Re: Jim McLean’s methods at Dundee United explored in BBC documentary

Maurice Malpas described how young players who didn’t come up to scratch were taught a tough lesson by senior members of the squad.
He tells the programme: “I played reserve team football at 15, against men. Now, physically, you couldn’t handle it, but mentally you grew stronger, and you grew stronger quicker. We had experienced players who literally would punch you, if you weren’t doing the right things. There was none of this mollycoddling, you got a whack. You either grew up or shipped out-it’s as simple as that.”
The former captain says the ex-United manager was ahead of the game in many aspects of his organisation and coaching.

Some of our existing squad need some of that. Words don't matter to young players, some don't give a flying fuck especially when yer on good money without the heart for the job or the badge.

Its just a job now and I wouldn't put up with that caper either at my work BUT this is football, my team and a lack of respect for the club as it now stands a so called business  is realistically something in between if yer honest wether yer old fashioned or new to Utd.

Mibbies need a Bowfund or United for Physcho fan funded charity to sneakily sponsor what needs sorted out

If we accept this shitey attitude or even tolerate it as being just a sign of the times we might as well pack it in.

Can't wait until RMcK has filled the squad with his ain type....

Re: Jim McLean’s methods at Dundee United explored in BBC documentary

Bit amateurish research over the whole programme I thought.

Could go on about it, but from a United perspective, goals from 1984 were shown, when the programme was meant to take up from '86.

By that time a scorer shown, Derek Stark, had left to join the police. Might have been interesting to point that out, as enough policemen were shown battering Hibs fans with truncheons.

The police, by that time, had become indebted to the government, Thatcher having increased pay by around 45% (I'll check on this) at the start of that decade.

Acht, I'd better stop, before getting on about Thatcher, Traynor (what was that cunt on the programme for?) and all the folk like Sourness and Murray who 'starred' in the first programme but dodged their taxes.

Good perception Arabnophobia post # 2, I hear all the time that young pro footballers' heads now are filled with mince & bad values. If you get one with a good attitude it's a rarity.
Good review Pat post # 3. It was weak in many areas. At the end of the hour I wondered what point they were making if any.

Regarding police pay, Baron Edmund Davies was appointed to look into pay and conditions by the Labour Government in 1977, and recommended a 45% pay rise in '78, which was implemented in full as soon as the Tories took over in 1979.

If you can be arsed reading about it, it's here:

It's relevant to football, as the power of the police had a huge hand in such as bringing about all seated grounds (that legislation only applied to England and Wales, but the football authorities here insisted on it for top league sides, thus nearly bankrupting several clubs.......and killing Airdrieonians, although David Murray had a big hand in that too).

From the programme, it seems that the police also advised Hearts to ease up on Hibs in one game, which reveals a sinister turn. From 1979, the police got too big for their boots. All, of course, in my opinion.

Re: Jim McLean’s methods at Dundee United explored in BBC documentary

The scenes the Polis were battering Hibees were indeed shocking.

The establishment really did hate the
working class back then...or at least those that didn't have money. The footage of Thatcher schmoozing with Souness at Ibrox personified the decade in a microcosm.

Greed and money is good and those that don't have it will get left behind.

Actually not much has changed (if anything) in that regard.

In a nutshell.
