Looking very likely that he's gonna be our next manager. If that's the case, what's your take on it?
Good choice?
Bad choice? If so, why?
Lazy choice?
Cheap choice?
Personally, I'm split on it. I can see the merits in it as he's arguably the 'form manager' in Scotland just now and will almost certainly go on to bigger and better things. So, who wouldn't go for the current form manager? Would be stupid not to surely? He'll know that league, and it's player's well.
The negative for me is stupid reasoning but it's how I feel all the same. I really didn't want us to go down the route of another ex player for obvious reasons. As I say, stupid.
Talk this morning of Hibs being interested in him if Stubbs moves on proves that he is a manager in the limelight at the moment, his efforts at Brechin and Raith haven't gone unnoticed that's for sure.
I'm willing to go with it and pray it works out.

I'm willing to go with it too. Would prefer a more experienced manager but the question is who? Stuart McAll? He's about the only stand out just now.(for me anyway). I've already got it in my head that we'll be down for two or three seasons at least!! Unless reconstruction comes about so unless McKinnon proves to be Mixu-esque then let's give him time and patience.

Excellent appointment! Will prove the doubters wrong

Heard he's speaking to United today

Think he'll slowly do well, ideally he'd be getting this a year further down his career path. It's gonna be tough tho, it's a massive re-building job just now.

I'm willing to give the guy a chance. Ken fowk are a wee bit worried about hi being an ex-player. A couple of games in charge this Season, friendlies in the summer. We'll soon find out.
Offline
Tbh I really really hope he doesn't take the team until next season
Offline
I fear Utd are rushing into this a bit.
What's the rush?
Why not let Gordon Young take the team for the next 2 games and in that time assess firstly in that time how he does and what players show the desire to be here next season? And take it from there?
Use the next week or two to sound out people who would be interested and hold informal talks with a few.
Think we are putting all our eggs in one basket with McKinnon. And i'm not convinced he's worth it.
I worry he's just the latest 'flavour of the month' the way Ian McCall was when we poached him from Falkirk or Jackie was when he was at Partick.
I hope he proves me wrong of course and if he comes he gets 100% backing the same way evryone would from me.
But i have reservations guys.Sure he's done a pretty good job with Brechin and Raith but he's not been in management long and our club is such a mess that it needs someone to take the club by the scruff of the neck and sort it out from top to bottom, the way Craig Levein did.
I'm not sure Ray is ready for a job of United's size.
I hope i'm wrong.

maybe McKinnon was next in the queue of people who would touch the gig with a bargepole 6 months ago

Incidentally aprops to nothing else on the thread as regards his management but what was the name of the restaurant Ray McKinnon owned and ran in Dundee? And is it still there?

Was it DD1?

Amba it was called.
Pretty good it was too. Just a pretty bad part of town for that kind of place.

Loads of Arabs boycotted it because we though it was where the Derry bought their trainers.

Beggars cannot be choosers, nobody wanted the job (except Mixu) seven months ago when we were a top level side, now we will be getting aplicunts like Warren Feeney.
I understand Thompson wanting to get the next man in ASAP but IMO he should wait a few weeks to assess the situation.
Offline
Thompson would surely know he was getting rid of Mixu by the time we bombed against Hibs at Hampden, maybe before, so it's likely that the next target was identified some time ago. I'm of the belief that events such as managerial appointments, and transfers (especially last day transfer window transfers) are normally conducted well in advance, so I expect our move for Ray McKinnon will come as no surprise to Raith Rovers.
I'm unsure it would make much difference if we waited for a few weeks, for it might mean Thompson would miss his target. However, the club maybe shouldn't have made a public approach until at least Monday, out of respect for Raith.
Like everybody else, I've no idea how McKinnon will do with United, but I'm sure he is already aware of the areas of the team which most glaringly need attention. Surely he'll be more aware of this than Mixu or Jackie........ Surely.

He knows the league, and will be relatively cheap.
That should be enough to swing it for ST.
PS Pat, wouldn't be surprised if Ray's agent had this sewed up some time ago. Similar to CL having no contact with SFA but Colquhoun probably having deal agreed.

.
From what I've heard, that's pretty much what he's started to do football wise st Raith, albeit the club wasn't as much of s mess ( wasn't great tho, football wise) as us and expectation levels aren't so high.
Like I said above I think he'll do well, it's whether he does well enough quick enough that's the question. It's gonna take a bit of time to clear up our mess, but we need a reasonably quick start to ensure promotion, I would say because of that getting someone quick is important, is Ray the right man to get? I honestly can't think of many outstanding candidates TBH, loads of OK ones of which he's one.
1 point which is stupid tho, and I've said it myself, this but he played for us and that means he'll be shite thing. It doesn't mean anything good or bad in terms of the job he has to do, it's in our heads.

If it's McKinnon then I'll be happy enough. He knows the game in the local area well. We will probably need to try some local lads who've fallen out the game at the top level, the likes of Lewis Toshney and that. Given that we'll not be able to pish money up the wall on shite like we did this season that'll be a positive. If he's given time I think he'll do well. He can't do worse than Mixu.
He also meets my never trust any cunt south of the Tay standard

What's he done at lochee, Brechin and raith? I don't genuinely know.
According to wiki, he has a near 50% win record as a manager. Not bad. But what states were the clubs in prior to his arrival?
Maybe the good thing for him (or anybody) is that ST has cleared the decks and presumably will allow him to keep any extras we have (Paton or Rankin?) But bring in his kinda players
Watched an interview with a guy from Leicester who described his clubs scouting practice and they scout as much the players attitude as much as they scout his talent...maybe something we should look at as I don't think we had a team who were that together.
I'll give him the benefit of the doubt

I reckon this has been in the pipeline for ages. We should have bit the bullet in October and just got him in then.

He was interviewed in October mate.
ST told him he'd interviewed well but thought it was a bit early for him.
