Most Emotional Track Ever - Round 1/Game 16

The penultimate match of Round 1 witnessed yet another close encounter. The winner of the tie on this occasion (and progressing through to Round 2 as a consequence) was the Joni Mitchell track "A Case Of You". The three tracks eliminated at this early stage of the tournament are 'Cats In The Cradle' by Harry Chapin, 'Broken Heart' by Spiritualized and 'Love Is A Losing Game' by the late, great, Amy Winehouse.

Round 1/Game 16 -

Jeff Buckley - Lover, You Should Have Come Over

Released - 23rd August 1994
Written by - Jeff Buckley
Songs Background - Inspired by the ending of the relationship between Buckley and Rebecca Moore, the tracks narrative concerns the despondency of a young man growing older, finding that his earlier actions represent a terrible mistake on his part in a pivotal moment in his life. And one that he seemingly regrets.

The Hollies - He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother

Released - 26th September 1969
Written By - Bob Russell and Bobby Scott
Songs Background - Scott and Russell were introduced to each other by Johnny Mercer (Co-Founder of Capitol Records)
, at a California nightclub. Although Russell was dying of lymphoma and the pair met only three times, they managed to collaborate and finish the song together.

The meaning of the song comes from many years previous (85 to be precise).

In 1884, James Wells, Moderator of the Church of Scotland
, in his book 'The Parables of Jesus' tells the story of a little Scottish girl carrying a big baby boy. Seeing her struggling, someone asked if she was tired and struggling. To which she instantly replied 'He's na heavy. He's ma Brither'.

The Smiths - I know It's Over

Released - 16th June 1986
Written By - Morrissey and Johnny Marr
Songs Background - The general feelings regard this song is that it's about a dying man reflecting on his wasted, lonely life. My take on it, is that whilst, that is almost correct, it's a bit more simplistic than that. The track was basically Morrissey at the end of his tether being lonely, not in a relationship and 'at odd's' seemingly with the rest of society (hence not being able to ever fulfil his desire of the former).

It's also a track where Morrissey actually (possibly due to his own insecurities and self-loathing) challenges himself. When he writes 'if you're so funny/clever/entertaining (3 of his perceived best qualities), then why are you on your own tonight?'

And towards the end of the track he states 'It's so easy to laugh, it's so easy to hate, it takes guts to be gentle and kind', it now feels like he was ruefully bemoaning what character traits of his he didn't like and sadly reflecting on others he feared he will never have.. Ultimately this is a complex track about someone deeply self-analysing themselves. And being far from happy at their own conclusion.
