Celtic vs United - Saturday 15th February

Firstly, a depressing reality.

Since Dundee United's last win at Parkhead on Boxing Day 1992 (1-0 Duncan Ferguson), United have played at Parkhead a further 46 times without winning (47 times if we include the St.Johnstone Final).

We've also played them at neutral Glasgow venues (Hampden and Ibrox) 11 times in that period, losing every single one including 3 Cup Final's.

Only once did we even take the game into Extra Time (4-3 Scottish Cup game in 2012).

SO, we've played them 57 times in Glasgow without winning since that day Duncan Ferguson scored the winner. It must be one of the worst record's standing in Scottish Football.

However, yesterday was a very timely reminder that football can throw up huge surprises, Plymouth beating Liverpool and Queen's Park winning at Ibrox.

Three words i believe in very strongly are 'don't give up'. I live in hope Saturday is our day, my God, we all deserve it as a support.

What would be your XI and formation?

Edit - we also took them to Extra-Time in the game Willo missed the penalty the day before he signed for them. My mistake.

Re: Celtic vs United - Saturday 15th February

-------------------------Walton
----------Adegboyega  Gallacher  Holt
Stephenson --------------------------------Ferry
------------Sevelj Docherty Cambell
Fotheringham  -------------------------Middleton
------------------------Dalby

Strain to me hasn't been playing his best.  Whilst I think he does give his all, I just dont think much has gone his way

Was tempted to put Trapanovski on, but I think Fotheringham might be a bit better suited to this game as I think he'll get back a bit more to help with the defensive side of the game.

We've played too narrow recently and we need to get that width back to allow for crosses into Dalby.  If the game goes well and depending on Docherty gets on fitness wise, we could then maybe look at bringing Paton on for him to latch onto Dalby knockdowns.

Oooooohhhh yeeeeeaaaaaah!!

Aye, there is, but we need a wee foot up when we play Celtic.....

FFS me.  I changed my mind half way through my team.  I meant to take out Campbell from my initial team.

Re: Celtic vs United - Saturday 15th February

This 12 player starting lineup is definitely one strategy worth considering. They usually have a 12th man so we should as well.

The financial gulf these days means that a trip to Celtic park is mostly about damage limitation. Unfortunately Celtic is not Rangerz....

Hard to tell what Jim G will do but we do need some width as the outball so I'd definitely have Middleton on the left in front of Will Ferry. He likes Kai in these games so he might start on the right.
451 or 541 for me.  Not the ideal return to football but let's do it and move on.

Looks like it'll need to be Trapanovski in front of Middleton.

Hearing Will Ferry is injured.

Surely Holt to left back and Graham alongside Gallacher.

Re: Celtic vs United - Saturday 15th February

Looking at the stats TEK mentioned earlier, 49 league visits to Celtic Park without a victory, only Kilmarnock have a longer sreak without a victory there.
It really is all completely depressing.

It's now 40 years without a non CelGers league winner. I don't think I will live to see a different winner. How much longer will the rest of the Scottish game put up with this?

All other 40 clubs should show a bit of backbone and resign from the SPL and start up their own leagues.

I have very little enthusiasm for this afternoons game but a league without the '2' would be ultra competitive, have different winners and a bit of the unknown, the jeopardy and spread the success around the country.

Fingers crossed it's not a little niggle as Jim describes it, these little niggles take months to clear.

Rumour Holt isn't in squad and is on his way to Derry.

Be interesting to see who plays LB.

Looks like a 451

Walton

Manny
Gallagher
Graham
Stephenson

Fotheringham
Sevelj
Docherty
Campbell
Middleton

Dalby

Ferry injured right enough and looks like Holt is away.

Noticed Fiorini not even making the squad either.

Meek performance today. Couldn't hold onto the ball for three passes. Looked beaten before the game started.

Questions for Goodwin to answer tonight.

Meek, indeed. Really disappointed that no-one in a United shirt ever put the foot in or attempted to make it a battle.

They have better players than us, but if we are not ready to go to War or show any physicality then you get what we deserved today, defeated easily by a Celtic side in 2nd gear.

The decision to play Allan Campbell up front (for me) was bizarre. He was very poor the whole match. He wasn't alone in that.

Next Saturday is a pivotal match in our season. We need to find a formation, balance and starting XI that allows us to create much more chances for our Strikers.

Two goals in the last six games is a very poor return regardless of opposition.

Re: Celtic vs United - Saturday 15th February

An absolute cop-out to those near 900 away fans yesterday who included myself. I don’t mind sitting in with two banks of five to defend for the whole 90 mins or playing 4-3-3 and having a go but there was nothing yesterday, a weak pitiful performance.

Motherwell must be better, that’s us lost 6/8. We’re still in a fine position for the top 6 but lose the next 2 and we’re in trouble of dropping out.

Re: Celtic vs United - Saturday 15th February

As I feared , the players had as little belief or enthusiasm for a trip to Celtic Park as I did
Do Celtic fans enjoy that , utd fans don't .The conclusion being what's the point?
I am however looking forward to Motherwell on Saturday

Re: Celtic vs United - Saturday 15th February

Yeah. Not acceptable. We had a real go at Rangers at home and could easily been out of site before they scored from nothing. The score yesterday is no disgrace, but how we got it is.

Feels like things are getting more and more unequal. Celtic had 3 guys on the park yesterday that cost 7-10M. And another few that if they sold would go for £20M +. We are still a team of free transfers and loan players. League of Ireland it would seem can now outbid half the SPL clubs.

When I was a teenager I still expected United, at home, to beat the Old Firm and a draw was ok. Now it feels like a draw at home to either is seen as a major achievement….

Re: Celtic vs United - Saturday 15th February

Our record there is so poor, we just never seem to perform, much like the game the other week we were too passive and lacked belief the 1st half, the game was gone by half-time, but if we''d approached the 1st half like we did for most of the 2nd, then who knows.

Probably still would've lost 3-0 or so, but better to go down swinging, than just standing there taking punches.

Re: Celtic vs United - Saturday 15th February

I expect us to lose there 9.99 times out of ten but that was very disappointing.
And a bit weird too.
What the absolute fckuk gave Goodwin the idea to play Campbell up front off Dalby?  Crazy.
And he left Adeboyega completely exposed at RB, a player maybe a bit low in confidence getting ripped apart for 70 minutes.
And I get that yellow cards there are a bit pointless if you're 3 down but running alongside an opponent doesn't count as a tackle.
We'll never get anything against them until we're brave enough to play out once we get possession but the players need coaching in how to do that and I doubt they're getting it.

We could’ve played the starting 11 along with your 12 and they’d of still pumped us.

Re: Celtic vs United - Saturday 15th February

900 Arabs there well done.
I've not been for about 5 years but that one was like Attack v Defence, very similar to Saturday I guess.
What about boycotting it, send back all the tickets?
It can't be much fun for them either, apart from the Sheep game they haven't lost a single goal at Porkheid.
And it's only going to get worse.
Something's got to give, as it stands it's a waste of time.
