What Utd player could you never quite take to?

Gavin Gunning.

I actually think he has the raw tools to become a very good player.

But his daft as a brush nature and propensity for blowing up at opponents and even team mates used to drive me potty with him.

Always remember he shelled a cross clean over The Shed in a live telly match and when the camera focused on him he was laughing his heid off.

Added tae that all the self inflicted injuries and apparent lack of respect for the club (latterly).

Re: What Utd player could you never quite take to?

Scott Robertson.

He was great for 6 months then got injured. He never really played well again IMO until the last 6 months of his contract.

He was ok but was frustrating. Sometimes seemed that he couldn't pass the ball 3 yards at times.

That said his 'Roly-Poly's' at Easter Road after he scored against Hibs is one of my favourite ever Utd moments.

Guy was a total loony.

Re: What Utd player could you never quite take to?

There's been plenty absolute guff over the years I couldn't take too, but ignoring them, Gunning is definitely one I couldn't take too.

One that might surprise a lot of people is Barry Robson, I honestly couldn't stand him.

Right now, I'm trying to take too , but really struggling to take to Ciftci. His attitude really pisses me off.

Re: What Utd player could you never quite take to?

Slightly surprising but I'm going to say Brian Welsh. Apart from a good 6-7 months beside Petric he was rank rotten. Another was Freddy Van Der Hoorn. He wasn't a right back, but wasn't really a centre half either. Hmm.

Too much commotion

I never thought Freddie was great either.

Derek McInnes. Oddly I don't mind him as a manager though.

Re: What Utd player could you never quite take to?

Lee Miller just never looked like a Utd player, in fact never looked a player!
Rudi (51) was about the % of effort he put in
James Grady never really rocked my boat
Lee Mair  - Fucking Nightmare
Jim (step over) Patterson, although injuries might have been an reason!

Re: What Utd player could you never quite take to?

Could never take to Luggy's Assistant Manager John Blackley.

His dour and angry demeanour kinda summed up the doom'n'gloom around Tannadice at the fag end of Luggy's time in charge.

Same with Tony Docherty.Though for decent reasons. He tae me looked like a tracksuit Manager you would see shouting angry instructions at wee boys fae the sidelines of your local park.He just looked out of place in our dugout somehow, for me.

Re: What Utd player could you never quite take to?

Jamie McCunnie. He went out with a girl I knew just about the time he was making his break through. The girl told him I supported United, to which he replied "Why the fuck would you support them?!". So maybe not a case of never quite took, just fucking hated.

Re: What Utd player could you never quite take to?

I guess I'm one of those guys who will support a player in a utd shirt no matter what. Some of the reasons people give for not taking to players are rediculous and at times childish. Jeezo, I even forgave Mark Kerr. However, when I look back, I would say some of the players signed under the McCall/Chisholm regeim irked me, espcially those who obviously didn't care about the club and were only there to take a big wage (McInnes, L.Miller, Ritchie, Crawford).

However, I would like to know why someone didn't like Barry Robson. He is the best player to play at United in the last ten years - no argument.

Re: What Utd player could you never quite take to?

I've never got our supports absolute derision towards Paul Ritchie tbh.

Was he really that bad?

I thought he was ok personally.Certainly no Chris Innes or John McQuillan.

Now they WERE bad.

I used tae see him+his wee burd floating about the EK town centre when i worked there about 13/14 years ago.He seemed to be doon there every day at one time.

The pair of them looked like a pair of lovestruck 13 year olds. And he was playing (very well) in our first team at this point.

Re: What Utd player could you never quite take to?

I think it was Ritchie screaming for off-side with his hands in the air rather than chasing down his man in the Mypa game that got a lot of people's goat.

I didn't think Chris Innes was that bad. He played well in McCall's first season although I have heard an alleged story: as we all know, United players were asked to take a wage cut at the end of McCall's first season, with McCall being the one who had to personally ask the players. McCall believes this is the reason he lost the dressing room as most players he had signed, ET had got him to do the negotiating so many of the players felt bretayed by McCall. Anyway, some refused to take the wage cut, others did take the cut (Innes included) in return for a longer contract. Not long after that, we signed Ritchie who came in on a higher wage than many that were asked to take the cut. Innes was quite rightly furious that United had told the players they couldn't afford their wages but could then go and sign more players on a higher wage. After that, he became a bad influence at the club and was quickly shifted out to Gretna.
