Re: Most Emotional Track Ever - 1st Quarter Final

Thanks for the numbers MockChop.

The final match of Round 2 witnessed an easy victory registered for The Smiths track "I Know It's Over". It will now as a consequence of said victory take it's place as the last track in the last 8 of the competition. The defeated track (and therefore eliminated) was 'A Case Of You' by Joni Mitchell.

Round 2/Game 8 -

Jimmy Cliff - Many Rivers To Cross

Released - 1969
Written by - Jimmy Cliff
Songs Background - Cliff was aged 21 when he wrote and recorded the song in 1969. Cliff stated he wrote the song due to the trouble he was having making it as a successful musical artist after originally finding success in his home of Jamaica, beginning at age 14, before moving to the United Kingdom.

He commented, "When I came to the UK, I was still in my teens. I came full of vigour: I’m going to make it, I’m going to be up there with the Beatles and the Stones. And it wasn’t really going like that, I was touring clubs, not breaking through. I was struggling, with work, life, my identity, I couldn't find my place; frustration fuelled the song."

Regarding the line, "Wandering I am lost, as I travel along the White Cliffs of Dover," Cliff stated, "...that came from the number of times I crossed the channel to the continent. Most of the time it was France but sometimes it was Germany. It was a very frustrating time. I came to England with very big hopes and I saw my hopes fading. And that song came out of that experience.

Neil Young - Philadelphia

Released - 1993
Written By - Neil Young
Songs Background - Young wrote this track 'Philadelphia' for the 1993 Jonathan Demme directed film of the same name. Demme originally asked Neil Young to write an opening track to the film. Six weeks later Young sent him over a tape, "We were crying the first time we heard it. I went : 'Oh.my god, Neil Young trusts this movie more than I do' said Demme in an interview regards the song.

The melancholic nature of Young's contribution led Demme to switch the song to the ending of the film, rather than the opening sequence.

Voting Closes Tomorrow (Friday 9th August) at 10PM

Re: Most Emotional Track Ever - 1st Quarter Final

Two great tracks, but have to go for Jimmy Cliff - Many Rivers To Cross, as an emotionally charged song as you're ever likely to find!

I don't know a lot, but I know what I like!
