Attendances

https://x.com/spfltix/status/1945584333135167639?s=46&t=o2np0Z11VCW7dNgi80rfpA

I notice on this graph that’s been posted on Twitter that there’s the same difference between us and the 3rd best supported team in the country (Hibs) as there is between us and the fun.

Strange that, all the funsters tell me that we add a couple thousand onto the gates every home game. We must be dishing out thousands of tickets to schools then, that’s the only way to explain it…

This all comes from Police Scotland’s data rather than anything the clubs put out, so is a lot more accurate. The same data has Tannadice as the closest to capacity on average at 78%, St. Mirren are the only team ahead of us at 87%.

The gap in attendances between us and The Fun has really been widening over recent years, I can see us having double their crowds within a decade if ours continues the trend of increasing while there’s declines.

The last half century of being utter shite likely explains most of it for them, but I don’t think their owners do much to help their attendances with high prices and a lack of initiatives such as free tickets for kids, and getting into the schools.

The fact that they scoff at us giving out free tickets to kids is a weird argument, cause a lot of those free tickets become paid tickets in years to come, and that’s really beginning to show in our ever-expanding support. All those free tickets are a big investment in our future support, and it’s paying off.

Our support has grown significantly over the last 2-3 years, attendances away from home also seem much higher now.  Ticket sales for the European game are selling really well and for home derbies we sell out in a couple of hours - there’s an argument for keeping the Jerry Kerr for home fans in the next derby.

Re: Attendances

I can't understand what benefit there is in overstating our attendances, if you say 8,000 come through the gates, then their must be a £'s in the door based on paying customers.

So it would have to be some sort of scam to put more money through the club, to justify spending. Which i'm not suggesting is the case.

It just doesn't make sense.

Some games it does seem the attendance doesn't quite match how the crowd appears on tv or in pics, so it would seem we add paying customers to season ticket numbers, which is a tickets sold vs actual attendance situation.

But again I dob't know what that would achieve,

"Don't F*cking ever offer me that again!"

Re: Attendances

I think we definitely take the number of season tickets sold then add pay at the gate to reach the attendance number that's published.
I don't think there's anything wrong with that given that the season ticket holders have "paid" to be there whether they're there that day or not.
I believe some other clubs do this the same way.

What isn't in doubt is that our fanbase is growing and has done so considerably in the last 3 or 4 years.
I'm expecting we'll announce record season ticket sales this season.
There's a financial gulf to those above us which we need to get creative about but we're definitely pulling away from those below us and we need to keep working on growing that while we're in the positionto do so.

Re: Attendances

Brilliant figures from United. And actually the gap to the 3 clubs bigger than us is not nearly as big as I thought. Echo that our away support is also superb. I would love to see a similar graphic listing these figures.  Suspect we could be taking more than hearts and hibs on average

I actually thought in last few seasons Hearts were getting 20k a game. Same for aberdeen. That is why they have been limiting away allocations. So really surprised to see Hibs are getting more. fans than either of them. Would have thought all clubs would use the same system to report the figures, but maybe some are fudging as suggested above and some are not.

I’m sure all the clubs do that.

Re: Attendances

I was going to start a thread on our crowds when I saw the amount of tickets sold for the Straseen game.
Have to preface this by saying this is not a criticism in any way, just an observation.

We have a core of what, 5-6000 that attend every home game, but in recent years we've filled three sides of the ground for certain games - Fun, Aberdeen and euro games, even when we were in the Championship in recent years we filled three sides for some of the play off games.  Where do the other 3-4000 fans go for the rest of the season?

Its not like these guys are not passionate about the club, I mean just look at the Shed at these games, its the loudest part of the ground.  I know there will be some folk in there from the East Stand and GF but the majority of the fans in there at these games are the ones who come to 4 or 5 games a season.

So why is that?  Cost ?  Lethargy due to the ugly sisters dominating everything?  Boring football?

What could the club be doing to attract these folk to come back to more games?

It really interests me that this happens.   Would be so good if we could fill those three stands for every league game.

Re: Attendances

There will be a number of fans who are involved in kids and amateur football (whether playing or supporting their kids) who do that most Saturdays but will generally make midweek European games, big matches at Christmas and new year, even derbies on Sundays.  Obviously doesn’t account for everyone but there will be a few hundred in that boat I’d imagine.

Think that home core you're talking about is 7000+ not 5-6

The above is true, also affordability will play a big part for some, working patterns as well.

But i'm sure all of us who do attend, could rattle of the name of half a dozen people/mates, who can financially afford to go, who have the time to go, who just don't go along.

Often they're the first ones to react to a bad result on Facebook, Wind up Dundee fans if they lose, and are often the loudest shouters about things the club should or shouldn't do in the group chats.

Whenever you ask "Fancy a ticket for the match, i'll get you one!" every excuse is rolled out, just say you can't be arsed lads, it's ok.

Re: Attendances

I live in Edinburgh.  Last season, because my son had a serious knee injury and needed an op we said we'd attend more United games as he recovered (18 months).  Suspect we managed about 24 or 25 games home and away.  That is the most we have done for years.  It doesn't justify buying a season ticket (but it is a bit annoying when you have season ticket ballots (which I don't disagree with)) but not far off it.  Even then there were home games where there was just something else on.  Away games we would have gone to but couldn't get tickets (Dens x2, Tynecastle x2 and Easter Road (once)).  I also refuse to go to Ibrox or Celtic Park.  So all in we attended most of the games we could.

Next season my son is off to Uni and (hopefully) fit enough to play football again so our attendance will likely fall off again (but not completely).  That doesn't mean I'm any less of a full on Arab than a season ticket holder (especially one that doesn't travel) it just means that other 'life stuff' gets in the road.  Suspect you could fill the Shed  with people like me who will be there one week not the next.

The numbers are going up and that's the main thing.  If we find some level of success they'll go up further.  Anyway home and away for Strassen start the season with a bang...

Re: Attendances

On a larger scale, aren't numbers up across the spfl? When did the likes of falkirk ever limit away tickets - or aberdeen?

Possibly people bored of the epl? A reaction post covid? Either way, it is a good look for the league and this should be driven home to sky etc. I think we do have a better product to sell.

If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

They are.

The funsters just don’t seem to have gotten the memo.

Disagree, we've consistently sold around the 5500-6000 mark on season tickets for the last 10 years or so and there are always lots of empty seats at most home games regardless of what the attendance the club say is there. IMO there is no way there are 7000 United fans at host home games.  That would be the East Stand and GF full with no empty seats.

In any case that doesn't really matter, my original point was that I was just commenting that I find it interesting some folk only go to 2 or 3 games a season when they clearly have a passion for the club, that was all really.

I myself have been away from Dundee now since 2007 so every game is an away game for me, its expensive but I love it, even when we've been in the Championship  in recent years I've always loved going to games.   I get other folk have other priorities though.

We sold nearly 7000 season tickets last season, and had sold over 6000 by mid-May this season. A quick google search will tell you that.

Yes, I know we sold 6000 by May this year but there is no way we have 7000 fans at the average home game, if we did then pretty much every seat in those stands would be taken at these games and there are lots empty at every game.

Re: Attendances

A reasonable comparison for our attendances could be with tonight's attendance and the attendance against AZ Similar circumstances, first match of the season same time of the year home leg first.
10,100 for the AZ game with more away fans than we will see tonight.

Re: Attendances

28 years ago tonight -

Dundee United 9 CE Principat 0

The last time we won a tie in European competition.

The attendance that night ? 6,695

Further proof that our crowds have grown substantially in the last few years.
