Programs

Heard on the dode fox today that united have stopped selling programs at games, moving forwards they will be available online, or you can order a printed copy if you really want one.

Possibly over analyzing here, given all the problems united and scottish football face, this is sad news. For some fans, getting a program was part of the match day routine.

As a kid, a program was a part of the occasion, like a souvenir. As a teenager , I traveled on a supporters bus to home games and was too young and baby faced to get into pubs, so normally bought a program and sat in tannadice waiting for everyone else to arrive, reading it from cover to cover.

As a dad, I've kept the programs from both of my kids first games, like a continuity thing.

It makes sense from a money and a sustainability angle, so probably in the best interests of united.

Re: Programs

I know the feeling Kiwi, got loads up in the loft and similar to yourself I used to read it from front to back.

It was always good fir keeping track of the reserve team and I always mind thinking why is this Hamish French guy nit getting a game after reading that he had scored another hat trick for the reserves.

Great for out of town Arabs before the Internet to get details of supporters clubs etc.

Used to enjoy reading wee Jim's manager/chairman's thought but not so much the recent managers or captains thoughts.

End of an era all the same and a sign of the Times.

Re: Programs

I think that the internet has been the cause of the demise of programmes.  What will the programme contain that you won't have been able to read elsewhere on your phone?

Also, they used to be less than a quid to buy.  I'd hate to think how much they cost these days...  £3.50+?  Given the massive cost to watch the game, the travel costs to and from the ground, any pre/post match refreshments and any scran in the stadium, I'm not surprised that less than 2% of the fans have been buying programmes recently.

Oooooohhhh yeeeeeaaaaaah!!

Re: Programs

Used to collect them as a kid and then when a bit older just bought the European ones.  I'd like to think that they'd still run a programme for European ties as a memento, but I suspect not too much call for that at Tannadice over the next few seasons.

At Tannadice the programme was also in decline due to the Final Hurdle

Kids have moved on to social media and podcasts so the modern day Final Hurdle has won out.

For me, with a tinge of nostalgic regret, this is one of the few correct decisions coming out of Tannadice recently.

This.

All those long journeys back from to Dundee to Motherwell via Stirling and Glasgow (then me on another bus to East Kilbride).

Would read the programme cover to cover and The Final Hurdle if it was out that week.

Before the internet these publications were a very necessary time killers as you will well remember.
