Tekel Towers Desert Island Discs #4 - Sieb22

The 4th 'castaway' we are joined by is Sieb22.

Sieb22 you have been destined to spend the rest of your days on an isolated island somewhere in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean.

In an extremely lucky quirk of fate however there is big package washed up on shore.......when you open the said package you find a cd walkman, headphones and what would appear to be a 50 year supply of AA batteries.

If you could pick any 8 albums to take with you on the Island...what albums would those be Sir?And can you give a small insight into why you've chosen each one please?

Re: Tekel Towers Desert Island Discs #4 - Sieb22

You can take 2 books with you.

1 that you've previously read and 1 that that you always meant to get round too.

Which books and why?

Thank you for having me on this lovely looking desert island. I must confess I have never listened to Desert Island Discs before, so I hope I play the game right.

I have enjoyed the previous 'castaways' choices, I found a few new songs to put on my playlists. My musical taste is varied and personal to me, and being on this site for almost a year now I know my choices will not be everyone's cup of tea, just try and keep an open mind, and hopefully you might find a song or two to put on your playlists or itunes, and I will absolutely not take it personally if someone doesn't like it. Unless it's Hunted. (Just kidding!)

P.S. In case you didn't know, I fucking love emoticons!!

Here we go...

Album #1

This was the first album I ever bought with my own pocket money. I was around 8 years old, and I bought it on vinyl. I remember playing this all the time, really loud from my bedroom, while I played with my Star Wars figures. 25+ years later not much has changed...

Great first song, I would have my Star Wars figures all set up before I pressed play!

This was the song before I tidied up, the big finale, as this was the last song on the 'A side', the B side didn't get much of a look in till much later.

Love the first 30 seconds of this! Very underrated song.

Album #2
Starting to get into the early teens, this was the start of my rap phase. Great album from a great band, I had this playing on my walkman as I queued up outside of Tannadice for tickets for hours for the Scottish Cup Final in 1994, only to be told they had none left. Then I watched open mouthed as my dad went nose to nose with Jim McLean about the fiasco, my dad went mental, but still called him 'Mr McLean', and Wee Jim to his credit kept his cool and told the ticket office to start selling the 'restricted view' tickets that he was going to send back. That was the day my Dad turned into my hero, and a few weeks later we watched the cup final from the very front row, and the view was glorious!

Probably my favourite PE Song

A fun and catchy song, plus I love Flavor Flav

Probably PE's most important song

Album #3

I love movies, I love music and I love musical scores. When done right it can make you feel whatever emotions that the composer/songwriter wants you to feel. Would Rocky be the same without Bill Conti's 'Gonna Fly Now' as Rocky is running up the steps, or would Jaws even be half as scary without the music, definitely not. There are some great film composers out there, but John Williams is the grandaddy of them all, IMO. How many times have you hummed or done the main Jaws theme, what about StarWars, Jurrasic Park, E.T., Superman, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Home Alone, Close Encounter of the Third Kind etc. etc.

I made a mix tape of some of John Williams music for the journey to Hampden for the 94 Cup Final, I was so nervous I had to recline my dad's car seat right back as I lay down listening to it, it had my heart thumping all the way to the ground. I found the tape in my attic just last week, it reminds me of good times and being young again. Oh and I chose the Jaws soundtrack as it is actually my favourite movie of all time.

Skip right to 1:44, still gives me goosebumps.

Such a beautiful theme to end the movie on.

I know I am cheating a bit with this last video, but it highlights some of his other amazing work.

Album #4

Remember the Brittania Music Club that you used to see on the back of the newspaper magazines when if you joined you got 5 albums for the price of 1, well in late 1996 I got suckered into that, and it changed my life, musically.

The 5 albums I got were:
Nirvana: Nevermind
The Eels : Beautiful Freak
Green Day: Dookie
Foo Fighters: The self titled first album
and Weezer, the blue album.

I never heard much of any of the bands before, apart from Nirvana, it was a lucky dip and it moulded my musical tastes from that point on. Out of the lot, this album is my favourite, and all the songs on it are all great ones.
Shout out to the second album 'Pinkerton' as well, but they declined as a band after the 'red album' IMO.

Another great first song.

Great video and great song. Love the Fonz!

An overlooked song on the album, it's probably my favourite.

Re: Tekel Towers Desert Island Discs #4 - Sieb22

Album #5

I first saw the Smashing Pumpkins when I saw the video for 'Tonight, Tonight', I was blown away by the video, it was a tribute to the 1902 film A Trip to the Moon by Georges Melies, and I was hooked. The song perfectly fitted the video, and the whole album just felt like an experience, rather than just a bunch of songs thrown together for an album. All the way from the album artwork to the inlay cards and CD designs. It's a double album but I connected to every song in one way or another. A masterpiece, IMO of course.

