I don’t disagree with you on the verification issue. It may well be that he has to charge a subscription to eliminate the bots. Whether the majority of people will pay it or not, I don’t know.
As I said, for some time, I disliked Musk intensely. That said, when you are investing, you have to be objective and not allow your prejudices trump your decision making. Any “disrupter” be it, Musk, Jobs, Brin, Theil or Murdoch are usually pretty obnoxious, disagreeable people. Most of us need some form of recognition or praise. These guys don’t. They single-mindedly pursue their vision despite everyone telling them, they are wrong. I recall in 1998, I couldn’t fathom why Google had a market cap of 2x Shell. Google had a annual profit of $100m, whereas, Shell made
$8.7bn a quarter. Tesla is a true technology company. They actually design their chips, rather than outsource them in the way legacy motor manufacturers do. They not only design their own components, but, design (and patent) the machines to make these components.
As regards to Musk usurping someone else’s idea, I would point out that the Tesla founders needed money. In the first VC round of funding they could only raise $7.5 m. Of that $6.5 was Musk’s. Without Musk, the founding members of Tesla, hadn’t a hope in hell of raising even VC money let alone Private Equity. When you turn up at Calpers or Ontario Teachers (pension funds), having taken $100m from a sale of PayPal and have Larry Page and Sergy Brin in tow, they listen to you.
You can make the same argument about Zuckerberg and the Winkelvii twins or even Ray Kroc and the McDonald brothers. Kroc’s genius was to make McDonald’s a property company (not a burger company.
It’s fine to hate Musk, but, one question: Would you short Tesla?
General Discussion » Twitter » 20/9/2023 8:22 am |
Firstly, I have to confess, that, I am a big Musk fan. It wasn’t always that way. For at least three years I did not think he was fit to be CEO of anything. In Tesla he has created a product which is infinitely superior to its competitors. The battery and the charging system are so good, the competition has to use them. I would compare it to Apple
People get accustomed to a certain format and understandably resist change. (I still hate online banking). Changing the logo to “X” possibly was not a great idea, but, I doubt people will go elsewhere.
In terms of “monetising” the product, I’m actually not sure that’s what Musk is trying to do. Unlike Mark Ogren, The Glazers, 777 etc, I actually believe him when he says that it is about eliminating the bots. As I said, previously, I think Musk genuinely wants to create a superior “debating” platform.
Musk really is not motivated by money. People who think he is, really don’t understand the person.

They are doing a great job. I suppose the big difference is that Ann Budge transferred her shares to the foundation i.e. it was a gift, there was no consideration. I just don’t see Mark Ogren doing that. For him it is an investment. Unfortunately he is so far in the hole he can’t contemplate taking the loss.
Lesser Teams » The Hearts model of fan ownership » 10/9/2023 5:07 pm |
Having spent a few weeks away, I have given some consideration as to the best ownship model for a football club. I recall when the Glazers took over MANU, I just thought what a pathetic bunch the MANU supports were, with their stupid banners and half arsed protests. It was a bloody FTSE 250 company. Open a brokerage account with Halifax, Barclays, Interactive Investors, put some money in and buy the bloody shares. The whole process takes less than 15mins.
But of course uk supporters don’t do that. Liverpool, Man City, et al have been purchased. The nadir came with Newcastle being sold by Mike Ashley to an investment group loosely related to the Saudi government in a deal brokered by Amanda Staveley. A regime with no regard for Human Rights, women’s rights or the rights of the child. Blatant sports washing. To make things even more preposterous, the new owners are greeted with a huge banner “built on solid ground” (lyrics of Jimmy Nail song ‘Big River’). I mean if ever there was a polar opposite of the working class values of a proud shipbuilding city this regime was it.
It got me to thinking about what happened to Hearts under Romanov. I for one, never paid much attention to it, but, we know now his private bank was accepting money from some really disreputable sources. What the Foundation of Hearts have done is remarkable. They have set up a structure which is focused on the long term good of the club. No factions, no self interest group, no one trying to make a fast buck. Sure people with disagree with signings, appointments etc, but they share the same principles.

In big games at Hampden involving the Old Firm it is quite common to hold one set of supporters back while the other disperses. What about the 30min rule?
As was said why should rugby supporters be treated differently? Is there any objective evidence to suggest they pose less of a threat?

