Tek Towers Desert Island Discs #10 - Rocky Raccoon

The 10th 'castaway' we are joined by is Rocky Raccoon.

Rocky you have been destined to spend the rest of your days on an isolated island somewhere in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean.

In an extremely lucky quirk of fate however there is big package washed up on shore.......when you open the said package you find a cd walkman, headphones and what would appear to be a 50 year supply of AA batteries.

If you could pick any 8 albums to take with you on the Island...what albums would those be Sir? And can you give a small insight into why you've chosen each one please?

You can take 2 books with you.

1 that you've previously read and 1 that that you always meant to get round too.

Which books and why?

Album #1

Revolver - The Beatles

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oyu5sFzWLk8&list=PLAVnLfbvZmkJtQ-PMvWruncEX96RIyHzO

Going by my username you (if a Beatles fans) will recognise my name from The Beatles (the White album) so it will come as no surprise that there is a Beatles album included in the eight discs.

If the truth be told I could have easily taken eight Beatles albums with me but I have tried to take a mix of genres to keep me entertained whilst I am stranded.

Growing up there wasn't too many Beatles albums in my house so I had to make do with the Red & Blue albums like I suppose a lot of people had to but as soon as I was able to afford to buy the studio albums I bought them all one day in Virgin all in one go, it was the best £120 I've ever spent.

Ok then, where will I start with Revolver?

Track 1 Taxman is as a good place to start as anywhere, from the intro counting down to the instantly recognisable beat and bass of Taxman to the matter of fact "Let me tell you how it will be" opening line you are hooked, great tune and a superb album opener.

Throughout the album there are a few drug influenced tracks that are a bit trippy (Tomorrow never knows) ones that were written whilst on acid (I'm only Sleeping) and one that was written whist on a break from marijuana but longing to be back on it (got to get you into my life)

This to me was the Beatles at their best.I could go on and on about this album but I have another seven albums to write about so I'll leave it at that.If you have never heard Revolver do yourself a favour and buy, steal or borrow it.

Stand out track - For no one

Album #2
Songs in the key of Life - Stevie Wonder

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9k3pYwFlr_I&list=PLymM46aOVb8UvrpXZ9FW1nVVVKEk--cdw

I absolutely love Motown and to me this album is top of the tree, from start to finish it is a masterpiece.

I know TEK also chose this but I would be lying to myself and to you if I never had this with me, TEK hit on how remarkable the man himself was and I can only shadow what he said.

I thought about taking 'Innervisions' or 'Hotter than July' but this album is just to good to leave out, with songs like Joy inside my tears, Village ghetto land, I wish, As, Sir Duke how can any fan not take this record with them?

Stand out track - Knocks me off my feet.

Album #3
Quadrophenia - The Who
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JIQJc8WU7U

Around 1992 I was given a shot of the movie Quadrophenia for the first time and thought it was Ok, but I loved the music, I went into the town to see if I could buy the soundtrack but none of the record shops had any copies, I went to Groucho's, Rockpile & Chalmers & Joy (as most teenagers would) but they also didn't have it, luckily enough Groucho's did have a copy of the Album Quadropenia of which the film was based on, I was lucky I didn't settle for one of the two official soundtracts that were released for the film.Quadrophenia is IMO a masterpiece, It could be a soundtrack to most teenagers life, it (along with the film) can shape young men into what they want to be and how they want to be, a greasy rocker or a sharp suited mod, a face or a ticket,

It Is from start to finish the best double sided album I own and possibly the best double sided album ever, that is a bold statement seeing as I have Songs in the key of life right above this choice.

Starting off with 'I am the sea' with the water crashing against the rocks then leading into 'The real me' you feel like you are watching the film without actually viewing it and you can place what part of the movie Jimmy is in just by listening to the album track by track

.I especially love 'The real me' and 'I'm one'

Album #4

Appetite for Destruction - Guns & Roses
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POrfK96m9Ns

Right G&R are so far away from my normal genre of choice but as I do not know when there will be a boat along I may fancy a change plus if the truth be told who does not like this album?

I grew up an indie kid with a love of 60's music but there is something about Guns & Roses that hooks you and you'll love it forever, this album, those songs, they just get you and put you in a great mood, every song is superb and if you don't listen to it again straight away you can bet you'll listen to Use your illusion to keep the flow going.

