Aye that's a belter. Same season a few weeks later when we pumped Aberdeen 4-0 at Tannadice, Pressley scored two.

Think that was New Years Day 1997.
We were unreal from the Oct 96 to about April 97.
Online!
Not quite christmas, but in the christmas/new year period

Since it's "Favourite Utd games at Christmas time?", I'll go for three around Christmas '84.
All three involved Eamon Bannon free kicks landing in the net via Richard Gough's head, and from memory the goals were all very similar.
The matches were Aberdeen (a), Celtic (a) and Aberdeen (h), all played in a spell a from 22nd December '84 to 2nd January (85). We won all three, with Gough getting the winner in each game.
Cannae see us repeating that sort of series of performances any time soon, unfortunately.
Edit: I had an impossible time frame there for the games, sorry.

Old one tho mind it like yesterday, new year derby v the fun 1970, result 4-1 the Arabs. With my new tangerine and black scarf I saw an own goal by Doug Houston(I think),followed by a Davy Wilson header. Somebody scored for the fun but it was followed by two sublime finishes by King Kenny Cameron, there was a player who rarely missed any half chances,o happy memories.

It was Jim Easton who scored the own goal. Didn't the scoring go in a different order, Shed69?
That season had started well, but the New Year game was about the highlight for the rest of the season. I mind having to do a talk about the Christmas holidays at school, where the task was to tell of the best and worst bits of the time off.
I chose that win against Dundee as the best, and the defeat from St Johnstone a couple of days before as the worst.
Nobody in the class (or the teacher) had a clue what I was talking about. Perfect.

Another all time favourite of mine.
Closer to xmas than others being on 20th December 1986.
Edit to say, wether you've seen this afore or not it's well worth a watch 1st time or again. 2 teams going all out attack, fast n fkn furious, aggressive but fair as fuck with it (other than the cheeky whack to Bannon's puss)
A couple of very memorable goals to add to a typical Luggy finish.

United 2 - Septic 0 on 17th December 1988.
Narey on McStay at just after 3 mins 10 in and Badger on Grant a few seconds later are tremendous take that ya @%#$£*# examples of used to be dished out without a media outcry for weeks on end.
The roof just about came aff the Shed that day.

That was one of the best birthday presents ive ever had that day.
Loved matches like that back in the day. Great atmosphere and a big crowd. Standing at the segregation fence. Great times.

Was that not Darren Jackson's debut and his leg got broken? Would explain Narey and Badgers fierce challenges after it. Proper fitba.

This is my favourite too. Fergusons strike then pointing and laughing at Henry(whats the score) Smith.

The commentator when United were given the penalty:
"It looked as though Gallacher stumbled without being touched." As clear a penalty as you'll ever see.

We were absolutely outstanding that day. Personally I thought we played better that day than the 5-0 game a year later. Aberdeen had a stronger team that day too.

Mr P thank you for posting that Celtic game i haven't seen the footage since it was on Scotsport that night back in '88.
As LAO said that was Darren Jackson's debut. I was really excited to see this new Striker from Newcastle Utd and my heart sank as he went off with a broken leg after just 5 minutes...'typical Utd luck' i thought.
Bowman also went off injured and the tackles were certainly flying in thick and fast as we witnessed.
Badger's on Peter Grant would not only be a straight red now but would see him probably face a lengthy ban. It's a shocker.
Listen to that crowd btw on both sides of the ground. Huge roars everytime there's an attack or contentious decision.
I know it's better in life to look forwards rather than backwards but by God i miss those days.
The atmosphere, the colour, the strips, the out and out attacking fitba.
They were magical times.
p.s. think we beat Celtic 4 times that season. Just a few months after losing the Cup Final against them. Again 'typical Utd'.

If you look again LAO it's actually Jackson that injures himself.
He goes in 'full blooded' as they did back then.

Agree with every word of that. Scottish football was really great back then.

Yep, we blew them away in that game. Winters, Olafsson , McLaren and McSwegan - oh to have those 4 guys in our squad now.

Thanks Pat clearly can't remember it as well as I thought, was the og nearer half time? What I can remember is the fun keeper losing his footing and the ball ball just rolling in from the pass back

Nae bother bud, I thought a lot of the same last night. I never had this ain in my memory banks as a revenge win on that recent Hampden experience at the time. Mind goin mental in the Shed and the noise levels when we sang after scoring being louder than ever.
Think the current players should be forced to look at the highlights of some of these games.
Tactics and rules have changed but why can't some of the great things we see there not be incorporated into our style and effort.