Ok, Mark Ogren has been had, hook line and sinker, but, so have the fans. A former manager and former majority shareholder have pursued their own interests at the expense of the club and fans.
Apologies if I am repeating myself, but, until we the fans purchase the club, we will be at the mercy of middlemen and opportunists.
Ogren just sold his golf course investment, so he's not skint
Ogren made it clear on 13th May 2022 that the club has to be self sufficient “because it has to” He said that he would not plough further money in.
As far as the golf course is concerned, we know he sold it for £7million, but do we know whether it was purchased by GPH Engineering or Ogren himself? He did not have the funds to develop it himself and co Director Hector Rivero hired contractors to start developing the site, but, according to Ogren did not pay them. Irrespective it is a separate investment.
If you can tell me how much the course was purchased for I would be interested.
I think it’s fair to say that Ogren has been told : when you start digging a hole for yourself, the first thing you do is stop digging.

General Discussion » Why do so many people still say “coloured” ? » 30/8/2023 7:02 pm |
I think it is part generational, part where you grew up, part where you have traveled to and possibly part educational.
For those of you who recall Auf Weidersehn Pet (mid 1980s), Oz, Moxy, et all, referred to the Germans as “The Erics” and the Turks as “The Ayatollah’s”. These working class brickies struggled to understand why “We” won the war and Germany was doing so well and yet there was mass unemployment in England. You also had a class thing going with Barry (electrician) consider himself middle class thus being better informed.
For me it’s not for Blacks/Africans or Chinese to explain to us what is acceptable or not. We should be willing to learn and adapt. Just because black Londoners use terms like “ni**er” or “blud” to talk amongst themselves, doesn’t mean we (Caucasians) should. Could you imagine if a black person called you “ba heid”
Too many people have a closed mindset. They don’t mean to offend but are wilfully blind as to whether they do or not.
General Discussion » Why do so many people still say “coloured” ? » 27/8/2023 2:09 pm |
Over the last few months, I have been dismayed by the number of people still using the term “coloured” when they mean black. It’s not, even, a generational thing, people in their forties are still using the term.
It’s been over 12 years since Alan Hansen made his reference to “coloured” players. I really thought that would have been a watershed moment, but, it seems it wasn’t . I recall having a heated argument with my Dad over this one. He was well in his 70s when the Hansen incident occurred. He genuinely believed that “coloured” was not offensive, but, “black” was. When I explained to him that white was not the default colour and that there were all kind of shades of white he accepted it.
Admittedly the term “people of colour” is not great ( lumping all non Caucasians together), but, at least it is a non offensive term. Most Africans would prefer to be called “black” or “African”.
Are some people just stubborn (using the term their parents used), or ignorant, or unwilling to accept society moved on since the mid 1960s ?

I’ve spent a lot of time, over the years, trying to piece together what actually happened in terms of the sale of United and how Revolution (Asghar) got involved. This is going to be a bit convoluted but focus on the dates.
In an interview with Alan Pattullo (Scotsman) 16th Feb 2019, Asghar was asked about his relationship with Jackie McNammara. His response was:
“Jackie is a friend of mine……He started up his own agency when I gave up my agency and I had a number of players who asked for a recommendation. I gave them the opportunity to speak to Jackie.” “He did some consultancy work for me at Revolution”
Pattullo then asked Asghar when he last spoke to McNammara: “Seven or eight days ago”
If you check McNammara’s name against Companies House register, you come up with two entries: Consilium Ltd and Erena Sports Ltd (dissolved). Strangely another person who is/was a director of both of these companies is Michael Martin. Mike Martin, you may recall resigned as a director of The Dundee United Football Club Ltd on 18th December 2018.
Is it me jumping to conclusions or is it fair to assume that McNammara introduced Mike Martin to Asghar? Or did Mike Martin just find him on Yellow Pages?

Lesser Teams » David Goodwillie Interview with James English » 22/7/2023 6:08 pm |
I don’t think a podcast of this nature, showed Goodwillie up in a positive light, at all. Of course he has matured, but, trying to portray himself as a victim, just, does not wash. It did reveal that he, still, doesn’t understand that nature of rape.
First thing you learn in Criminal law is that drunkenness is no defence to anything. He claimed to be completely drunk, but, managed to drive home at 3am.
“there’s all kinds of rape” Nonsense. Rape occurs when someone does not consent to a sexual act. Furthermore, someone can withdraw consent at any point during that act.
If someone is deemed to be so intoxicated that they cannot give consent, then it is rape. In Goodwillie’s case three unrelated witnesses testified that Ms Clair was so drunk that, in their opinion she required hospital treatment
Obviously if you have sex with someone under 16, it is deemed to be statutory rape.
Goodwillie seems to think violence needs to be involved or the victim needs to put up some sort of struggle.
Music » Favourite Film Composer? » 02/7/2023 7:44 pm |
That is a great question.
I really think it is a bit of a generational question, a bit like talking about the greatest United players. Anyone under 45 just can't recall a top 3 (maybe top 5) United player. By the same token, I think the greatest composers where in the 1950s, where the big film houses were churning out classics virtually every second month and Rogers and Hammerstein were doing the same with musicals
To answer the question, while my own favourite composer is Hans Zimmer (Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Interstellar), I would have to go back to Elmer Bernstein (Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, To Kill a Mockingbird, True Grit, Return of the Magnificent Seven)
I think Barry and Morriconi are great calls.
Despite being long past the heyday of cinema, I do feel we have still a great depth of musical talent: Howard Shore, Philip Glass, Terrance Blanchard, to name a few