Re: Tek Towers Desert Island Discs #10 - Rocky Raccoon

Album #5

The La's - The La's
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHM8G7xmUIY

The La's, a band who for the amount of time they spent together (13 years & 23 band members) but only released one studio album.
Everyone has heard 'There she goes' , it has been on countless film soundtracks, covered by all sorts of bands and basically been Lee Mavers meal ticket ever since but how many people have heard their self titled album?

As I said earlier I grew up an Indie kid with a love of 60's music, The La's is smack bang in the centre of that, running a typically 60's length of 35 minutes & 14 short seconds it was able to fit on to one side of a cassette (plus extra) and that was a big thing back in the early 90's.

One remarkable thing about how short the album is that the last track runs at a lengthy 7.51, taking up over 20% of the album.

From the first song 'son of a gun' through to the album closer 'looking glass' every song is a 90's classic and it is a shame that the chief of the band was a needle short of a fix and seemingly was impossible to work with due to crazy demands like only using instruments and mixing desks dating back from the 60's and scattering the amplifiers with dust also dating back to the time of Merseybeat.

There are other La's recordings to be bought, two demo CD's 'The lost La's 1984-86' (breakloose) & 'The Lost La's 1986-87' (Callin' all) and also a Live at the BBC disc which are all worth a listen but nothing will ever come close to the perfect 35.14.

Album #6

The Hour of Bewilderbeast - Badly Drawn boy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4o5tGajfYE&list=PLAB5D6520DCBEF4B8

Damon Gough had been releasing EP's and singles for a few years before he brought out his first album 'The Hour of Bewilderbeast' and it was worth the wait for any fans (like myself) who had been following his career.'Bewilderbeast' has a great laid back feel to it and is a perfect for a sunny lazy Sunday just like today, songs like The Shining, Fall in a river, Once around the block & pissing in the wind are all great tunes and it has been reported recently that he may be ready to release some new material after touring again earlier this summer.

Album #7

Definitely Maybe - Oasis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKjtm3JzXeU

The summer of 1994, what a time to be alive.

The first time in my life I had money in my pocket (that wasn't from my parents)
The first time I was walking into any pub I wanted.
The first time Dundee United had won the Scottish cup.
The fist time I had a band that wasn't a second hand, pass me down, been on the go for years and I had just found out about them band.

Oasis.Near the end of their time (or around 1997) it was deemed uncool to like Oasis but in 1994 everyone liked them, fucking everyone.I remember seeing them on The Word do 'Supersonic' and thinking they sounded good, they was not a lot of good music in the UK at the time, The Charlatans & Suede were doing their best to carry the can and the Inspiral carpets were still on the go but were fettering out and Blur were Blur but unless you were into Nirvana /Pearl Jam /REM /Take That or East fucking 17 that was your lot.

Oasis came in and fucking smashed it, they owned British youngsters ears for the next three whole years and who could argue with them?

Definitely Maybe had it all, even Digsys Dinner was worth a laugh at the time but when you had 'Rock 'n' Roll star' & 'Cigarettes & alcohol' etc......

Various imports of the album had added tracks like Whatever and if you were lucky enough to have bought the vinyl version had 'Sad song' which was a shame because that song was never released on CD only vinyl but it was on some dodgy bootleg copies you could get your hands on at a record fair the Marryat Hall.

There really is not much more to say about this album because everyone has heard it, it is just simply brilliant.

Album #8

Doggystyle - Snoop Doggy Dogg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuhacRRs4mc

I said at the start that I would want a few genres in my choices and I have never been into dance music so I thought I would add a little Hip Hop to get my feet tapping.

I was never hugely into rap / hip hop but I heard 'Doggystyle' around 94/95 and was blown away by the humour in the lyrics and ever since it has been my favourite album by a hip hop artist, 'The Chronic' by Dr Dre is another superb album but to me it lacks the humour that Snoop brings in Doggystyle.

There are many good tunes on this album but the one that is way above the rest is

Standout track - Ain't no fun ( if the hommies can't have none)

I am not a huge reader, I used to get through quite a lot of books but not so much recently so the one I will pick that I have hoped to get round to is Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi, I started it a while ago but was, as usual, sidetracked.

The book i would take with me having already read is Delete this at your pearl,  The Bob Sevant Emails by Neil Forsyth. This is the first and only book I have seriously lost my shit and laughed out loud in public, very funny stuff. Sadly i don't think the humour crossed over as well in radio or TV.
