I should really make the effort as it's relatively close, and it's 'free', but I can't be arsed watching another game on a plastic pitch so soon. I'll finish up in the pub instead.

Getting pumped 4-0 early in the second half.

Fuck sake are the 3D's playing or something? That's poor again.

The whole youth development set up in Scotland is ridiculous, not just United. Most senior clubs have around 100 signed kids between the ages of 10-16 of this number very very few will make it as professionals maybe 1 or 2 a year from a pool of 16. Kids travel all over the country and get a maximum of 90 mins football a week, they are banned from playing for there school and Sunday boys league, its madness Get back to clubs having about a maximum of 20 s signings
The whole "banning" kids from playing football and limiting game time is wrong.......why shouldn't kids be allowed to play as much football as they can physically be happy with whether clubs, kids leagues, mates in the park, the schools, the BB, a kick about in the streets what ever, let them play as much as possible whether coached or not.
Maybe if they were free to play without the barking at them what to do the natural skills we used to love to see would come back rather than the over coached rigid formations and tactics we see in our game which let's face it is no longer as good as other countries!
Were Dalglish, Law, Souness, Baxter and a hunner others coached to be as good as they were.....no, developed natural talent and loads of football. IMO.

Our youth set up kind of left around a year ago.......not long after the fruits of the set up were sold, sold and sold again unfortunately.
Now plenty Directors, media experts and ST .......1 striker and a failing youth set up, legacy issues from last two managers and poor Ray is going to have to sort it all out .....we should support him more over next wee while .....until he can.

Our youth set up is falling apart.
We've been here before under Ian McCall/Chisholm when the youth setup was badly neglected and at the same time Dundee were bringing through a lot of good young players.
Its clear that our youth setup has been allowed to decline but it wasn't terminal then and it shouldn't be now. We need to refocus and start putting mode resources in like we did under Craig Levein. If it means a change in coaches so be it. I suspect the youth setup is being parked in the hope that we get out of the Championship in a year or two.

More resources?? Where is that gonna come from?
Agree we need changes in coaches. Bowman ain't a coach.

Get thsm out and start a fresh. Lets stop more youngsters fucking off to other teams

This all comes from the top lads. They don't give a Fuk, just happy to plod on hoping for the best. Another load of laddies signed for Dundee instead of United last couple of weeks, from Arab families. It's absolutely criminal this is happening and would never have happened on Campbell's watch.

What are their main reasons for choosing Dundee over Utd do you know mate?

It'd be great if we could produce a fine crop of young players who come in to the top team and do well for the club, either via success on the park, or in a financial sense.
But many folk argue that the second string set up in Scotland is not doing the job it was set up for: the development league system is failing throughout the country.
The players who have been most successful for us in terms of sales and perhaps on the park itself in recent years haven't been the product of our youth system, many have come to us from other clubs, and I wonder if this is the way forward anyway. Sure, Goodie, Gauld, the Souttars, Russell came from through our system, but GMS, Armstrong, Ciftci, Robertson were other clubs' youth prospects.
Goodie and Russell didn't play much for our youths but spent more time on loan. Maybe we need to make more use of sensible scouting, sending players to trusted clubs, and trying to pick up talent from the lower leagues.
One thing we can't keep doing is harking back to the days of Stevie Campbell being at Tannadice: that's gone, and it's no use using it as a stick to hit ST and the board at any opportunity.
However, maybe we could see the benefits of sending players on loan, to Brechin City?
A common thread on here is the SC Appreciation Society, statue outside the ground an all that. Without wishing to denigrate him he is not the irreplaceable guru that's he's made out to be. There are/were two sides to the story. As Pat in the previous post says our seeming demise on the development front is not unique to us, the national system overall is not good. The best youngsters are NOT crossing the road in their droves as is being made out & I'm sure Dave Bowman & Brian Grant are doing every bit as good a job as Steve Campbell. Remember too we were very lucky Gauld, Souttar J,Souttar H and Spark were an amazing vein of talent from the Mearns. Four players of that calibre up the road from Brechin don't come along together too often.

Hibs also had a fantastic group of players but they weren't able to keep producing.
We also got a fair number of skelpings under sc. I guess it's partly a youth football problem. Do we know age and experience of those played against the Motherwell lads for example.
Not saying we can't do better when it comes to the youth set up but I don't get all the doom and gloom either....
Maybe I need do more research on how the team is performing.

The Development team (U20's) getting pumped several times this season is a different issue (to an extent) from parents of talented kids aged 10, 11, 12 choosing to send their kids to Dundee to get trained instead of United. The players in the U20's have been at the club for probably anything from 3-8 years and for the most part are what is left over from Stevie Campbell's time in charge. The fact that they are not very good is not the boards fault and possibly not even Bowman's fault. It is a cyclical thing. It is worth noting that what is left in the U20's is the best of the players who were retained at the club when the 51 players, most of whom were youth players (brought in from external sources such as Adeyemo and Lochead were punted) Jackie had assembled were largely released. It is also worth noting that from this shite bunch Robson has played lots of games for the first team and looks like he WILL be our 1st choice left back by next season at least, Matty Smith looked excellent when he actually got a game in the first team, Harry Souttar has got a move to a Premiership club, Justin Johnson's clearly has ability but also 'issues' and Brad Smith and Ally Coote aren't far away either.
The kids not going to Utd at a younger age is worrying however, but is a separate issue. Coaching standards should be set throughout the club by the manager but I suspect Ray has got his hands full with the rebuilding job at first team level and has not been able to give younger levels much thought at all. Not ideal but understandable. Financial backing (or lack thereof) is also a concern but tbh my understanding is that the club have never really backed the kids teams financially that well compared to other clubs (even back in the Levein days this was the case) and the hole in the funding was plugged by Arabtrust and the Fed.
Poor results at any level are never acceptable and I agree Bowman doesn't inspire much confidence but, we are where we are in terms of being in a lower league and skint. These things are cyclical. McCall and Chisholm badly neglected the youth side of things whilst Dundee produced a lot of good young players under Campbell like Wilkie, Dixon, Robertson, Mair, Robb, Souttar, Milne etc. But, that turned around very quickly and can do so again if the will is there.
