Re: Most Emotional Track Ever - Round 1/Game 5

Thank you for the numbers Patrick.

The 4th game of Round 1 witnessed victory registered for the track "Crying" by the late, great Roy Orbison. This victory means the track will now progress through to the next stage of the competition. The three tracks eliminated at this juncture are 'Katy Song' by Red House Painters, 'Both Sides, Now' by Joni Mitchell and 'We'll Meet Again' by Wartime sweetheart, Vera Lynn.

Round 1/Round 5 -

Johnny Cash - Hurt
https://youtu.be/vt1Pwfnh5pc
Released - March 2003
Written By - Trent Reznor
Songs Background - The song was originally written in 1994 by Trent Reznor, singer/lyricist with 'The Nine Inch Nails'. The song includes references to self harm and heroin addiction, although the overall meaning of the song is disputed. Some listeners contend that the song acts as a suicide note written by the song's protagonist, as a result of his depression while other listeners of the track claim that it describes the difficult process of finding a reason to live in spite of depression and pain.

The Kinks - Some Mother's Son
https://youtu.be/seMc_UaE3FQ
Released - 10th October 1969
Written by - Ray Davies
Songs background - The song is essentially an Anti-War track. But in terms of the concept album the track appeared in 'Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire)', the song is about the death of Arthur's (the albums protagonist) Son in the Korean War.

Kate Bush - This Woman's Work
https://youtu.be/iEHqPCA_lzQ
Released - 20th November 1989
Written by - Kate Bush
Songs Background - The lyric of "This Woman's Work" is about being forced to confront an unexpected and frightening crisis during the normal event of childbirth. Written for the movie 'She's Having a Baby',
director John Hughes used the song during the film's dramatic climax, when Jake (Kevin Bacon) learns that the lives of his wife, Kristy (Elizabeth McGovern, and their unborn child are in danger.

As the song plays, a montage sequence of flashbacks is displayed, showing the couple in happier times, intercut with shots of him waiting for news of Kristy and their baby's condition. Bush wrote the song specifically for the sequence, writing from a man's (Jake's) viewpoint and matching the words to the visuals which had already been filmed.

ABBA - The Winner Takes It all
https://youtu.be/iyIOl-s7JTU
Released - 21st July 1980
Written by - Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus
Songs Background - "The Winner Takes It All" - which had the original demonstration title "The Story of My Life" - was written by Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. Ulvaeus's marriage to Wife (and fellow ABBA member) Agnetha Faltskog had came to and end the year previous to the release of the track and the divorce was finalised around the release time of the single. Ironic because the lyrics were a reflection on the separation and 'parting of the ways' of the two. Fellow ABBA lyricist Benny Andersson's marriage (to fellow ABBA member Anni-Frid Lyngstad) was also coming to and end at the time of the singles release, adding greatly to the poignancy and emotion of the track to many.

Voting Closes Later Today (Sunday 16th June) at 10PM
