Neil Paterson - Ex Dundee Utd Captain

Some of you may know this... but younger members probably won't.

Utd once had an inside left (left winger) named Neil Paterson from Greenock.

Despite only signing on as an amateur Neil made such an impact at Tannadice that he was made Captain of the side soon after his arrival.

And contributed an impressive 10 goals in just 26 appearances (including a hat-trick) over a season and a half.

So what I hear you ask?

Well upon turning down the chance to turn pro Neil focused on his new career.... writing.

Initially a sports journalist for local publishers D.C. Thomson.

He subsequently went on to write short stories and after the Second World War became an Author. Paterson won a variety of awards for his writing, most notably the 'Atlantic Award for Literature' in 1946.(Given to only one writer from either side of the Atlantic).

Paterson's seminal moment in his career (and life) came however in 1959 when he won an academy award for writing the screenplay of the critically acclaimed British film 'Room At The Top'. The film was an adaptation of the novel of the same name by John Braine.

Paterson would go on to write several other screenplays but none would ever match the success of 'Room At The Top', perhaps unsurprisingly.

Though originally a native of Scotland's west coast, Neil ultimately stayed local to his Dundee United surroundings for the rest of his life and finally passed away in 1995 in nearby Perthshire, aged 79.

For anyone who has never saw the film previously.... below is the YouTube link.

Enjoy.
