I may come across as a heartless miserable old bastard here, but
Why are we having a minutes applause today for a player who had no links to United. Will there be a minutes applause at Celtic park when Dave Narey passes? a man with more appearances and international caps than Mcneil and IMO a better player.
Rant over.

Probably no. Even tho as you've pointed out that Narey played 35 times for Scotland, but McNeill played only 29 times. Narey played 612 times for United, McNeill played only 486 times for the boyos.

another example of Scottish football hypocrisy here, reminds me of the Phil O'Donnell incident.
A horrendous event that happened; and rightly Motherwell games were postponed for some reason so were celtics as he had played for them in the past. Yet the team who were the opposition of Motherwell had to play the following week and even the hardiest of of people must have been affected by seeing a fellow pro collapse on the field -made no sense to me at the time.
Sorry been waiting years to get that one off my chest.

Be harder we've had our differences of opinions in the past but 100% behind you on this.

Agree. It was just as harrowing for utd fans and players. I was there that day and I'll never forget it.

There are too many minutes silences/applauses at football games. I’ve always said they should be reserved for football related people and it should always be a silence imo.
Completely disagree with Remembrance Day silences or anything non-football at football grounds
Can understand folk asking why we had one for an ex Celtic player, however this is one I do agree with (although should have been a silence). Folk like Billy McNeill are true Scottish legends and deserve this respect. There aren’t that many of them but fwiw I’d fully expect David Narey, as one of those true Scottish legends, to receive the same respect at every Scottish ground.

It was good to see the names of arabs no longer with us on the"big" screen at HT.
Another small step in bringing the club back together again.

I'm a wee bit upset folk touting Davie Narey for a minute's silence, he's younger than me.
I bet Davie isnae too chuffed either.

I actually got goose bumps when it came to an end and the support sang, we love United, we do".
Maybe after seeing so many folk tapped intae it who maybe lost close family and friends.
Totally took me by surprise that emotional connect.

I'd say Billy McNeill deserved a minutes silence (rather than applause).
The first and sadly only Scot who will lift aloft the biggest prize in European football for a Scottish team (most probably).
Despite not liking his team much, that has to be respected.
P.s. I don't like to think about a World without Davie Narey in it, but when the time comes I hope he is afforded a similar type of respect/admiration in Scottish footballing circles.
Scotland is only a wee country. We should cast our tribal loyalties aside and acknowledge and celebrate our true heroes (sporting or otherwise) in death.
Just my tuppence worth.

Don’t mind if we need a minutes applause or silence every week if someone deserves respect for their achievements

Agreed.
Respect has to be earned and i’d say that Billy McNeill earned his, no matter which teams he played for or managed.
It’s a small ask to be silent or applaud in these circumstances.

I prefer a minutes silence rather than applause but I read that it was his families wish that it was applause rather than silence.
We'll soon be having minute's silences because there's nothing to have minute's silences about

One other small point, McNeill was afflicted by frontotemporal dementia, like, Frank Kopel. Maybe we should remember how devastating this condition is for both the sufferer and his family. How many more 1970s defenders are going to suffer this?

Didnt agree with it either.
Also to add.. the names utd fans no longer with us on the screen at half time but they could have made it bigger.

Was there too mate, absolutely horrible standing behind the goal, overall feeling of helplessness that nobody could help him.

Met McNeill a couple of times. For what he had achieved in the game he was a very unassuming, humble man who had a lot of time for football fans generally. Yes, Celtic through and through and no connections with United, but if we can't 'celebrate' the life of a genuine footballer like him just because he doesn't have a connection with our club, for me, that would be a sad state of affairs.
