Re: Most Emotional Track Ever - Round 1/Game 7

Thanks once again for the numbers Paddy.

The 6th game of the tournament turned out to be by far the closest tie of the competition, so far. Only one vote separated all 4 tracks. The track that eventually won the tie (and will progress through to Round 2 as a consequence) was "You've Got A Friend" by the wonderful Carole King. The three unlucky tracks that were narrowly eliminated were 'Wish You Were Here' by Pink Floyd, 'Black Is The Colour (Of My True Love's Hair)' by Christy Moore and finally ' Brothers In Arms' by Dire Straits.

Round 1/Game 7 -

Stevie Wonder - Lately
https://youtu.be/bozH0O_cVhY
Released - 29th September 1980
Written By - Stevie Wonder
Songs Background - This track was Wonder's 4th single release, taken from his 1980 album 'Hotter Than July'. Featuring only Wonder's vocals, piano and bass, the song is a fragile and remorseful love ballad which is written in terms of a partner who suspects their lover is cheating on them with another.

The Beautiful South - Old Red Eyes Is Back
https://youtu.be/NkhvhRBIu_c
Released - February 1992
Written By - Paul Heaton and Dave Rotheray
Songs Background - Heaton's lyrics deal with a man named 'Old Red', clearly a man suffering with alcoholism, as Heaton has himself suffered at several times in his  own life. The verses detail Old Red's drinking habits and how it is affecting his health ("he pours another drink and listens to his body thaw") before the final verse announces "Old Red, he died..."

The chorus reminisces about the things he has sacrificed for his drink: "all the things I could have done instead".

The subject matter is a common theme throughout the Beautiful South's material, but "Old Red Eyes Is Back" is arguably the most graphic account of the perils of alcoholism amongst their song catalogue.

Glenn Campbell - By The Time I Get To Phoenix
https://youtu.be/7y1hrOpVGKE
Released - 23rd October 1967
Written By - Jimmy Webb
Songs Background - The inspiration for "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" originated in Jimmy Webb'
s break-up with Susan Horton. They remained friends even after her marriage to Bobby Ronstadt, a cousin of singer Linda Ronstadt. Their relationship, which peaked in mid-1965, was also the primary influence for "MacArthur Park", another Webb composition.

Samuel Barber - Adagio For Strings
https://youtu.be/izQsgE0L450
Released - 5th November 1938
Written By - Samuel Barber
Songs Background - English composer Barber originally finished the arrangement in 1936, the same year that he wrote the quartet. It was performed for the first time on November 5, 1938, by Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini for a live radio broadcast.

The track came to real public attention in the U.S. some 25 years later when it was played on U.S. television at the announcement of President John. F. Kennedy's death.

Voting Closes Later Today (Thursday 20th June) at 10PM
