What’s everyone’s thoughts on the recent report looking at why we aren’t bringing through enough quality young Scottish players in our league when compared to other similar sized countries, often with similar or less money in the league and the same pressures?
So many issues to cover in one post. I will start with my belief every team in the SPL should have to play a minimum numbers of players from their youth set up in a match day starting 11. For example 3 and they would have to be under 21 and have been with the club at least 6 years. Need to find a way to stop English clubs taking every young guy from Scotland that might be good one day and then they disappear and never reach their potential.
We have been doing well on this since Goodwin came in, but prior to that we were signing some utter dross because they were foreign and could maybe get us a bit of money if they were in a World Cup squad for example. I think the developments of players like Newman, Graham and Mochrie were hampered by this recently. Teams like Hibs and Rangers have been spunking money on utter crap when they could have picked up better Scottish players for a fraction of the price. Good example - How Shankland is not at the old firm I just don’t get.not a young player, but seems to be a mentality that just because you are foreign you are better than a Scottish player.
