'88 Scottish Cup Final - Build Up

I've never watched the game since (and never will),but I stumbled across this video and found it fascinating.Love seeing old footage like this.

The passion, colour and atmosphere in the days of the terracing was simply magnificent.

7:45 onwards roughly you hear the fans start to sing 'Maggie GTF...Maggie...Maggie GTF'!! And right on cue the pipe band strikes up to spare her blushes.

That tracksuit top fae Utd btw...Ooooft

And next day the Sunday Post reported "the crowd chanted Maggie Maggie...."

Re: '88 Scottish Cup Final - Build Up

The good old days, when football was a real enjoyable day out.

Still don't know how we lost this game or the previous years final.

Re: '88 Scottish Cup Final - Build Up

Stood behind the goal I joined that chant and it wrapped around the stadium from both sets of fans with the loudest 70000 chant I'd ever heard but hard to hear on that footage. Just shows you how loud all these pipers were. You could hear that massive pipe band on approach to the ground from a fair distance.
A very powerful thing to remember as a bairn.

Always remember Highland Cathedral as a fitba related thing. Wedding and all funerals I have had oor piper play that tune.

When we went 1 up in that game something happened to me that will never leave me. First time I truly fkn lost it tribal style. That together with the pain of loosing sum up being an Arab for me forever.
Explode at the good and cherish the moment and the bad bits will only make the best bits better when they come!

Anytime that's happened to me it's been a bad idea to find yer way back in. Only had to pay once to get back in and that was the Mypa game. I will let fate tell me in future to just go to the boozer and stay there I think.
Some funny ways to get back in though.

Re: '88 Scottish Cup Final - Build Up

I was at that game too and still can't believe we lost it. I feel like greetin' all over again watching that wee clip from the pre- match coverage. I remember the anti-thatcher chant being so loud, but you can hardly hear it on the coverage. BBC -plus ca change...

I'm not really one for sports psychologists and all that, but it seems clear to me that the difference between those teams was NOT talent. Why do teams not believe they can beat the Glasgow Evil Twins (GETs)?????

Mr Tek, I have that tracksuit top Like new hanging up in the wardrobe, still wear it from time to time.  It's still one of the more fashionable things I own.  Dad was on the staff back then and was given one, passed it down to me.

Was at that game as a 7 or 8 year old, remember it like it was yesterday. First time id cried at football that.  It was the only time its ever been SCORCHING in Scotland ever.

Re: '88 Scottish Cup Final - Build Up

I organised a trip from Whitfield to the gemme. All young lads, half of them Tims and the other half Arabs. Did a bit of fund-raising and a whole lot of scrounging. The then Transport Convener of Tayside Regional Council laid on the mini-bus, tickets were sponsored, eats were provided by Rosebank Bakery, a cash donation came from the Kellyfield Neighbourhood Association, and sundries such as soft drinks etc from Whitfield Activity Complex. And we all had a fish supper on the way home.

There was a distinct split in feeling after the game, with the Celtic lads cockahoop, and the United boys absolutely despondent.  One young Arab, on leaving the bus, approached me and thanked me for a great day. "But," said he almost in tears, "you organised everything except the score!"

Re: '88 Scottish Cup Final - Build Up

often wondered about united fans and cup finals, it's like the defeats were a massive part of us that we never talked about. i've never watched any of the replay or highlights, not even the goals we scored.

my main memory of that day is an amazing goal by gallacher, like every boy dreams about scoring in the cup final for your tean, and the sheer noise when they equalised, like a tribal roar and in your heart you knew we were going to lose from them on in.

Re: '88 Scottish Cup Final - Build Up

That final was the biggest heartbreak for me

We have lost so many finals despite actually playing well, we will never be described as a lucky team either........some of the bad luck or bad decisions from refs are simply incredible

Re: '88 Scottish Cup Final - Build Up

The lowest point for me was Motherwell in 1991. First five minutes we had goal disallowed for offside that wasn't offside by todays rules or any reasonable interpretation of the rules at the time, then had a shot off the inside off the post spin out for a bye kick on the other side of the goal. After that it seemed like we were destined never to win that game or the cup no matter how well we played.

"I hope she enjoys her day".

Institutionalised Scottish subservience.

Thankfully the other 75,000 were a truer reflection on the nations attitude towards her.

Thatcher is a huge part of that day for me. I always mind in the Daily Record they had a caraciture (sp) of her wearing a half Utd half Celtic strip. Funny the wee things you remember.

This game seems to have for some reason become a huge part of what was to make up the psyche of Dundee Utd fans going forward into the 90's and beyond.

It's almost like we 'expected' heartbreak after this in some capacity (and still do).Or maybe it's just me.

Re: '88 Scottish Cup Final - Build Up

Thatcher and Celtic, are there two things you could hate any more?  Total heartbreak that day; if only Eammon's header had went in after Gallacher had scored.

I think this final was probably the event the cemented that expectation of heartbreak. After all, we'd had the '85 Final which panned out almost exactly the same as '88. Then we had '87...
