Doontheroadarab PM'd me last night with the great idea of doing a weekly 'Desert Island Discs' thread.

For anyone unaware of the format,it's a very very long running programme on BBC Radio 4 whereby a different celebrity is asked each week to imagine themselves cast away on a desert island, and to choose eight pieces of music to take with them; discussion of their choices permits a review of their life.

They are then asked which book they would take with them; they are automatically given the Complete Works of Shakespeare and either the Bible or another appropriate religious or philosophical work (dinghies).Guests also choose one luxury, which must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside. Roy Plomley enforced the rules strictly,but they are less strictly enforced today. (For example, Plomley would not allow his guests to take another human being with them to the island; however, under the rule of Lawley, John Cleese was allowed to take Michael Palin with him, on the condition that he was dead and stuffed.) Examples of luxuries have included champagne and a piano, the latter of which is one of the most requested luxuries.

I will of course put a Tekel Towers kinda twist on things,so.....

Could someone volunteer please to do the first one...

Sounds like a great idea, well done, perhaps Doontheroadarab will do us the pleasure of being the first since he came up with the idea, if he is cool with that?

Good lad.Been quite a dissapointing uptake tbh.

I think it could be a cracking weekly thread.

DTRA can't do his till 2nd week in July so i am looking for someone to go first.

Had forgotten all about this band. Loved the first album. Spare Snare too, saw them quite a few times back in the early 90s.

Ok our first 'castaway' we are joined by is huntedbyafreak.

Hunted you have been destined to spend the rest of your days on an isolated island somewhere in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean.

In an extremely lucky quirk of fate however there is big package washed up on shore.......when you open the said package you find a cd walkman and what would appear to be a 50 year supply of AA batteries.

If you could pick any 8 albums to take with you on the Island...what albums would those be Sir?And can you give a small insight into why you've chosen each one please?
