Scotland - Will we get to the 2026 World Cup?

Qualification starts tomorrow night away to Denmark. A very short qualification campaign compared to other years (thankfully). We could have qualified in just two months time.

Only 6 matches to play in our small 4 team group, but we must win the group for automatic qualification. If we finish runner-up then it's the Play-Off's. Anything less than that and we are automatically out of the tournament.

Fixtures are -

Friday 5th September - Denmark (away)
Monday 8th September - Belarus (away)
Thursday 9th October - Greece (Home)
Sunday 12th October - Belarus (Home)
Saturday 15th November - Greece (Away)
Tuesday 18th November - Denmark (Home)

Will we finally get to a World Cup for the first time since the late 90's?

Will we qualify for the 2026 WC?

Toss of a coin. Really hope Doak can keep fit. No surprise to see Tierney pulling out again.

It's not where you're from it's where you're at.

It's probably the last chance for this group and the worry is there's very little coming through the u21's to replace them.

Too much commotion

At the top level your only as good as your weakest players.
I think Central defence and GK and come to the conclusion that we are highly unlikely to be at WC 2026

Re: Scotland - Will we get to the 2026 World Cup?

Pundits and some fans were raving about how great a result it was the other night, Denmark is roughly the same size as Scotland, It was the equivalent of us going to Dens, sitting, in, offering little and getting a draw.

It's an acceptable result, only if the 3 points are gained at Hampden v them.

Steve Clarke is far too cautious, too safe in his approach, too loyal to guys who rarely offer anything.

McTominay plays in an advanced role for Napoli, why not use him there instead of Che Adams etc

I've noticed that if you offer any criticism of Scotland, even constructive you're see as a boo boy, yet we're only applying the same logic that we do to our club teams.

Already it looks like it'll come down to a showdown v Denmark for the play off spot, would anyone be surprised if the 5 goals Greece scored in 90 minutes v Belarus is more than the total we score in the group?

And even if we make it to the World Cup, who's to say we don't produce as pathetic a set of results as the last two Euros.

The only positive in International breaks is that this time it's allowed us  a few weeks to hopefully get some injured players back.

Re: Scotland - Will we get to the 2026 World Cup?

To answer the question, I think it will be very close, but, I think we will just miss out.

My first recollection of football was 1978 WC. I think it put me off supporting the national team. The TV show “Only an Excuse” just seems a metaphor for the national team.

Everyone on Friday (myself included) expected Scotland to lose against Denmark. The sight of Hanley was sufficient to allow people to form an opinion. The reality was Hanley had a great game and Denmark didn’t even look like scoring (mind you neither did we).

I don’t blame Clarke for adopting a monosyllabic defensive approach to the media. He’s managed to get us qualified for finals - which is an improvement on anything Strachan could achieve. For me, it is about getting results and that’s it. You need to be consistent to achieve anything in
football (or life). There is no glory in beating the Netherlands when you struggle against Peru and Iran.

It is just possible that McTominay, Gilmour, Adams, Ferguson and now Miller all playing at Serie A level, it might be enough, however I think our limitations in defence and attack will mean another “oh so close…could’ve, would’ve, should’ve” repetition.

So, 3 of our 6 games played.

2 wins and 1 draw. Joint top of the group.

Win on Sunday against Belarus and we are possibly guaranteed a Play-Off spot at worst (if Denmark beat Greece at home).

We haven't been particularly good tbh, but so far, so good.

Mental how one result changes the whole outlook.

I don't think anyone saw the Greece victory coming, few would've predicted it, and after watching it, most can't believe we got away with it.

But the only stat that matters is goals.

Scotland just need to win today to pile the pressure on Greece, I still think they could beat Denmark which will put the cat amongst the pigeons, but If Scotland just do their job, there's no issue/

But that's the issue right there.

Re: Scotland - Will we get to the 2026 World Cup?

Completely outplayed at home by 2 teams we should be beating in style.

For me this generation of players is the best we have had in 20 odd years.

The team performances perfectly match the mangers personality and approach to the game. Dull, cautious and uninspiring.

Summed up perfectly yesterday - they were clearly on top, completely outplaying us in 2nd half at 1-0. They had just scored/were about to score the disallowed goal that everyone could see was coming. Clark decided to bring on 2 defenders at home to a team shipping 5 & 6 to other teams in our group.

This ^^^

I can't forgive Clarke for bottling the Euros playoff v Ukraine, the negative tactics in the first one we actually qualified for and the absolute embarrassment of Germany.

That team selection against Greece and especially Belarus was shocking.
I'm not sure who the alternative is but Clarke has under achieved with the best group of Scottish players for years.
