Dundee utd vs partick thistle play off first 1996

Total long shot but can anyone guide me in the direction of any highlights of the first leg at Firhill. I ve seen the second leg hundreds of times but it dawned on me that I can't recall ever seeing the first leg highlights.

I was at the game and remember their keeper Nicky Walker having the game of his life! I remember Dailly scored late and utd took a great away support , but the rest is foggy.

I ve looked on utd archive, but there's no link to highlights. I ve checked the usual media.....you tube etc, but nothing. I assume the goals would of at least been broadcast on the next days news at least?
Can anyone shed some light on this?

I can't remember  ever seeing TV footage of this game. Only memories are being really nervous, a good header by Dailly late in the game, and thinking as I left firhill that a draw was a good result as we'd win comfortably at Tannadice

I'm sure I saw a video of the goal on the tv news but I've never seen it since or online.

The Old Firm weren't involved, hence no TV coverage. I can't remember seeing anything from that game, but as LAO says there might have been goal highlights on the tv news.

After the very late Dailly equaliser, did he not almost score again, maybe even hitting the bar? Or had I hit the bar too much before the game?

Re: Dundee utd vs partick thistle play off first 1996

I don't think there was any official coverage of the live games in the 1st Division (you'd get some goals on Scotsport) by any of the TV companies that season and believe that Grampian showed the 2nd leg as a one-off.

Like others have mentioned, I'm sure I have seen Daily's goal though on a new bulletin.

Can't help with footage issue but two memories from the game -
- like Kiwi I left thinking 'good job', 2nd leg at home to come....
- David Craig was playing for them & we later signed him, don't know why I remember that but I do
And mentioning the 2nd leg at home, it is the one United game when I had the most mental goal celebration (Brian Welch) & I've been watching for 55 years. #2 mental goal celebration was David Robertson's winner in the Cup replay v the old Rangers, I almost threw myself from the GFU to the GFL. Both these goals were very (very) late of course which figures...!

We signed David Craig from the 'Shire, and that was at the start of the relegation season. He was gone by the time we played Thistle in the play-offs. He wasn't great, but had a long career.

Re: Dundee utd vs partick thistle play off first 1996

My memories are scant - we played on a beach. Think Hamilton played their home games at Firhill that season and the pitch was gubbed, not a blade of greenery anywhere. Also there was "tango man" or even 2 of them, not a pretty sight, still have nightmares.

Bring back the (real) "United Way" not the kiddy-on Martin version

Aye that goal by Welshy is probably the mentalist I have went at a game.  The feeling of relief was palpable.  Felt like the ball was in the air for about half an hour before he got his head on it!

That's what happens when Arab Archive is down.
Wonder where I got that from then?

It's easy to mix folk up: Davie Craig was in the Ayr side which put us out the cup as a 'shock' in 2002 (I think). He was around a bit.

Scott Crabbe scored in first game and replay for Ayr. James Grady was also in their team.

Re: Dundee utd vs partick thistle play off first 1996

Here I go again without looking it up....
Was that the replay when Ayr (now pundit Andy Walker?) didn't score from a pen.
I didn't say 'missed' cos he battered the ball down the middle of the goal about head height.
Sieb Sieb Sieb Sieb just stood there, he didn't move & the ball cannoned off his sizeable chest & rebounded outside the penalty box where the ball was cleared. It was quite funny, Walker couldn't believe it and I sometimes call it the best penalty save ever. Any pic on it??

Sieb was well away from United by then, it was probably Paul Gallacher in goals. And I can't think Walker would be playing, if Crabbe and Grady were up front for Ayr.

That must have been the '99 cup game- I missed it due to an operation.

Re: Dundee utd vs partick thistle play off first 1996

Thank you for all the answers guys. I m quite confident the game is lost for good. I m sure it was on the news but the chances of any United fan still having that on vhs must be slim .

Yes pat reilly I seem to recall Dailly missing a golden chance right after that goal. I also remember the two tango guys were there too and done a wee lap of honour before the game kicked off!

The only other thing I remember was the sun or the daily records back page headline said lyons 1- Christians 1 the next day.

As for the second leg, I m so jealous I wasn't there. The crowd for Welshy's goal looked incredible

Re: Dundee utd vs partick thistle play off first 1996

The atmosphere that day was electric.

Don't care what anyone says that was the way to watch football.Big packed open terracing, flags passing over your head, the smell of tobacco in the air, singing even before kick-off in the stands and in the queues.

Come to think of it this must be one the last games i attended where i stood on a packed terracing following Utd.I miss those days,i really do.

Ridiculous that there is no footage of a big game that was only 21 years ago but not all that surprising either.

Kind of sums up the contempt that provincial clubs in Scotland are held in by the broadcasters.
