Ray Charles and Betty Carter - Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye
Released - 1944
Written By - Cole Porter
Songs Background - Like many 'Wartime love songs' the lyrics and melody are suitably sombre and emotional. The lyrics are intended to be a reflection of how happy the singer is in the company of their beloved, but suffering equally whenever they separate. Describing it by analogy as a musical "change from major to minor", Porter begins with an A♭ major chord and ends with an A♭ minor one, matching the mood of the music to the words

Eva Cassidy - Autumn Leaves
Released - May 1996
Written By - Joseph Kosma, Johnny Mercer and Jacques Prevert
Songs Background - Written in late Wartime this jazz standard was written by French composer Joseph Kosma and lyrics by fellow Frenchman Jacques Prevert, and later adapted to English language by Johnny Mercer. Eva Cassidy's version was recorded 'as live' at a Jazz club in Washington D.C. in January 1996 and released 4 months later. During the promotional events for this live album Cassidy noted a pain in her hips, which she attributed to stiffness from painting murals while perched atop a stepladder. The pain persisted and X-rays revealed a fracture. Further tests sadly found that cancer had spread to her bones, causing the fracture, as well as to her lungs. Her health deteriorated rapidly and tragically, Cassidy would die in November, just 6 months after first realising her initial symptoms.

Randy Crawford - Almaz
Released - November 1986
Written By - Randy Crawford
Songs Background - "Almaz" was written about a couple of Eritrean refugees who were neighbours of Crawford's. The man asked Crawford to write a song about his wife, who was named Almaz (which means "diamond" in Amharic, Arabic and a number of other languages). In the song, the singer reflects on their rare form of love. In Crawford's own words, "I witnessed this perfect love affair between them, although she was considerably younger than him. This beautiful couple with their baby. As refugees they were looking for 'a world where love survives'.