The first thing, is, that Musk didn’t want to buy Twitter. A Delaware Court would have forced him to buy it, hence, the issue was forced. The fact that Twitter shares rallied 32% on the announcement, suggests that investors considered Musk could improve the business.
Musk has stated that social media platforms are becoming a Mecca for people to spout polarised views on everything. I think he is correct. Even terrestrial TV stations like BBC and ITV, base their content on what will get ratings. Why would you lead with Philip Scofield for days, when 300 people die in a rail crash in India? A fair number of friends on my Twitter feed think the BBC are anti Scottish.
Musk wants to make Twitter a proper debating form where polarised views are marginalised. Obviously if he succeeds, it will be much more attractive to advertisers.

I have no idea why the CPS didn’t choose to pursue this. I do have a legal background and it is very simple: If someone is incapacitated by alcohol or drugs, they cannot give consent. Three witness confirmed that the complainer was so drunk, she required hospital treatment. At best Goodwillie was reckless as to whether she could consent or more likely he was indifferent to the issue.
Someone should have advised him that he needed to show contrition and ideally reform. Any attempt to give his side of the story will backfire

Is this the Owner of the club you want? Keep asking yourself this question over the course of the coming months.
Let's see how many say 'YES', come the January window.
We’ve still got Watt, Levitt, Behich, Fletcher & Mulgrew on between 3-5k+ a week, the first two on the higher end of that scale. Birighitti, Niskanen, Middleton and a few others won’t be too far behind that. We’ve not paid those sorts of wages since the Ian McCall days where Derek McInnes was making 8 grand a week with us. From 2010-2015, I don’t think Stephen Thompson ever paid anyone over 2k a week, and think of the players we had in that time.
Whether Ogren’s the owner I want or not, no one’s gonna want to be paying those kinds of wages in the Championship, so he’ll definitely be wanting them off the wage bill before committing even more money. Yeah it’s his own stupid fault for agreeing to those types of wages in the first place with no relegation clauses, but he’ll be waiting to see who he can offload first.
That’s why I’m surprised Goodwin’s talking of even keeping Fletcher, as much as he puts in a shift for us and doesn’t hide, he really doesn’t offer us the goals that you’d pay that sort of money for. You could comfortably sign 2/3 good players for the championship for the money he’s on.We've just got rid of 7 players on a wage of anywhere between £100,000 to £200,000 a year. Basic.

That is a huge saving in the budget. Not long off the back of the Owner receiving the Harry Souttar windfall (something he has inherited).
So, again. How many more players need to leave or be sold before we make a signing?

Dundee United » Should Utd appoint a new Sporting Director? » 16/4/2023 6:41 pm |
In a word no.
Essentially a SD sits between the Chairman and the head coach or manager. He has the authority to dismiss the latter. His role extends beyond recruitment to encompass the philosophy of the club. German clubs favour SDs, but, notably these people are invariably ex players who have achieved near legendary status in their playing careers.
The position is not to be confused with that of Director of Football whose remit is much narrower and less powerful.
For a club, United’s size, I don’t think either role is relevant. A decent manager and CEO is more than adequate.

I don't get MO faith in him, he is a guy who after leaving the police decided he wanted to be an agent, and set up a few companies - by far the most successful seems to be the travel company so more of a travel agent than a football agent, have any players came out and said he was an agent for them; I've never heard any? At the same time as he was an agent he was doing his course and then on completion decided to be a sports director. He had to fool a naïve American into giving him a role as no one in their right mind would employ someone with no experience or background in the game as a sporting director. He is well in the category of fake it until you make it and has surrounded himself with former employees and acolytes - so 'yes men'
I may just be incredibly frustrated but while TA is there I have a feeling no manager will succeed for us and there is no chance we will attract a decent candidate. I think what you maybe don’t know, is Asghar’s relationship with Kenny Moyes (David’s younger brother). They have known each other since primary school and played together in a number of teams. Kenny had a sports touring company, which expanded to become Libero Ltd. Even when he was working in Clydebank CID, Asghar held a position in the company.
