Dundee United manager Micky Mellon: "Against a direct side who are good at it, we dealt with that on the whole."We're disappointed we didn't play the way we want to, but you have to stand up to the challenge and we did. To lose a goal right at the end is gut-wrenching."

Any chance he is being positive and protecting the players to the media, and then telling them how it really is in the dressing room?

You protect your players up until a point publicly.

But there comes a point where you have to call a spade a spade. Football supporters can see through empty words.

Ours more than most after hearing years of them.

The truth was required last night. Not spin.

Should have been raging.
- He talked the PC shite after Killie saying we were "naive"

Tbf he needs to take a good long hard look at himself.

The minute a manager comes out and calls his players shite in the media he is finished.
Surely people can see this

Nonsense.

Utd lost 5-0 at Ibrox in the early days of Levien's tenure.

He came out after the game and ripped the team apart saying some players just simply weren't good enough and had played their last game for the club (and he was true to his word).

It was the making of him and us and from almost that day onwards we stopped being a soft touch for a spell of about 8 years due to the foundations him and Houstie lay.

To be fair Levein knew he had free reign to bring players in. MM knows he has very little (if any) scope to bring folk in and needs to use mainly what he has.

There would be nothing wrong with saying that the performance was far from acceptable and that big improvement is needed or saying we need to stop presenting gifts to opponents.  He doesn’t need to publicly berate any specific player, but can collectively call it what it is.

And that is all i expect.

I'm not looking or in anyway expecting him to call the players 'shite', as Beharder puts it.

But there needs to be an acknowledgment to the supporters publicly that a performance like Friday night won't be tolerated moving forward.

He is an experienced football manager he will have seen what the rest of us saw.
If it makes some supporters feel better if the manager goes mental to the press so be it , each to their own.
I prefer a calm head both in victory and defeat.

I don’t think anyone wants him to “go mental”.  Folk are just asking for a wee bit of honesty.

Again, you are twisting what is actually being said.

No-one (myself included) is looking for him to go 'mental' to the press.

But we have long been over this course with Manager's. And when you see an acceptance of shite like the other night you almost certainly get it again and again and again.

Re: Utd v Livi - Friday 2nd October (7.45pm)

By not coming out to the press and saying the performance was totally unacceptable you believe then that behind the scenes he will be telling the players the performance was ok.

You seriously think anyone at the club accepted that performance?

Re: Utd v Livi - Friday 2nd October (7.45pm)

Given the previous "we are Dundee United" statements its pretty obvious he'll no be patting boys on the back after Friday night, but I do think he should be saying that collectively its not the standard he is expecting and that the players will also be given that message.  The players also know this.
I stand by my comment though that we need to be winning those games and the nature of the defeat (one shot on goal) is miles, miles away from where we need to be.  I'm hoping the Shankland chat is nonsense - it sounds it - imo Burnley have far better players are their disposal already so why would they want to loan him?  Can you imagine the reaction of Burnley fans?  It would be wtf?  Stranger things have happened though.
For me its a bit early for Ogren to be throwing the towel in after getting us up at the second attempt. However something still stinks at Tannadice and I still remain concerned for my club.

I did get the impression that it was just 'one of those things', yes.

Re: Utd v Livi - Friday 2nd October (7.45pm)

I also wondered to what extent players were playing to instruction.
Lamping it up the park for 45mins wasnae working so why no change at half time.
Why not more use of Bolton's pace.
McMullan on to run at them could'ae been a good change.
5 subbies, none on till 75th minute.

All down tae Micky.

He played okay Friday, and is top scorer, but I'm surprised McMullan hasn't had a shot in behind the striker in place of Clark.

Always felt that's his best position and despite being pacy is somewhat wasted out wide. Had a few good games there early in his United career, a good performance at Dens in the Betfred where he scored springs to mind. In a team lacking a bit of creativity you'd think he'd have a crack of the whip, and I say that as someone who's oft frustrated at his end product.

A fellow poster of this Forum told me earlier this evening that McMullan is rumoured to be going to Ross County.

Given the situation we're in on the park I'd be pretty disgruntled at this unless I saw some proven talent coming in. Going to be an interesting day on the transfer front.
