Back to the Future

Hi 1st post from me so be gentle

The DUFC Archive has a fabulous post on Facebook showing highlights (20 mins) of the game between United & Rangers on this day (albeit yesterday), 29 years ago which United won 1-0.

This should be compulsory viewing for all at Tannadice as it shows (a) how to win a game against bigger opponents (Butcher, Gough, Woods, McCoist, Roberts, Cohen, etc) and just as important (b) how to entertain even enthrall fans.

There was none of the go-nowhere tippy tappy pedestrian paced, build-from-the-back/forget to advance passing/possession fad that we currently do so badly and lots of end-to-end, blood & thunder route 1 stuff that gets a bad press now but had both sets of fans on the edge of their seats throughout the game.

My view is Jim McLean got it right when he said the only thing that matters is attacking and defending and the sooner we get back to his ways and forget the obsession with midfield & possession the sooner we will be entertained and be cheering on a successful team.

The team 29 years ago could have played as a 4-2-3-1 with McInally, Bowman, Redford, Bannon and Paul Kinnaird (who looked great) supporting Ian Ferguson but the played more like 4-3-3 or 4-2-4 with players getting forward and into the box at will.

Leicester bucked the odds last year when they won the EPL playing a similar type of football that we were playing 30 years ago, maybe its about time that we went back to the future too.

Bring back the (real) "United Way" not the kiddy-on Martin version

Re: Back to the Future

Here, here. I watched 'I Believe in Miracles' about Nottingham Forest under Brian Clough and the style they play is fantastic. Fast passing all done on the run and always forwards. Using wingers as well and getting crosses into the box. Nothing complicated but effective whilst still being attractive.

Too much commotion

Re: Back to the Future

Welcome to the Forum Annanarab, and good first post.

Me and Motherwellarab were talking about something quite similiar on the phone last night.

Football (the World over) has become really quite turgid.

How many teams genuinely go out to attack and entertain these days?

Leicester did indeed do it last season (and look where it got them) but they were the exception rather than the rule.

There must only truly be about half a dozen sides in Europe who go out to win, attack AND entertain in EVERY match.

It's no coincidence that these are the teams all wee boys want to support these days (Barcelona,Real,Bayern,Man City etc).

My favourite ever season following Utd was 96/97.We won fuck all.But we often played 433 with a pacy frontline of Olofsson,Winters and McLaren/McSwegan.It was brilliant to watch and as well as playing great football you genuinely had a belief we tried to and could win any match.

I wish Ray would adopt this cavalier attitude and try and win this league in style.
