Josh Doig (Verona/Sassoulo)
Jack Hendry (Cremonese)
Aaron Hickey (Bologna)
Lewis Ferguson (Bologna)
Billy Gilmour (Napoli)
Scott McTominay (Napoli)
Che Adams (Torino)
Lennon Miller (Udinese)
Kieron Bowie (Verona)

Two of those players have won the Serie A title and the Italian Super Cup (McTominay and Gilmour). The former also winning Serie A player of the year.

Another has won the Coppa Italia (Ferguson).

Doig has won Serie B.

Stevie Clarke has an an embarrassment of riches. Not that he'll ever admit it.

Compared to previous Scotland Manager's anyway who were calling up guys like Paul Devlin, Chris Martin, Gary Teale, Nigel Quashie, Robbie Stockdale, Chris Iwelumo etc etc etc.
