The Book Thread

What's everyone reading at the moment ?

Currently reading 'Post Office' by Charles Bukowski.

Always planned to get into his books and this is the 1st one of his i've read.Fairly enjoying it so far.

Anyone who has worked in a mundane job in a factory or warehouse or the like will really be able to relate to various parts of the book.

Has had me laughing at parts, and tragic in other parts.

Should finish it tonight.

Re: The Book Thread

Just finished 'Oasis and Me' by Tony McCarroll. Good read, some hilarious stories. Tell you what though, what a pair of cunts Noel Gallagher and Guigsy were. Liam actually comes out of it pretty well.
Moving onto 'Adventures in Britpop' by Louise Wener.

Too much commotion

Re: The Book Thread

If any of you get a chance then I highly recommend 'Alive' by Piers Paul Reid. It's the real life account of a Uruguayan Rugby team whose plane crashes in the Andes Mountains.

There is a movie based on the accounts as well of the same name. The crash was in 1972, no rescue teams found them after the crash and had to survive sub zero temperatures, avalanches and lack of food which drove them to eat their own dead friends and family to keep alive.

After over two months, two of the survivors had enough and walked almost 8 days straight through the mountains to get rescue. Out of 45 people who were on the flight only 16 survived to get rescued.

I'm paraphrasing of course but what they went through was just unbelievable. Some of the people that survived the original plane crash died when an avalanche came crashing into their makeshift shelter during the night as they slept. Brutal. And then the decision to actually eat their own dead to keep staying alive.

It's a great read, and the movie is good as well and pretty true to the account but do the book first and then the movie if you get a chance.

Re: The Book Thread

Bedlam, by Chris Brookmyre. Read all his "satirical" works and prefer it to his annual crime dramas.

Re: The Book Thread

"Dark Wood" by Chris Longmuir is a tale of murder and terror in Dundee, the eponymous wood being Templeton Wood, location of two real-life slayings in  the 1970s which are referred to in this gripping novel.

Ms Longmuir has written an outstanding murder and crime series with Dundee as the scenario throughout. Highly recommended to lovers of crime fiction.

Re: The Book Thread

I'm reading "AFTER THE MATCH THE GAME BEGINS" at the moment. I don't often read books or watch films twice unless it's been a while and/or it's special.  This book falls into this category. It's been 7yrs but seems only like yesterday as the memories of this epic comes flooding back. A great read and a worthy addition to any avid reader's collection. Worthy praise indeed from a sceptic who thought twice after spotting the lad on the front cover with a Union flag!
A big YES from me

Hear their shout, hear their roar
They've probably had a barrel of ale and much, much more
Hooray, hooray, hooray, yeah
