Re: Dundee Utd 'Cult Hero' Cup - Round 1 Match 8

Toss up between Kjell and Johnny, going for Johnny tho, loved his attitude and convinced he'll have a great career down south.

I'm going to go for JR here too, could make a case for all four but as far as I'm aware Johnny is the only one to have slide tackled a BNB in a nightclub foam party.

Re: Dundee Utd 'Cult Hero' Cup - Round 1 Match 8

Great memories of Welshy in my second favourite kit but it's between the other 3, for me, and it's actually required calculations to 7 decimal places to determine that the ex Clydebank Stroller is my choice.

At 2 decimal places it was a 3 way dead heat.

Re: Dundee Utd 'Cult Hero' Cup - Round 1 Match 8

TBWTGH before my time, but my Da said he was a helluva player for both Utd and doon south.

Johnny Russell pinging in 40 yarder's V's The Fun for fun = Hero Loved a goal v Oldco/Newco tae.fabulous talent who will achieve a lot in his career and pleasingly still holds DUFC close to his heart judging by his regular tweets.

Tommy fae Trainspotting AKA Welshy was just a fucking colossus for The Shed fae 93-96 era.His goal at Fir park WORLDCLASS,power heider in the last minute at Hampden v the Sheep in the SC 94 Semi = magnificent.his last second heider v Partick in the Play-off at Tannadice = Possibly one of the most important goals scored in the clubs history.Would we have survived the finacial implications of 2 seasons in a row in Division 1 ?Would the clubs psyche have changed irreplicably ?Thankfully we'll never know.

All that said.I STILL have to vote for arguably my Ultimate DUFc hero.i just thought this guy was an utter ledge. His name is Olofssooooon.

Re: Dundee Utd 'Cult Hero' Cup - Round 1 Match 8

Don't know if anyone else has picked up on this but a helluva a lot of these maverick forwards we have had doon the years seem to score between 40-45 goals for the club before departing.

45 seems to be the goalden number,so to speak.

What's Brian Graham on ?

Re: Dundee Utd 'Cult Hero' Cup - Round 1 Match 8

Tough ain....

Big welshy wasna the greatest centre half but he made up with it in effort...didna half score some valuable goals including the MOST important goal ever at tannadice imo

Andy gray I'll have to pass on as slightly before my time, but you could argue he was the greatest centre forward to have began his career at tannadice

Johnny Russell...great touch, great striker, great attitude and i wish him all the best wherever it takes him

But I'm going for big kjell...up there with my favourite ever utd strikers...maybe even 2nd behind luggy

Re: Dundee Utd 'Cult Hero' Cup - Round 1 Match 8

Tough one. Met welshy a few year back when he was at cowdenbeath. My dad told me all the stories, the night he scored at Motherwell sounded unbelievable. The play off goal speaks for itself.

Going for johnny, met him a few times, great lad! Scored that cracker v those bluenose bastards.

Re: Dundee Utd 'Cult Hero' Cup - Round 1 Match 8

Nae memories of Andy Gray, easy to rule him oot on that basis for my vote but plenty of the other 3. Welshy and JR stand out more in my mind for important big match goals so  big Kjell is out in my equation.
Between JR and Welshy I'll go for Welshy based on the importance of his goals even though they were only a 3rd of the 3 ex players.  The only goal of the game very Well and the 88th minute equaliser very the sheep in the Scottish Cup on touted to killing that bastard hoodoo and the 90th minute equaliser that stopped us being relegated get him my vote.

TEK, TEK, you must see this blatant ageism in every round affecting the very essence of the compo!

No option but to boycott any young whippersnappers in future rounds that played post 1970.

There are a fair few posters on here Bugs of a,shall we say 'certain vintage'.

But unfortunately i can't force them to vote.So the players who perhaps deserve to go through, aren't always sadly.

That wisnae socio-environmental comment, TEK, it was the team Utd signed him from (Clydebank Strollers).

Memory like a sieve but some important things stick.

Could there be a generation gap on this board?

Aye we'll be a good mix of ages Bugs so help us out with any important facts you remember about the players we can't remember bud. Had a peek there on Arab archives to see Andy Gray's record and what stood out was a 4th goal at Hampden that killed off the Jambos Cup Final hopes in 74', 2 against the fun at Tannadice in a 3-0 win and 3 and 4 in matches against Dumbarton.  Oh and a winner at Parkhead in 75' with the only goal of the game. Any of these bring back memories?

Big memory of Andy, apart from his previous club, is he was brave as fuck and scored for fun (could be a connection there?). No sure if that was the 4-1 replay cos eh only remember Paddy Gardiner's goal. Struggle to match games with goals but can remember Andy trying a diving header and forming a trench with his nose at the same time.

Re: Dundee Utd 'Cult Hero' Cup - Round 1 Match 8

I actually am tied here,  other than Andy gray I d happily pick any of them but I m going to with Welsh based on the last min equaliser against Partick. I feel if we had stayed down that season we may have had a really tough few years ahead of us and may have stayed down a long time after being weakened financially. Saying that too if we had stayed down we d unlikely of got big shell anyway.
