Suede.

Cast were awful. That Blur song is poor. Wasn't ever much of a Supergrass fan but it's an ok song

Supergrass - Mansize Rooster

For want of a better word it's a 'fun' song.Reminds me of being 15 and being excited about the way the music scene was changing.

Suede for me here.

The Great Escape as a major fuck up by Blur, tried another novelty album but fell flat on their pus and Oasis marched on.

Always preferred Cast live to on record, not a fan of Powers voice.

Tbh I actually think the Britpop era was one of the most overhyped period in British music. For every great band there were countless other bands who were pretty average if not downright shite.

It's the same with every era though I suppose you could argue. I've been voting along the lines of ones that I would listen to now though. So it's the more cynical and bitter me voting rather than the still cynical but slightly optimist 19/20 year old me.

Saying that, Cast were always fucking shite. Scouse bastards

Fair enough.

I still see the 'Britpop' period as (again for want of a better word) a 'fun' period of music where i didn't over-analyse the music too much.It was also 'inspirational' to me in the respect that it made me want to pick-up a guitar, grow my hair, wear cool clothes, and look out for bands from the past that were the inspiration behind the 90's bands.

It was a great time to be young.Maybe i'm over romanticising it a tad but i just cannae allow myself to be cynical about it.All those 'Britpop' bands blow away anything we have in today's charts...even the 'shite' bands like Cast.

A lot of revisionism going on in this comp.  People trying to appear affy hip in saying they never listened to certain bands/songs. I liked most things back then. The only bands I couldn't stand were OCS, Stereophonics (excluding Local Boy in the Photograph which is a good song) and pish like Menswear. Funnily enough, I can actually listen to OCS now in small doses but I remember saying at the time that it was 'old man rock' which probably proves I was right since I'm an old cunt now. Cast had one semi decent song in 'Fine Time' the rest was rotten though. A Primark Oasis.

Re: Tek Towers Best Britpop Song Cup - Round 1/Game 7

95-97 is what was IMO the britpop era, starting off with county house V Roll with it and ending with Tony Blair gaining entry to Downing street, even the shite bands had some good tunes (except Menswear)

It was truly a great time to be in your mid to late teens or early twenties.

Started with Parklife in 94 for me and watching The Charlatans play Crashin' In on the Word. Ended for me when the Verve played Haigh Hall in 1998.

Re: Tek Towers Best Britpop Song Cup - Round 1/Game 7

I've went for 93-97.

Could be argued that it even started in 92 cos Blur, Pulp and Suede all had reasonably well selling singles/albums out those years.

But for me things kicked into gear 93 and went into overdrive in '94.

Just imo.

Quite like Blur, but that song is poor. The Cast song isn't the worst, but I'll go for Suede and Beautiful Ones.

Re: Tek Towers Best Britpop Song Cup - Round 1/Game 7

Definitely Mansize Rooster.

First single they released I think? Still gets played LOUD on occasion.

Cast were largely crap. Anyone remember a song called Desert Drought they released? That was pretty good. Remember tipping it to be a hit. Never made the Top 40.

Thought Blur's Britpop-era output was pretty poor. Charmless Man the low point.

Suede have simply never registered with me in any way, shape or form.

No I agree with you. I was meaning the years when I was into it. I was 15 when I bought Parklife and Life Forever in 1994. Agree the stirrings started in 1992 with Popscene and kicked off proper in 1993 with Suedes 1st album. 1997 was the year it it ended as a music genre that made a real impact on the charts.

Re: Tek Towers Best Britpop Song Cup - Round 1/Game 7

Aye, I'd say I first became aware of something new happening in music when Oasis came on the scene (late 93?). I can still remember getting a lift to school from my mate's dad and 'Girls and Boys' came on Radio 1. First time I'd heard it. For some reason, I always pinpoint that as being the moment the scene truly 'arrived' in the mainstream.

I think of Urban Hymns as being the end of it. I loved that album. It just felt different to what had been going before.