Fun Fact, the main man and woman in the video just met on the set, years later they married, and now the man is the voice of Spongebob Squarepants, and the woman is the voice of Plankton's Computer wife Karen.

Probably my favourite Pumpkins song.

My kids favourite Pumpkins song.

Re: Tekel Towers Desert Island Discs #4 - Sieb22

Album #6
So even though my rap phase was getting taken over by 'rock' and 'guitar' bands, I still had a soft spot for 3 Jewish white kids from New York. I will say right now that this is not my favourite Beastie Boys album, that is a 3 way tie between Ill Communication, Paul's Boutique and Check Your Head. So why is it on my list, well it was the soundtrack to my summer of 1998, one which saw me turn 18, pass my driving test and join the Fire Service.

The freedom you get with a car and just passing your licence was awesome, and I had a great, and wild time. And this was my go to album, that was played in the car. Loud.

Also another reason for it being on the list is that the Beastie Boys was my first ever concert I attended at the SECC, and they were touring for this album. It was great, and when I went back to the Fire Station right after the concert I got turned out to the local industrial estate for my first all nighter, with acetylene cylinders exploding through roofs and everything, my first big fire, and I was still buzzing from the concert. Great memories.

Another great first song..

My kids favourite Beastie Boys song!

The concert was also taped for MTV! Here is the first 9 minutes.

Re: Tekel Towers Desert Island Discs #4 - Sieb22

Album #7
This might be cheating a bit, but I could not choice which Springsteen album to put up, and this was actually the first Bruce Springsteen album I got. When I moved out from my mum's house, I moved in with a couple of girls (not as exciting as it sounds) in a flat in Cupar, and at Christmas time this is what they gave me as a Christmas present. I had always liked Springsteen but never actually heard a full album of his before and when I got this and listened to it I was hooked. Yes it pretty much covers most of the biggest and well known hits, but it only scratches the surface. Now when I put on one of his albums, I always hear something new and fresh, which always makes me smile. Also I was lucky enough to see him in concert with the E Street Band 3 times, once in MSG New York, and all 3 were absolutely mindblowing, a must see for fans and non-fans alike.

This is my Karaoke song.

A much forgetten about gem.

Guilty Pleasure Boss.

Re: Tekel Towers Desert Island Discs #4 - Sieb22

Album #8
Kinda.

Ok, I am totally going to cheat now, this is an album made up of 3 songs that I made up as part of my first dance with Mrs Sieb for our Wedding Reception. A bit of backstory first, my Dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer a few months before the wedding, he was my best man, and the wedding itself was low key, just a wee humanist ceremony (there was no Jedi ceremonies available!) at the Bay Hotel just up the road from us. I wanted to do something memorable as my Dad's health was declining, and this would probably be the last time all my family would be together before he passed, so Mrs Sieb and myself came up with a 'different' first dance, that nobody knew about, apart from the DJ.

It started off with Spandua Ballet's True, and everyone thought we were going to dance to that, then after the intro, MC Hammer's U Can't Touch This get's played instead and we dance to that for a few minutes. My family and especially my Dad loved it. After the wee dance we got a serious one so everyone could dance together, the song was from one of my favourite band's (who's albums didn't make this list!) called Yellowcard featuring Natalie Maines from the Dixie Chicks, which is one of Mrs Sieb's favourite bands, and the song is called 'How I Go'.

Sadly a few weeks after the honeymoon my Dad passed away. So this will always hold a special moment in my heart for me.

The real deal.

The dance. Lighting isn't great, but nobody knew we were going to do it apart from the DJ.

I do love reading, whenever it's a book, magazine or from the t'internet, I love finding out about stuff, you can never stop learning.

Book 1: Previously read

I have always had a fascination with the Tay Bridge disaster ever since I was little. In Springfield I used to live next door to relatives of the driver of the train that went down with the bridge, and from then on I just got my hands on every book about it I could find. This was my favourite one. It is done in a dramatic fashion, using real facts and testimonies from the time and giving it some flair, like a really good documentary would do, which makes it an engrossing read.

Book 2: Not yet read
Mrs Sieb's favourite book, and I like Roald Dahl, this just missed me by. Since I got to name our oldest girl, she named our youngest one, after her favourite book.

Not one person, but my whole family.

My wee girls (who are 5 & almost 3) are the two funniest people I know.

And Mrs Sieb is my best friend. With benefits
