Tek Towers Desert Island Discs #11 - The Macho Man

The 11th 'castaway' we are joined by is The Macho Man.

Mr Savage you have been destined to spend the rest of your days on an isolated island somewhere in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean.

In an extremely lucky quirk of fate however there is big package washed up on shore.......when you open the said package you find a cd walkman, headphones and what would appear to be a 50 year supply of AA batteries.

If you could pick any 8 albums to take with you on the Island...what albums would those be Sir? And can you give a small insight into why you've chosen each one please?

Re: Tek Towers Desert Island Discs #11 - The Macho Man

You can take 2 books with you.

1 that you've previously read and 1 that that you always meant to get round too.

Which books and why?

Will do this tomorrow night if that's ok. I've had a one on one training session with Miss Elizabeth, if you know what I mean.  That ok?

Re: Tek Towers Desert Island Discs #11 - The Macho Man

Alright there Macho fans. Here comes my desert island discs.

I hope you dig it, oooooooooh yeah!!!!

Before I start if I was just a mere mortal, I would offer apologies in advance if any offensive music contained in this thread, but I'm the Macho Man and I apologise to no man.....

First up, I'll get this out the way so you can give it the 'predictable' chat if you want (although I'm surprised no-one else has chosen it.

The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses

This was the album that got me all baggy. Every song is a classic, is credible and I can listen to this album again and again. When I was a teenager I actually wore out a cassette copy of this album through over use during long distance car journeys. The olds would be driving, I'd be in the back of the car with my knees pressed high up against the back of the seat in front of me with this on my Walkman.

Whilst this is my favourite SR album although my favourite SR songs aren't on it.

For me, being a very unmusical person I get completely mesmerised with John Squires guitar. The intro to Waterfall just gets me every time. Elizabeth My Dear at something like a minute long was like nothing I'd heard before and I Am The Resurrection for me is a track that just keeps on giving.

I dunno if I have to do something to embed the links, if I've ballsed this up can someone sort it for me? Cheers

(Edit from Sieb22 - I have embedded the links for you mate)

Re: Tek Towers Desert Island Discs #11 - The Macho Man

Album nr 2

De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising

I know this has been mentioned before, but there is absolutely no accounting for tremendous taste.

I hadn't heard anything like this album before. It was fun, it was catchy, it was just brilliantly different. The skits I between the songs were just ridiculously stupid, but they appealed to a 14 year old me. I lost the album in my late teens and forgot all about it for easily a decade. I bought another copy in my early 30's and fell back in love with it immediately.

I've seen them live a couple of times now and what a show these guys put in.

Favourite tracks are The Magic Number, Buddy and Say No Go.

I loved the sampling on DLS's tracks and I love that they sampled Hall and Oats.

Re: Tek Towers Desert Island Discs #11 - The Macho Man

Album nr 3

Exit Planet Dust - Chemical Brothers

In 1990 I went on holiday a total indie kid, with an appreciation for De La Soul. I came back with a love for dance music, what I consider credible dance music.

My brother has this album but he wouldn't let me listen to it, so I bought my own copy so I could listen to it. In my opinion, it starts off strong and levels out a little towards the end, but this was the first album that I felt told me a story despite the limited lyrics in comparison to other styles of music.

I'm still a huge fan of the Chemical Brothers but their older material and their live stuff is their best stuff.

I don't have any favourite songs from this album, but as I said before the initial tracks are slightly stronger.

Here's a wee selection of songs

Re: Tek Towers Desert Island Discs #11 - The Macho Man

Album nr 4

Ill Communication - Beastie Boys

Any album that has Sabotage, Sure Shot, Root Down & Get It Together on it has to be gold.

I'm not going to go over board with my reasons for this as the album speaks for itself. Have a listen and hopefully you'll see what I mean. Also, the Sabotage video is one of my favourites.

I hope you liked those songs.

Re: Tek Towers Desert Island Discs #11 - The Macho Man

Album nr 5

Musique Vol 1 - Daft Punk

Who the hell are these mysterious French Dudes with motorbike helmets and their S&M glam rock style dress sense.

Their chuffin musical geniuses, that's who (if you can excuse their collaboration with pop style Pharrell).

This album helped me through uni. I'd listen to this instead of studying. It was also my album of choice to play when the lads were round at my gaff playing FIFA before hitting the town and Fatties.

Robot Rock, Technologique and Da Funk in the links below for your listening pleasure.

