3 years on and some of these defeats are now looking like 'a Golden Age' in comparison to this.

St Johnstone final was the worst, that side was the most exciting United team in thirty years and McNamara couldn't get them playing in a cup final.

St Mirren cup final for me. I think if we'd have won that we would have won Uefa cup as well.

Jeez, a nightmare thread. I'd never seen it before, but saw all these defeats.
St Mirren would be the sorest in my mind, like b&t says it had a bearing on the UEFA Final. Events around that time didn't play out well for us, in terms of fixture pile ups and the referee's performance in the Hampden match.
The team, and probably the support, were all drained after the St Mirren game.
Celtic 88 worst for me. Didn't think 85 could be topped but we/they managed it.
LC '08 was a bad one too but winning the SC in 2010 put that to bed for me.

The Hamilton game a few days before this was the lowest point for me (and this is coming from someone who went to Aberdeen in '95 when we lost and were relegated the week after, and was at the St Mirren Cup final). The manner of this defeat meant you knew it was over. I walked out with 20 mins to go and couldn't face going to the derby. Just had enough of us that season.

The only game where I actually shed a tear was the the 6-5 cup defeat at home to the Jambo's in the 60's. Gutted too after the 1st final defeat (3-0) against the tic in the 70's and then it was onwards and upwards for a spell with wee Jim apart from all his cup final losses. Ray's produced more than his fair share (in a short time) of grotty defeats (14) culminating in the Wato-less gubbing from Hamilton in the game that really mattered last season

The 0-1 defeat to Dunfermilne at Tannadice. Second last game of the season if we won we were the league champions, a chance to win something at Tannadice. Never watched any reruns of that but Ally Maxwell and Grant Johnson made a right fuck up of the goal. If I had met any Dunfermilne supporters after the match It would certainly have kicked off still getting angry typing this.

Couldn't agree more with Pat and BT, been to all these but the St Mirren game has to have been the worst imho

my worst was a semi final against Hibs at tynecastle about 93/94, took a massive crowd down to that dump and just didnt turn as per usual.

Midweeker. Did gary bollan break his leg that game?
Wednesday 30 Sept 64.
Lge Cup Semi at Hampden v Rangers.
We were winning 1-0 with 3 mins to go.
3 mins away from our first major final. That was to happen 10 years later.
Doug Moran put us ahead on 21 minutes.
Jim Forrest equalised on 87 mins then got the winner in extra time.
Story in the Courier next morning was Forrest had duped Doug Smith for their equaliser. 'Dummy it Doug' was the call. Anyone remember that?
Eh wiz greetin.

that's the one, remember trudging back to the bus among thousands of us feeling totally gutted and from memory there was hundreds of buses.
think we had a wee chance near the end but for that feck all.
think we also beat Falkirk on route in pens about 10.30 through the week
Can't help but notice that the 2005 league cup defeat to sellik hasnae had a mention.
Horrible game, brutal
Utd might as well have stayed in the dressing room - my worst big game ever

1997 League Cup Final you mean? We lost 3-0 at Ibrox and I got chucked out of Fatties for being pure Gazza'd. 2005 was when we played them in the Scottish Cup Final and lost 1-0. Archibald hit the bar late on.

Fuck yes 1997 - thought 2005 seemed to recent 😳
Not that 2005 cup was much better as sellik were there for the taking

That 97 final performance was a disgrace. Anger rather than anything else was the overriding emotion after that game.

So so many to choose from as mentioned already. This thread is fair depressing me on my holiday. If pushed all the cup final losses at Hampden especially the St Mirren one. I honestly thought I was a jinx. I still haven't seen United win a cup when I was there. Hate Hampden.
