Big game on Tuesday night. A bigger game than some may realise.
A run in either or both Cup competitions could prove very vital to our clubs finances in these very trying times.
If Utd have any chance of progressing in the competition, three things have to happen.
1) Utd have to win this match in 90.
2) On the same night Kelty Rangers have to pull off some kind of a result against Peterhead at home. Preferably a win over 90 or a draw and win the penalty shoot-out.
3) St. Johnstone have to defeat Peterhead in each teams final fixture. Unless of course Utd defeat St.Johnstone by 5 clear goals on Tuesday, in which case Utd would finish either 1st or 2nd in the group and therefore progress, regardless.
Confused? Ok, well disregard everything i said above because there is also a 4th option whereby Utd don't win in the 90 minutes against St.Johnstone but still qualify.
4) Utd draw with St.Johnstone but win the penalty shoot-out to claim the bonus point. Peterhead lose both games against Kelty and St.Johnstone in the 90 minutes. Utd would finish the group as runners-up.
So, a longshot that we will progress further in the competition, but not entirely improbable. I hate to say it but the most unlikely of all of the above happening imo is Utd winning in the 90 minutes on Tuesday.
What team would you like to see played on Tuesday? My team would be.

Actually, i've just realised IF Peterhead somehow manage to lose both games against Kelty and St.Johnstone then Utd just need to draw (the bonus point will be inconsequential) to finish runners-up.
In fact if Peterhead lose both games, Utd could finish runners-up if we just manage to lose narrowly to St.Johnstone.
Unless of course Kelty win their next two games handsomely. In which case they would finish runners-up.
Ach, let's just win the fucking match and see where it takes us.

I'd just like to see us keep the ball on the deck, pass the ball to feet, play free flowing football and for McNulty & Fuchs to show their wares. Oh and keep the shackles on Mr Man Bun.

Remember finishing second in the group doesn’t guarantee going through , it’s the 4 best runner ups that get through , haven’t looked at the other groups as still annoyed about the Peterhead result to bother checking them . And as we play our last game in midweek but the other teams play the weekend they will know what result gets them above us either in the group or to qualify from the other groups for the next round

Someone else literally just PM'd me that info.😣
Seems like even a win means we are out.
Good that we've got a game on Tuesday, the more games the better in our quest to improve our play.
Shame tho that the Peterhead result has probably cost us future Betfreds.
Thanks Tek & gaz for the maths etc.

Given we prob won’t qualify anyway, I’d suggest this game is the perfect opportunity to try out a slightly (very) more attacking approach and see if we’re capable of it. There’s absolutely no point in going out with the same defensive attitude we’ve had recently. If we do that and get pumped MM can give us all the middle finger and say he’s right.

Yeah, i agree. Use this game to try out some different players and combonations.
I think i would now like to see.

The team I want to see, but there's no chance he'll play:
Mehmet
Smith Edwards Reynolds Robson
McMullan Neilson Fuchs Sporle
McNulty Shankland

Could be a frustrating night for the fans looking to see something different. I can see more of the same so as to keep the organisation and clarity of message of how he wants us to play just now. We may see a few personnel changes i.e. McMulllan might get a start because of his cameo on Friday and the fact it's a dead rubber game rather than the greater 'risk' of playing him in a league game. McNulty will likely get minutes too.
Overall though, Mellon's early tinkering, flexibility and high press has gone. We're seeing a steady machine and I would expect him to roll out more of the same to get the message across that's how we'll play.
What are the chances of the same starting XI for the 3rd successive game? Pretty good I would have thought.
But with the proviso it's a final opportunity for said same XI to shine before the Accies After 8s come calling in 12 days time.
And if not shining then more flexibility with substitutions, even if it means half-time subbies

No chance at all of the same starting 11

Well there's Shankland of course, he'll be away to Serbia.
So McNulty in for him?
And maybe a change of goalie as happens in the Betfred?
But the other 9 might well start, MM seems to be taking the consisteny/continuity route with selection.
That'll be a 0-0 draw then, St J win 3-0 on pens for the bonus point.

Thon Bolton shouldn't be anywhere near the starting XI. He's done nothing for months. Harkes has run out of chances as well imho. Would also be a novelty to see McNulty, our highly paid new striker, actually get played as a striker, as opposed to a left midfielder where he's basically been played since he arrived, it is a pity since he's actually got a bit of pace and energy, which Clark and Shankland clearly playing together do not and are no use isolated up front trying to press or run in behind, simply too slow to do it. The team is crying out for pace and boys who will actually beat people and get us up the park quickly. I'd like to see:
Benji
Smith
Edwards
Reynolds
Robson
McMullan
Fuchs
Powers/Butcher
Sporle
Clark
McNulty

I’m no big fan of McMullan but he has to start. Just taking the ball for a run up the line brings play 15/20 yards up the park. May make a difference.
I am aware this is a low bar but we need a spark.

Anyone know how to get Premier Sports apart from the obvious (paying for it)?

It's clear Mellon is trying to build a solid, defensive base for us first before then concentrating on what we do with the ball. Trying to drill in the necessary good defensive habits before evolving. Similar to what Clarke is doing/done wit Scotland.
The difference is Clarke done this from day one with Scotland. Mellon didn't. He's changed to that way of playing after trying and not being impressed without squads ability to press in a high energy way of playing.
For that reason, i'm expecting a very similar approach tonight. That doesn't mean tat tonight won't be the night that things click a little bit and start to see some signs of progress.
MM rightly facing some questions on this approach but I can guarantee he's not sending the midfield out to misplace 5 yard passes with great regularity. This sets us back so much and puts us under constant pressure.
What he can do is start working on the movement when we do have te ball and giving the person on the ball more options. too easy to stay in shape and hide at the minute.

Don't ever want to lose games, so I'm not one of those fans who claims not to care about the fixture tonight, but I can't get too excited about it either, given the competition won't be bringing in more than a pittance in income no matter how far we progress. Maybe it's costing the club?
In any case, I feel that the weighting and arrangements for the competition are against most clubs. Yet I'm still intrigued to see what sort of side MM puts out and how the team performs. Whatever happens, I hope for no injuries.
3-0 United, of course. McNulty, Appere and Edwards.

Saw the last 25 mins, didn't look like it was great. Anyone fill me in on how Fuchs got on? Got subbed off just as I tuned in.

Thought we done alot better tonight although still far away from acceptable creating and shooting.
McMullan gets into good positions but he isnt good enough very poor. That first hf when he should have passed the yet he takes another 3/4 touches and runs over the line with the ball how many times have we seen him do this? Very frustrating.
Also didnt think McNulty was upto much!
Thought Fuchs done well looks solid enougb but lacking fitness.
Edwards Reynolds fine Connolly couple dodgy moments again.
Thought Sporle done well.
Subs no the best.
Pens.. Mehmet brilliant and very unlucky with Conways.
Connollys penalty? Balls just been found in Dingwall.

He done aright
If we play three at the back Jamie robson has to play left side of the back three, Reynolds I have never seen a guy so intent with Just pinging it up the park at absolutely every opportunity- completely baffling, again never looked like conceding however again could have played all night and we wouldn’t have scored, the subs were absolutely baffling
Honestly don’t know what to think at the moment, on one hand find it really hard to be critical considering all things- 5th in table etc BUT wtf is our game plan when goals start going in, we will be in real shite, worry shankland will be off cause let’s face it wtf is the point in him even being here if the solution it to just shell ball up to him at all opportunity
Why don’t we play to our strengths rather than completely focus on our weakness, get the ball out wide and get balls in the box

Feel like you could repeat this post for every game this season.
