Is our squad any better than last season?
No for me.
Massively dissapointing.

Do we hae a 'squad' ?

Not at this point with so many going compared to what's Been brought in
However I expect them to bring in 4 or 5 more by inverness
The season hasn't started, so how do you know?

If we sign a midfielder, goalkeeper, defender / get rid of Donaldson and at least one striker with pace, I'll feel a bit bettet about things.
The thing is, we are pretty skint and play in the Championship with about 4000 season ticket holders. I'm not sure what sort of squad people expect us to have?
I will say though I expected more players identified by Darren Taylor.

Why he's a fully qualified roofer or some fucking thing who's been handed a job that should have been advertised to see who was available from elsewhere.

This is pretty much where I am. Another striker, mid and defender (would be happy with Quinn) and I think we'll be a bit better than last season.

We have a lot more exciting options going forward especially in the wide areas. McMullan impressed at Dunfermline and King has experience to get out this league along with Keatings. Scobbie is an upgrade on Dixon and Quinn will be an upgrade on Donaldson should he find a new club.
We're a couple of midfielders short and a striker. Ray is aware of this judging by his recent interviews. We're only in early July a good three weeks to get the signings in we need.
Would rather we got the signings right rather than rush into purchases just cos we have a game against Raith.
Chance for youngsters to stake a claim imo
Agreed Scarpia. I'm looking forward to seeing our starting XI on Saturday & expect to see at least one Smith as well as Allardice in the team. Great chance for them to impress in a competitive game. We have plenty time yet to bring in any keynote signings.

Agreed. Everyone is anxious about the new season but we've seen what happens when we rush things.

We've lost 13 (by my counts) from a threadbare squad that was too light last season and brought in 5 and added some youngsters who Ray doesn't like to play. So off to a good start.
If we take our likely starting eleven, we only have 3 replacements - Donaldson who nobody rates and United are keen to punt, Tosh who nobody rates and Robson, a youngster who has yet to hold down a 1st pick in the eleven and other (largely untried) youngsters
We have lost our 2 top scorers and whether Keatings and N'Koyi can replace them is yet to be seen. We are starting the season again without a target man so restricting our attacking options. In a team devoid of creativity from the midfield, we have added zero. For a defence that conceded far too many against this standard of opposition we have added just one, Scobbie to replace the 3 that left. At the time of writing we don't have a back up keeper.
Given our form in the 2nd half of last season (apart from the wee bit of Wato input in the paly-offs) was relegation material - yes we were the worst performers in the 2nd half and that we are going with a much lighter squad with no apparent significant increase in quality, the outlook may well look orange/brown but not necessarily bright.
The biggie for me is the lack of recognition from our gaffer that he got the tactics and selections (and most of his signings) horribly wrong last time out and that he has learned from his many mistakes and is ready to do things differently from now on.
Confidence level going into the season (of going up) 2 or 3 out of 10 at this point. Think we need some more signings (Quinn and Mehmet for a start +2) and confirmation that Ray is up to the job

For me, it's absolutely better than last season, I feel every player we've signed is a big upgrade on what we had last season. Obviously we're not finished yet, but surely biding our time and getting the right players is better than panic buying and getting boys like VDV, Nicholls and Obadeyi?
Keatings for me is a big upgrade on Murray, Scobbie's a leader and better defender than anything we had last season, he should help us stop conceding stupid goals caused by Dixon and Robson's inability to stop cross balls, the same could be said for Quinn on the right side of defence if we sign him, as looks likely. Getting width and quality in the width was Ray's most important task this summer IMO, early signs look promising in this regard. And any keeper we sign is surely gonna be an upgrade on Zwick.
A couple of central midfielders, one, maybe two strikers and a left footed wide player to give us a bit of balance, and we'll be ready to rock and roll.
We should have enough to see us through the group stages, but chances are, we're not gonna be winning the Betfred Cup this year, so it wouldn't be the end of the world if we get put out early, as long as we beat Dundee, I'm happy. Thon Irn Bru cup should be ditched at the earliest opportunity, put the u16's out in the first round and ensure we get put out immediately. The players need as much recovery time as possible, and there's far too much at stake for us to be fannying about with diddy cups, I took no pleasure in us winning it last season, and I certainly won't this season.