I know this is a best of album but it's still an album. At least I'm not cheating with a various artists albums.

Re: Tek Towers Desert Island Discs #11 - The Macho Man

Album nr 6

In Search Of - N. E. R. D.

Although this album has been tainted by Pharrell and his recent venture into pop it's still a firm favourite of mine but I haven't really listened to it in a while.

I used to drive a works pick-up truck and this was the only CD I kept in the car, the rest were rotated regularly, so needless to say it was on constantly in the car.

I'd heard Lapdance a while before finding out who's song it was and I loved that tune. As soon as I found out it was N. E. R. D. I bought the album and the rest of the album just seemed to fit perfectly. I reckon this album came along at the right time for me as I went through a 'I think I'm black' phase when I was younger. Don't worry I've grown out of it now though.... just.

There are some great tracks in there as well as Lapdance. There's Provider, Rock Star & Truth or Dare.

Re: Tek Towers Desert Island Discs #11 - The Macho Man

Album nr 7

Phantom Power - Super Furry Animals

I thought I hated the Super Furry Animals. I thought the name was shite, I didn't like the album covers and well, they were Welsh.

Then I actually listened to some of their music. The rest, as they say, is history.

For me the stand out tracks on this album are Golden Retriever, Hello Sunshine and best of all Slow Life.

Re: Tek Towers Desert Island Discs #11 - The Macho Man

Album nr 8

The Last Broadcast - The Doves

Previously known as Sub Sub and responsible for Ain't No Love (http://youtu.be/pRguEi3wufQ) managed successfully to reinvent themselves as The Doves.

I'm a fan, a big fan. I've heard some folk call them bland, but I don't see it.

For me, this is their best album by a country mile.

I think There Goes The Fear was meant to be the top track on this album, but for me it's Pounding. Special mentions go to Sulphur Man and Words.

I got into the Doves when a pal called me for a shoulder to cry in. His missus had just left him, he was rock bottom and needed a pal. I picked up a bottle of bourbon, a slab of beer and cancelled a night out, headed round to his gaff. We had this album on in the background on repeat because we couldn't be arsed to get up to change the CD and we got mortally drunk.

Normally I'd then associate this album with bad feelings but my pal and I ended up having great night, he got over his breakup and its a firm favourite with me.

Re: Tek Towers Desert Island Discs #11 - The Macho Man

Two books I'd take with me.

The Martian by Andy Weir is the book that I haven't read yet. I've been told it's a great story but it can get a wee bit technical in places but the story is meant to be brilliant. I'm wanting to read it before the film comes out in October.

With regards to the book I have read, I have a slight problem. I can't remember what it's called but hopefully someone can help me with that.

It's a book about a taxi driver in Dundee who lives along the Perth Road, dabbles a wee bit in drugs, goes to T in the Park, goes to Fatties (or Slim Jims as they call it in the book). It's never gonna win a Pulitzer, but it was a decent read, it's about Dundee with a good sense of humour about it.

The person I'd miss the most.

This is a VERY difficult one as I'm very close to my parents, my bruv and to my own Miss Elizabeth.

Okay, soppy time coming up. I'd miss my missus the most.

Re: Tek Towers Desert Island Discs #11 - The Macho Man

The game I'd take with me to watch would be the United V's Aberdeen CIS Cup semi final played at Tynecastle in February 2008

http://dufc.co/fixtures-and-results/match-reports/5256/

There is just so much to appreciate about this game. The result, the opposition, the atmosphere, the comeback, the memories I have with the pre and post match banter.

Gomis and Kalvenes though.

Re: Tek Towers Desert Island Discs #11 - The Macho Man

The inanimate object that I'd take? Hmmmm. I'm not sure about this.

The easy answer is my Kindle.

Maybe a Rambo knife to help me survive on the island.

I'd probably take a Ray Mears survival book.

Boring.

Re: Tek Towers Desert Island Discs #11 - The Macho Man

The alcoholic drink is the toughest question for me.

I love rum, I love bourbon and I love craft beer (but I ain't no hipster bass).

If I was taking rum, I'd take some Kraken.
If I was taking bourbon I'd take some Woodford Reserve
If I was taking some beers I'd take Rothaus weissbier. It's fucking beautiful.

I'll take the beers.

The one album I'd save would have to be De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising

It just makes me smile like a motherfucker and there are a fair few lyrics I haven't got down yet.