Jeez - it's doom and gloom city here, isn't it
Right - players that left - detailed.
Past it players vd struijk, Dillon, Dixon
Players who weren't going to improve
Coote, zwick suker, telfer
Players who the majority of fans get a right boner about slagging off.
Murray sputtal mikkelson
Players who were as mad as a box of frogs
Kuate.
So what we have done is got rid of a bunch of players either aren't v good, weren't giving us value for money or had a losing mentality and have made some key signings. It's difficult to say as I've only seen the 1 pre season game (montrose) but there's real reasons to be hopeful.
McMullen looked fantastic - quick, skilled, wants to beat a man but not the frustrating type of winger (like gms for instancs ( who waants to beat the sane man 100 times before sticking a cross in
Scobie may prove to be the championship signing of the summer. Adds the st Johnstone winning mentality to and the way he talks during a game. If we keep him fit he will be invaluable.
Keating has a proven record at this level and has experience of winning at this level - looked good. Billy king is the same.
N'koyi will be a surprise to us all - nobody knows what he's capable of but looked a confident lad with a good touch.
In all honesty, apart from needing a few in, we have probably had the best window of all the teams in the championship.
Also love whoever it was who stated we were relegation material - why not also point out we were top of the league at 1 point and were 90 minutes from promotion? Even if the point was valid, then the heart of that team (the relegation team) has been removed
I would also think we have much more fiscal maturity at the club ensuring we aren't over spending which is exactly what we should not be doing.
Let the promised signings come in and give them a chance.
In a. Side note - read a match report from narrows game v Blackburn. The Scottish trialist was described as a marauding right back. Let's hope he's impressed enough to get Quinn in

Having seen them at Montrose, there was definitely an improvement in the wide areas. We are still far too thin on the ground however but we just need to be ready for Inverness IMO

Having seen us vs Montrose and Peterhead im actually optimistic. A line up of:
Bell
Murdoch Edge Durnan (quinn) Scobbie
Flood
King Mcmullan
Fraser
Keatings Nkoyi (another striker)
IMO thats an improvement on last season. Bring in another CM and I reckon we'll see 4231 with Keatings as a lone striker. I'm optimistic. But then again I normally am and it gets me fucking nowhere following this mob

If we'd been relegation material in the 1st half of the season and the best team in the league in the 2nd half there would be grounds for optimism - Ray taking his time to get established then getting better. However the opposite was the case, Ray was top after 18 games then our form dipped to relegation standard once he had established himself. The only (brief) light at the end of the tunnel was the improvement in form (an unbeaten run) when Wato came in.
Some of the signings may be better, time will tell, but at the moment the squad is lighter than it was last season which wasn't nearly strong enough for the 54 games or so we played and apart from the likely starting eleven, our back up consists of Donaldson, Tosh and youngsters (who Ray has never been keen to play). We will have injuries, suspensions and loss of form to contend with and goodness knows what the situation will be should anyone come in with an offer for Cammy or Fraser. Then we have Ray's tactics, team selections and motivational deficiencies to add to the pot. Reasons to be hopeful ????? Would love to be proved wrong but I said as much last season

Bang-on for me that Annan.
We will continue to struggle to beat the likes of Dumbarton and Raith if we don't make at least another 5 or 6 good signings.
Our first XI seriously lacks quality and strength in depth.
And we are still in the ludicrous situation where we have NOTHING and no-one to call on from the bench.
I am sick of hearing about McKinnon taking his time and having a limited budget etc.
No other team in this Division comes close to us in any capacity. We have 4,000 season ticket holders the next nearest team will probably be Falkirk or St.Mirren with roughly a quarter of that.
We should be adequately placed to not only have the biggest squad in the division but also hit the ground running this year.
I get the suspicion we won't.
Hope I'm wrong.

your season ticket numbers are way out there Falkirk and dunfermilne both have around 3k. We have the biggest budget but not by that much. Patience required by all at the moment is there a any team in scotland that is not still trying to add to their squad?
Offline
Falkirk and Dunfermline also give away free season tickets to under 12's.
Falkirk average 1500 fans less per game and Dunfermline 2000 per game than us.
That's a lot of pennies.
I bet our budget is significantly higher than either, only the other week Peter 'Mah Budget, Mah Budget' Houston was saying his playing budget this season is cut by 200k.
We may have twice as much ST income as our C'ship rivals but we'll have more than twice their expenditure as well.
Of the hysteria about new signings we're not alone. Every club on other forums has their fans screaming for new players, it's just that time of the year.
